~ Eva professing her love for Steve in episode 71. |
Eva Sanchez is a major antagonist of the Filipino live-action series Voltes V: Legacy. She was portrayed by Elle Villanueva.
Unlike most Voltes V: Legacy characters, Eva is not based on any character from the original anime. She was designed from scratch and debuted in Legacy.
Personality[]
Eva is vain and obsessive. She doesn't take the feelings of others into account and is prone to getting jealous easily. She often covets things she can't have, and would rather take shortcuts than work hard to achieve them. She also exaggerates things to make herself look like a victim and is petty to extreme degrees.
Following her assassination attempt on Jamie Robinson, she was also armed and dangerous due to her military training before her demotion and also displays her anger and rage after Steve rejected her romantic advances. She was berated by Dr. Hook for being selfish and greedy, before being dismissed her from service in Camp Big Falcon, and then being taken to the military camp to be judged by the court martial for her crimes.
History[]
Eva was one of the candidates in the Voltes Team training program, making it to the final round, but was disqualified for breaking Camp Big Falcon's rules. She was reassigned to staff member of Mission Control alongside Ally, Tomas and Santiago by General Oscar Robinson.
Eva used to be the girlfriend of Steve Armstrong, but she broke up with him. Despite this, Eva still pines for Steve, and when she witnesses his obvious crush on Jamie Robinson, she vowed to do whatever it took to get her out of the picture, even if it meant murdering her so she can take her place in the Voltes team.
Biography[]
Eva and her best friend Ally spent years of their lives training at Camp Big Falcon to make it to the Voltes team. A day before the Boazanian invasion, Eva Sanchez, Ally Chan, Tomas del Rosario, and PJ Santiago planned to sneak off and have a party. They invited Steve Armstrong and Mark Gordon to join them, but they refused.
Unbeknownst to the four teenagers, the Boazanians invaded the Earth the next day. Because they snuck off, they did not show up to their duty. As a result, they were disqualified by General Robinson as potential Voltes V pilots. Meanwhile, Steve Armstrong, Bert Armstrng, Jon Armstrong, Mark Gordon and Jamie Robinson became pilots for Voltes V. Reduced to a mere mission control staff member, Eva became jealous of the Voltes team and the many accolades they received for defeating the Boazanians.
Eva is in love with Steve, but he doesn't like her back. She knows he is in love with Jamie and tries to intimidate her into staying away from him. In episode 17, Eva confronts Steve and he admits that he loves Jamie but won't act on his feelings. She still tried to goad him into being her boyfriend, such as pretending the flowers Steve brought were for her (when they were in fact for his deceased mother) in front of Jamie. Instead, Steve got angry and berated her seflishness.
Eva would still continue to flirt with him later on, as Steve was too polite to tell her to leave him alone. She would frequently try to make Jamie jealous by making advances on him.
Eva stumbled on Jamie's assigned bodyguard, Apable, spying and leaking data to another company. He begged her for mercy and offered to split the pay between them. Eva decides to blackmail Apable and told him that if he does not help her assassinate Jamie Robinson, she will expose him for spying for a rival camp. While Apable doesn't want to harm Jamie, he tells Eva that if he gets caught, he is taking her down with him.
Apable tries to kill Jamie thrice and nearly becomes successful when he spikes her drink, rendering her unconscious. Luckily, Steve and Mark arrive in the nick of time and successfully subjugate him. Afterwards, Commander Robinson, Jamie's father, declares that he will find justice for Jamie and punish whoever tried to kill her. Before Apable can be questioned and interrogated, the company he works for send a sniper to kill him.
When Bert resigns from the team, Eva becomes excited and asks Dr. Smith if she can take his place. However, he eventually comes back, much to her annoyance. Eva becomes even more frustrated that Jamie gets to be around Steve as a co-pilot, but she doesn't.
While chatting up Steve one day, Eva noticed Jamie walk by and loudly asked her if she had a boyfriend. Jamie, who was insecure by Eva's remarks, replied by saying that she did - Mark. Eva, happy that she would no longer have to worry about Jamie "stealing" Steve from her, congratulates them. This shocked Steve, and even though he told the couple he's happy, on the inside he felt heartbroken. In actuality, Jamie didn't love Mark and felt terrible for lying to him in a moment of weakness.
Steve, unable to hide his feelings any longer, finally confessed to Jamie when he assumed she was asleep. However, unbeknownst to him, Jamie was awake. Shocked, she demanded that he explain himself and Steve told her the truth - he was in love with her, but unwilling to act on it, because he thought "Mark deserved her more" and "he was scared to love her". He told her again that he loved her, but Jamie said that she couldn't be with someone unwilling to be honest with her before, and she is with Mark now. Steve, though hurt, accepted this. Secretly Jamie still had feelings with Steve, but was upset because he lied to her.
Once Mark finds out Jamie still has feelings for Steve, he breaks up with her. Not wanting his heart to be broken again, he tells her they are now teammates working professionally. Jamie feels ashamed for her actions.
