“ | I always wanted to stick something in you, Tara! | „ |
~ Ethan mocking Tara, making a suggestive joke while trying to kill her, thus arguing with her and showing his pure hatred of Tara as well. |
Ethan Kirsch, better known as Ethan Landry, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside his sister Quinn Bailey) of Scream VI, the sixth installment of the Scream movie franchise.
He was the son of Wayne Bailey and brother of Richie Kirsch and Quinn, who teamed up with his father and sister to avenge his brother's death by killing Samantha Carpenter, his murderer.
He was portrayed by Jack Champion in his first villainous role. In-costume scenes as Ghostface were portrayed by Jack Champion, Max Laferriere, and Mathieu Coderre.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Ethan was born to Wayne Kirsch and an unknown woman in the early 2000's as the brother of Richie and Quinn. Ethan, just like his family, indulged Richie's love of the Stab movies, even helping him in the making of his own fan-films and YouTube videos about the franchise. When Richie met Amber Freeman, the two conceived a plan to make a new Stab movie using Billy Loomis' biological daughter, Samantha, which ended up with both of them getting killed.
After Gale Weathers published a book detailing what happened, Wayne, Ethan and Quinn were mad at the loss of Richie and came up with a plan to get revenge. Ethan manipulated the housing arrangements, so that he would be assigned as Chad Meeks Martin's roommate so he could gain his trust and worm his way into the group under a new name, Ethan Landry. Meanwhile, Wayne and Quinn would come to New York with him, under the name Bailey.
Scream VI[]
The night after Wayne killed Greg Bruckner and Jason Carvey, Ethan attended a frat party with Chad. On Quinn's notice, Sam went there and attacked a student named Frankie, who was trying to take advantage of Tara. When the group got outside of the clubhouse, a rude girl threw a drink at Sam which almost provoked the latter into a fight , this resulted in a video of Sam almost attacking her ended up on the news making Sam look even more guilty. Ethan then gave Sam tissues to clean herself with. The group returned to their apartment, and saw a news report on Greg and Jason's murders.
The next morning, Ethan listens to Mindy's rules and suspects list with the rest of the group and realizes he is Mindy's top suspect. He expresses fear if he will "die a virgin".
That night, Ethan sneaks into the apartment and is seen by Danny, Sam's neighbor with whom she's begun a secret relationship, who attempts to get Sam's attention. Ethan then kills Paul 2.O, Quinn's lover. Then he proceeds to pretend to attack Quinn and thus fake her death. When the group hears the commotion, they receive a picture from Danny of Ethan pretending to attack Quinn. Ethan then tosses Quinn through a door at Anika, and then slices Mindy's arm, and finally stabs Anika, before slitting open her stomach. Chad and Tara attempt to leave the apartment, whilst Mindy, Sam, and a heavily bleeding Anika run into the bathroom, where Mindy discovers Paul 2.O's dead body.
Mindy and Anika barricade the door with a dresser while Sam climbs a ladder to Danny's apartment. As Ethan rapidly tries to break in, Anika forces Mindy to go first. By the time Mindy is in Danny's apartment, Ethan has almost gotten inside. As Anika is climbing, Ethan forces his way through. Ethan then taunts Anika by tipping over the ladder as she is climbing. Ethan finally tips the ladder over, sending Anika to her death. Satisfied with his work, Ethan leaves the apartment.
Ethan shows up to the crime scene the next day, and is confronted by Chad, who angrily asks where he has been, believing that Ethan killed Anika, but Ethan is adamant he had econ and that their were several people there who Chad could ask about Ethan’s whereabouts. Later, Ethan goes with the gang to an old theater, allegedly owned by Jason Carvey, which houses a shrine to Ghostface. However, Ethan knows the shrine belonged to his brother. Along with Ethan, Wayne stages a plan to trap the killer, unbeknownst to the rest of the group that it is a setup. Ethan hides in a van with Chad, Mindy and Kirby as she traces a call from Quinn who is hiding in Gale's penthouse to lure them there.
