Evelyn Draper is the main antagonist of the 1971 thriller film Play Misty for Me.

She is a huge fan of the DJ David Garner who calls him to play Misty on the radio, as she gets to meets him and admit it was her on the phone, she constantly starts stalking him and harass him, as David tells her to stop, the situation gets worse.

She is portrayed by Jessica Walter.

Biography

Evelyn Draper is a fan of David Garner, she is first heard in the phone telling David to play Misty on the radio. As David goes to the bar he meets Evelyn (who went to the bar after hearing him mentioning it on the radio), the two go to her home and she admits shes the one who said him to play Misty, and then they then have sex.

Days later, Evelyn appears again in David's car, David sees that shes pretty obsessed with him and asks her to leave the car, Evelyn taunts him by taking his car keys, David takes the keys of her and drives away. Later at midnightm Evelyn gives David a gift at the front door, she interrupts him when he sees her gift and takes of her clothes outside, shocked, he puts her clothes back on and takes her inside. When David wakes up after Evelyn kisses him on the cheekm he realizes that she wrote on his mirror "E.D heart D.G."

The next day, she invites him to her home, he does come to her home only wanting to talk to her. Evelyn starts to realize that he is in love in Tobie which makes her enraged, and he leaves as she shouts at him. Evelyn tries to apologize to David but he ignores it. The next day Evelyn, stalks David and Tobie, making her furious and at midnight, she confronts him as it ends with her slicing her wrists in David's bathroom. She survives and is put to the hospital, when conscious, she seems to be very kind to David until she dreams of drowning and David not helping her. She asks David to be with her for a long time, hours later David leaves the room. Everything seems to be going fine until the next day. As she buys groceries for David but he says her that hes going to have business. When David's having business she harasses him again, making him force her into a taxi and sending her far away, thanks to her the business is ruined. However she starts becoming truly villainous as she sees David and Tobie together, she vandalizes the furniture inside his house and tries to kill the housekeeper, the housekeeper survives but is taken to a hospital and Evelyn is sent to therapy.

Days later, Evelyn calls David at his work telling him to play Misty but also that shes no longer insane, everything seems to be fine until Evelyn comes in David's house which Tobie is inside. Tobie doesn't realize first its Evelyn but when she shows her scars on her wrist Tobie realizes its Evelyn. Evelyn destroys a painting of David Garner and cuts Tobie's hair off, David realizes that one of the things Evelyn said to him on the phone was a line from a novel of Edgar Allan Poe. David drives in a rush to his home, Evelyn meanwhile kills a police officer, when David is home he finds Tobie strapped with tape, Evelyn attacks him and stabs him multiple times until David pushes of a ceiling window which makes her fall off the ceiling and fall to the sea, killing her.

Personality

Evelyn in the beginning is shown to be a normal kind fan of David Garner until her obsession was later shown that she was an extremely mentally ill, stalking and harassing David Garner. She is also shown to be a liar when she says David that she won't do something again but still does due to her obsession and faking that she is sane. She might be also a psychopath since shes willing to kill someone and manipulate. Even being in love with David, she seems to no longer feel any love to David at the end since she tries to kill him at the end.

Trivia

• Evelyn is probably inspired by Clint Eastwood's ex-girlfriend (who is the same guy who directed and starred as the main protagonist David Garner). After breaking up with his girlfriend, she started to stalk him and threatened to commit suicide.
• The shot of Evelyn's corpse in the sea at the end of the film is actually Jessica Walter herself.
