~ Evan rationalizing trying kill his own daughter. |
Evan Chapel is an antagonist in the Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode "Grow". He is a narcissistic sociopath who attempts to kill his own daughter to collect on a multimillion dollar trust fund, and frame fellow con artist and child murderer Nicole Wallace for her murder.
He was portrayed by Kevin J. O'Connor.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Evan is a doctor who became addicted to heroin in medical school, and used with his brother and fellow addict Larry. He quit using after marrying a woman named Monica and having a daughter, Gwen. He viewed his family as a mere inconvenience, getting in the way of his true goal: to retire to Mexico with enough money to feed his heroin addiction for the rest of his life. Larry shared the same goal, and conspired with Evan to kill Monica and Gwen in order to collect on a $5 million trust fund established by a lawsuit against a company whose products left Gwen susceptible to cancer.
Shortly after killing Monica, Evan met Nicole Wallace, and immediately saw through her sob story about her daughter's death; he realized that she murdered the girl, and would therefore be the perfect patsy to frame for murdering Gwen. They began dating, and Nicole became a surrogate mother to Gwen. Nicole did not trust Larry, however, and eventually murdered him, making his death look like an accidental heroin overdose.
In "Grow"[]
Detectives Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames investigate Larry's death as a murder, and suspect that Wallace, Goren's archnemesis, is responsible for the murders of Larry and Monica. They arrest Wallace, but Evan bails her out and tells her he wants to marry her. After learning about the lawsuit, Goren warns Evan that Gwen will be Nicole's next victim, but Evan defends her.
While watching Gwen one night, Nicole realizes that the suntan lotion Evan bought for Gwen is toxic and will give her cancer. She then realizes that he is trying to kill Gwen, and resolves to protect her at all costs. Goren, meanwhile, uncovers Evan's plan, and meets with her to apologize. Nevertheless, he says that Gwen will never be safe with her, and if she truly cares for the girl she will confess to Larry's murder and implicate Evan in killing Monica and attempting to kill Gwen. Instead, Nicole gives Goren the evidence he needs to arrest Evan for killing Monica, and kidnaps Gwen. Ultimately, however, she realizes that Goren is right that she can never have a normal life, lets Gwen go, and disappears.
Meanwhile, Goren and Eames arrest Evan for killing Monica and attempting to kill Gwen. Evan justifies his actions by saying that he can have more children, but five million dollars is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Evan is then presumably imprisoned for life.