After Quinn attacks, but fails to kill Gale, Tara comes up with a plan to lure Ghostface into a trap and execute him. Wayne tells them to travel in public, so the group take the subway, where Mindy and Ethan are separated from the rest. After boarding their own subway, which Quinn also boards as Ghostface, Quinn attacks Mindy, but doesn't kill her. Ethan is able to keep his cover by yelling for help and seeking medical attention for Mindy. None of this helps him keep his cover as Mindy still knows he is a Ghostface, despite claiming she was wrong about him.
Ethan and Quinn wear Ghostface masks (Ethan wearing Nancy Loomis', Quinn wearing Stu Macher's) and attack Kirby, knocking her out, so Wayne can easily frame Kirby as the killer. Ethan saves Quinn as Chad is about to attack her with a gumball machine. They manage to stab Chad multiple times, but again, do not kill him.
They return to the theatre and upon Wayne's arrival, unmask themselves and after a few minutes, reveal they were Richie's family. Ethan reveals his last name isn't Landry as well, and that Mindy was correct in guessing he was not only a killer, but that it was suspicious he became Chad's roommate (she said this earlier in the film). They reveal their plan to kill Sam in revenge for Richie's death and have full less suspicious blame on her for his killing spree, as well as they plan to kill Tara and their friends too and anyone who had anything to do with Richie’s death.
Before the final battle is able to take place, Ethan reveals serious contempt for Sam in particular for murdering his brother Richie, and then he and Quinn both attack her and Tara, with Ethan being stabbed numerous times, and Quinn having her teeth knocked out with a brick by Tara. Ethan is later stabbed in the mouth by Tara, but not before he's able to get a stab into her torso.
With Quinn and Wayne both dead, Ethan tries his hand at "one last scare" foolishly attempting to kill Sam and Tara in a desperate fit of rage, only for Kirby to use the TV that previously electrocuted Stu to death. Ethan got his head crushed and bleeds out to death, finally putting an end to whole Kirsch family and their killing spree.
Personality[]
Ethan is shown to be "the shy, dorky guy who no one would suspect because he’s so shy and dorky" (said by Mindy). He seems to get along well with his roommate Chad, and also appears awkward around girls. He seeming proved his innocence by saving Mindy. In reality Ethan is a sadistic and deranged cold blooded killer who takes glee in seeing his victims die. Additionally, he is also insecure about being a virgin and resents Chad, seemingly for his success with women in comparison to Ethan. He has love for all of his family, seeking his dad’s approval, trying to avenge his brother and saving his sister from Chad. He also has a grudge against Tara, probably because of her rude behaviour towards him before revealing himself, wanting to kill her the most just as much as Chad and Sam.

Quotes[]
“ | I, I, I... I have some tissues if you want tissues... I have, like... three tissues... | „ |
~ Ethan timidly gives Samantha tissues after Sam was splashed by one of the students. |
“ | Why did everyone just freak out when her phone rang? | „ |
~ Ethan Landry. |
“ | Mindy: Okay, nerds, listen up! As terrifying as this all is, I’m actually glad I get chance to redeem myself for not calling the killers last time. The way I see it, someone is out to make a sequel to the requel. Anika: Um, what’s a requel? Mindy: You’re beatiful, sweetie, let’s hold questions to the end. Sam: "Stab 1" took place in Woodsboro. "Stab 2" took place in college. Tara: So we think that the killer is trying to copy the movies? Mindy: That is one possibility. Heroes now in college – check. Suspicious new characters brought into round out the suspect list, and/or body count – check, check, check. Ethan: I don’t like this… Mindy: But it can’t be just about "Stab 2". Tara: Why not? Mindy: That would make sense if this were just a sequel. But we’re not in a sequel, because nobody just makes sequels anymore. We’re in a franchise! And there are certain rules to a continuing franchise. Sam: I had a feeling… Mindy: Rule one: Everything is bigger than last time – bigger budget, bigger cast, bigger body count, longer chases, shoot-outs, beheadings. You got to top what came before to keep people coming back. Chad: Beheadings? Mindy: Beheadings. Rule two: Whatever happened last time, expect the opposite. Franchises only survive by subverting expectations. If the killers last time were whiny snowflake film nerds with Letterboxd accounts instead of personalities, you can bet the opposite will be true here. And rule three: No one is safe. Legacy characters? Cannon fodder at this point, usually brought back only to be killed off in some cheap bid for nostalgia, it’s not looking to good for Gale and Kirby. Oh, and that’s not even the worst part! Chad: This is the part where she tells us the worst part. Mindy: The worst part is that the franchises are just continuing episodic installments designed to boost an IP, which means main characters are completely expandable now, too – Laurie Strode (Halloween), Nancy Thompson (Nightmare on Elm Street), Ellen Ripley (Alien), Sally Hardesty (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Jigsaw (Saw), Tony Stark (Marvel), James Bond, I mean, even Luke Skywalker (Star Wars) – they all died, so their franchises could live on, that means it’s not just the friend group, any of us could go at any time, especially Sam and Tara. Ethan: Wait, wait, any of us?… This… am… Am I in the friend group?… Am I like one of the targets?… Am I gonna die a virgin? Mindy: That was a weird overshare, but it brings us to our current suspects: Ethan, the shy, dorky guy, who no one suspects, because he’s so shy and dorky. Ethan: Ok, wait, why am I on the suspect list, because I’m… randomly Chad’s roommate? Mindy: Roommate lotteries can be juked, you could have fixed it to get next to us. Ethan: [scoffs] Mindy: Quinn, the slutty roommate, a horror movie classic. Quinn: Sex-positive, but, thank you? Mindy: Yeah. How did you come to live with Sam and Tara? Quinn: I answered their ad online. Mindy: Okay, say no more, you’ve already implicated yourself enough. Tara: It was an anonymous ad, Mindy, and you know we vetted her, plus her dad is a cop. Mindy: And that makes it more likely that she’s the killer, because having a cop dad is a great cover. Do you not remember how these movies work, Tara?! Quinn: Is he always like this? Mindy: And finally, Anika. Never trust the love interest. Sam: Okay, so we have our rules and we have our suspects. Ethan: Wait, wait, wait… What about you guys? Mindy: I mean, I think it’s pretty safe to rule out the four of us who went through this last year in Woodsboro. Chad: Agreed. Quinn: Not agreed, what if the trauma you all went through caused one or more of you to snap? Ethan: Yeah, or the fame you got from the killings made you thirsty for more, I mean, let’s be honest here, some of the theories online about Sam are… Tara: Don’t you f-cking dare! Anika: Okay, Quinn’s right, though. I mean, face facts – if we’re all suspects, you’re all suspects. |

~ Ethan listens to Mindy's rules, and is pretented to be worries about New York Killing Spree. |
“ | Chad: [attacks Ethan] Where were you?! Ethan: What? When? Chad: Last night! Ethan: Well at... at Econ, you know this! Chad: Bullshit, man! You disappear and my sister almost gets killed! Ethan: Dude, I was in the study hall with the a hundred other people, you can ask any of them. Chad: F-ck, man. Ethan: [looks at the apartment] Oh my God... Who? Chad: Anika, Quinn. Ethan: Mindy, I'm so sorry. Mindy: Step the f-ck back. You're at the top of my list. Ethan: I had Econ! |
„ |
~ Ethan lies that he didn't attack his friends in the apartment and didn't kill Anika, as he was in the Econ class the whole time. |
“ | Ethan: Um...Why am I here exactly? My alibi checks out. Chad: So I can keep an eye on you, roommate. |
„ |
~ Ethan still tries to convice Chad the he didn't attacked them in the apartment. |
“ | Is this even a good plan? So we just peel off and the killer picks us on one by one? No, thank you. | „ |
~ Ethan about the idea of taking the subway. |
