Ataleoftwosisters 2alt

Eun-joo being acted out by the delusional Su-mi.

Eun-joo is is main antagonist in the film A Tale of Two Sisters is stepmother to Su-mi and Su-yeon and is the second wife of the girls' father. She is also the main reason why Su-mi gradually shifted her role from a loving protagonist to a deeply troubled antagonist.

Plot

Initially, Eun-joo was a nurse who took care of their dying biological mother but throughout her time being the nurse of this family, Eun-joo developed feelings for the father and this eventually led them to be secretly married. Her stepdaughters discovered the truth and since then tensions have developed between them and her.

One day, Su-yeon cries in her bedroom alone after a heated confrontation in the dining room but this ultimately led to Su-yeon's death as she finds out that her biological mother hung herself in the closet and she attempts to revive her, which causes the closet to fall ontop her and crushing her to death afterwards.

Eun-joo was the first one to investigate what happened upstairs but after seeing her other stepdaughter, Su-mi, she immediately dismisses on saving the dying Su-yeon as they both have an intense argument. Before Su-mi left the room, Eun-joo grabs her arm and tells her that "someday she will regret this". This eventually led Su-mi to being admitted in a mental hospital as she indeed regretted over her sister's death and from this, she developed psychosis and multiple personality disorder.

Throughout most of the movie, while Su-mi imagined her sister being in the house and acted on being the role of the stepmother, Eun-joo was away, possibly on a business trip. Eun-joo finally returns home after discovering that Su-mi was harming herself whilst acting out the role on being her. She and her husband later take Su-mi back to the mental hospital.

After arriving home, Eun-joo sits alone in the dining room as she suddenly hears footsteps going upstairs on the staircase. She noticed that the source of the noise came from the bedroom (similar to what happened to her when she discovered that Su-yeon accidentally killed herself). As she walks into the bedroom, blood is seen forming on the floor, hinting that it is being haunted by Su-yeon or the biological stepmother.

Shivering, Eun-joo notices the drapes covering the bedroom closet and she quickly opens it. At the same time, the lights turn off by itself and the door shuts close by itself as well. Eun-joo opens the closet door and notices a lace coming out between two mattresses. Eun-joo pulls out the lace out of curiosity but suddenly, a ghostly figure (possibly the ghost of the biological mother or Su-yeon) emerges out of the matresses and it crawls out of the closet and water leaks as it comes closer towards her.

Eun-joo can only watch as the ghost comes even closer towards her. After that, her screams can be heard outside from the house and the camera zooms out of the exterior of the house, leaving a mystery on what really happened to Eun-joo at the end.