Later, as Mark is walking down the halls of Big Falcon, Eva approches him and insists they should do a double date with her and Steve, joined by him and Jamie. Mark replies that he has broken up with her, and when Eva asks why, he tells her to ask Steve. Eva then witnesses Jamie call Steve a coward for not being upfront about his feelings.
With Commander Robinson's death at the hands of Oslak, Eva attempts to assassinate Jamie by shooting her twice in the stomach while disguised as a kendo practitioner. She kicks Jamie's limp body after doing the deed and exits the gymnasium. Jamie's body is discovered by Anna and she is treated in the med bay.
Later, Steve apprehends Eva, suspecting that Eva attempted to kill Jamie. His usually-calm demeanor turns serious as he threatens her with consequences if she was the culprit behind Jamie's attempted murder. He brings up the fact that Eva hates Jamie, but Eva lies and says they are on good terms. Eva refuses to admit the truth, and re-affirms that she thinks that she belongs in the Voltes team. She insists that she should take Jamie's place, and then angrily yells at him for breaking her heart, amongst other things.
Due to Jamie needing to rest, Eva tries to take her place alongside Steve, Mark and Bert during a training drill. During this time, Jon is attending a science conference due to being a child prodigy at technology. Steve and Mark express discontent at having to work with Eva. Eva hints replacing Jamie, but Mark shuts it down. The four are participating in a training exercise, and Eva is assigned to be the team sniper while Mark, Steve and Bert retrieve the hostage. They all demonstrate their skills and successfully retrieve her. At the end of the exercise, Mark says that he hates to admit it, but Eva is a really good sniper.
Marquise Zaki dispatches Takeo and Arisa to kidnap Little Jon Armstrong, the youngest member of the Voltes team. Takeo and Arisa disguise themselves as humans and try to take Jon hostage, but other Camp Big Falcon personnel come to his aid. While Jon tries to use his invisibility device to hide himself, he is still discovered and then kidnapped. Dr. Hook then regretfully informs the Voltes team that Jon has been taken hostage. He orders Eva to join the team in the search for him. However, Jamie arrives, healed from her injuries. She says "Dream on, Eva", before saluting Dr. Hook. Eva feigns concern and says that Jamie should rest, but she insists she can fight. Dr. Hook tells Steve that since he's the leader, he can choose whether it should be Eva and Jamie that will accompany him, Bert and Mark in looking for Jon. Steve picks Jamie, stating that she is their teammate, while Eva looks heartbrokenly at her gear. Steve, Mark, Bert and Jamie proceed to look for Jon. They fall into a trap set up by Marquise Zaki at first, but after a spar with Takeo and Arisa, they manage to bring him back to Camp Big Falcon.
In Episode 81, Eva secretly hides her evidence by digging on the ground outside of Camp Big Falcon when the investigation for Jamie's assassination attempt was on going but her evidence are found by Dr. Hook after she leaves who had been following her to confirm that she was the real culprit, and remembers her actions of wanted to join the Voltes Team in Jamie's place. Seeing what Eva had done to Jamie and got her evidence, he orders all of the soldiers in Camp Big Falcon to arrest her for questioning which they confront her within Episode 82. However, Eva is able to take everyone down with her military combat techniques and firearms after being exposed as the real culprit behind Jamie's assassination and later had a gun fight with Dr. Hook. She was later pinned by Dr. Hook after she was outsmarted by him by gunning him down his holographic self with a machine gun being assisted by Captain Kelly and was apprehended by the military guards in Camp Big Falcon afterwards. She was currently imprisoned within the base and was visited by Jamie who now knows she was responsible for the assassination on her. In Episode 84, she continues to proclaim that she was a great member of Earth Defense Force and Camp Big Falcon and they are not aware of her job efforts but they instead wasted on her by choosing their favorites. Dr. Hook angrily berates her for wasting herself while explaining that the Voltes team and selfless soldiers are good people with a good heart while risking their lives to save their planet. As for Eva since she was not like the others, he continued barraging her for both her selfish and greedy side and she needs to be taught a lesson for her actions and having opportunities to change her ways. Dr. Hook eventually dismisses Eva from the service at Camp Big Falcon and was emotionally taken custody by the military guards to be moved at the military camp to face her judgment by the court martial for her crimes.

- Military Training: Prior to her demotion as a RAD specialist, Eva is trained in military combat techniques including various firearms and piloting battle jets. Trivia[]
- Many fans disliked the Steve/Jamie/Eva love triangle because in the original anime, Kenichi and Megumi (who Steve and Jamie are based on, respectively) never showed any attraction to each other, thus making the sub-plot wholly unnecessary. Kenichi was also characterized as someone too busy saving the world, while it was implied that Ippei and Megumi held feelings for each other as he teased her with jokes about looking at him shirtless and behaved violently protective of her when he saw her crying. Though by the end of Voltes V, Megumi never ends up with anyone. Unsurprisingly, Eva is the show's most hated character for two reasons: her unlikable personality and her solely existing to push the Steve/Jamie romance.
- While Kenichi didn't have a love interest or a girlfriend in the original anime, there were plans for one. She was a Boazanian named Marlene Rii and she was Katherine's younger sister.
- Eva is the second Camp Big Falcon member to be dismissed (the first was Apable).