“ | Ethan: This is your grandmother's, Sam. Nancy Loomis. Really runs in your f-cking family, doesn't it? Speaking of family... Wayne: Wait for it. Ethan: My name is not Ethan Landry! Isn't it, dad? |
„ |
~ Ethan reveals that Wayne is his father while taunting Sam with her grandmother's Ghostface mask. |
“ | Wayne: You are a killer. Just like your father! Sam: No, I'm not! Quinn: Yes, you are, you motherf-cker! YOU KILLED OUR BROTHER! Sam: What are you talking about? Tara: You said your brother died in a car accident. Ethan: No, no, no, no, you sweet-dumb thing... He died in Woodsboro, at the hands of your bitch sister. Sam: [Sam looks at all the Kirsch family members and becomes stunned, realizing who they're talking about] You're Richie's family... |
„ |
~ Ethan, along with Quinn and Wayne are revealed to be Richie's family. |
“ | Ding-ding-ding-ding! She's finally starting to get it! | „ |
~ Ethan after Sam realized that he is Richie's brother. |
“ | Ethan: Recognize this!? Kirby: F-ck you! [Ethan stabs Kirby in the same place, where she was stabbed by Charlie] Sam: [hits Ethan with a brick] [to kirby] Sorry, I'm gonna need this. [plunges a knife out of Kirby's stomach] Ethan: What are you going to do about it, bitch? [Sam starts stabbing Ethan in the chest] |
„ |
~ Ethan's confrontation with Kirby and Sam. |
“ | Ethan: I always wanted to stick something in you, Tara! Tara: F-ck you! Ethan: F-CK YOU! |
„ |
~ Ethan threatening and arguing with Tara, as she angrily insults him, he starts ragefully throwing the same insult back at her. |
“ | You guys are so f-cked now! | „ |
~ Ethan after Quinn climbed on a rooftop, preparing to stab Sam, who was holding Tara from falling. |
“ | Ethan: [after Sam let Tara go, Ethan stabs her in the stomach] Gotcha! Tara: [stabs Ethan through the mouth, as Quinn looks in horror] [After a few seconds, Tara brutally twists the knife in Ethan's mouth] Now die a f-cking virgin. |
„ |
~ Ethan's last moments, after being stabbed through the mouth by Tara, as she taunts him, and has him presumably dead and later finally killed after Kirby threw a TV that killed Stu Macher on his head. |
Trivia[]
- It's heavily implied a secondary motive for Ethan was to gain his father's love/approval; he's shown to be noticeably upset when Wayne says, "there's a special bond shared between a father and his first son." Wayne also seems to go out of his way to compliment both of his kids for their performance as Ghostface, making sure Ethan is accepted too.
- He is the sixth Ghostface killer who was not killed by a gun, preceded by Stu Macher, Charlie Walker, Kieran Wilcox, Jamal Elliot and Wayne Bailey.
- He is the first Ghostface killer who never had a phone call with a victim.
- In deleted dialogue from Scream VI, it is revealed that Wayne forced Ethan to murder Mrs. Kirsch after she refused to assist with their plans to get revenge against Sam.
- Ethan has a few parallels with Stu Macher. Both tell one of the heroines they were interested in them (Stu "always having a thing" for Sid, Ethan "wanting to stick something inside" Tara), both will do anything for their leader (Billy for Stu and Wayne for Ethan) and are killed by the exact same TV falling on them.
- Ethan also shares similarities with fellow Ghostface, Jill Roberts. They both felt worse treated by their parents than other family members (Jill felt that her mother loved Sidney more, and Ethan felt that his father loved Richie more). However, while Jill's assumptions were based solely on jealousy of Sidney's popularity and were unfounded, Ethan's assumptions were indeed true, as it is heavily implied that Richie was Wayne's favorite son and Ethan felt rejected, and therefore became Ghostface killer to gain his father's approval.
- Ethan is implied to be a parody of the incel culture. He is a socially-awkward, shy man who is insecure about being a virgin, calls Chad an "alpha male" after revealing himself as a killer, outright mocks Chad for his name, and throws several sexual remarks towards Tara. In that sense, he shares a similarity to Charlie Walker before him, as both were incel geeks who turned to brutality and aimed to please their superior accomplice.
- His last name is likely a reference to Craig and Elise Landry from The Tortured.
