“ | Vogel: One day I found Richard -- he was my youngest -- at the bottom of our swimming pool, dead. At first I thought it was an accident. He wasn’t a strong swimmer. Then I realized the truth. ~ Evelyn Vogel’s backstory and reason for her actions |
Dr. Evelyn Vogel, also known as the Psychopath Whisperer, is a major character in Season 8 of the crime drama series Dexter. She's a neuropsychiatrist who specializes in the study of psychopaths, particularly children exhibiting psychopathic traits.
Evelyn later offers herself as a consultant to Miami Metro Homicide during the investigation of her serial killer son, Oliver Saxon (aka The Brain Surgeon). It's also revealed that Evelyn helped Harry Morgan develop the moral code by which his killer son Dexter operates. Upon meeting Dexter as an adult through Miami Metro and revealing this to him, she claims to have a deep understanding of Dexter's mind and sees him as a success story of her work, unlike her son.
She was portrayed by Charlotte Rampling.
Biography[]
Evelyn was born in England but lived in Miami during her marriage to Richard Vogel. She eventually had two sons: Daniel Vogel and Richard Vogel Jr.. One day, the eldest son, Daniel, drowned his brother in the family swimming pool because he got more attention. Evelyn and her husband found out Daniel murdered his brother, so she and her husband covered up his crimes and sent him to a mental health institution at age 14.
Daniel was supposedly killed in a fire that occurred inside the wing he lived in, but that turned out to be false, as he instead took the identity of one of the victims, Oliver Saxon, and eventually settled in Miami after exploring at least 12 different cities in 2 countries.
Due to her son killing his brother and her being a neuropsychiatrist even before this interaction, Evelyn started learning about psychopaths. One of her patients was Dexter Morgan, whom she developed a "code" for in which he would only kill people who deserved it, doing so at the behest of his adoptive father Harry. She also met Thomas Matthews at this time and returned to England before going back to Miami one year before the brain surgeon case.
