The Evil Eye is a supporting character in the manga Dandadan. The soul of a child killed as a sacrifice to the Tsuchinoko, the Evil Eye developed a strong hatred of humans and seeks to cause as much murder as possible.

Biography[]

Born around the late Edo period, the Evil Eye was originally a child who spent his life as a captive of the Kito Family cult. Isolated from the rest of the community, the child wanted nothing more than to have friends and to play games with the other children, but this would never come to pass. Eventually, the child was offered as a sacrifice to the Tsuchinoko. His soul later became a yokai, and continued to seek out the companionship he was deprived of throughout his life. After finding another family who was set to be sacrificed by the Kito family, the Evil Eye accidentally caused the parents to commit suicide, and the child was offered up as a sacrifice just as he was. Helpless to save him, the Evil Eye developed an intense hatred of humans.

Later on, teenager Jin "Jiji" Enjoji and his parents rented out a house owned by the Kito Family. Unbeknownst to them, they were secretly being prepared as sacrifices to the Tsuchinoko. The Evil Eye caused Jiji's parents to attempt suicide, but they were saved by Jiji as the latter had strong innate psychic powers and was immune to the Evil Eye's influence. Jiji sought out the help of several psychics, but the Evil Eye caused all of them to commit suicide. Eventually, Jiji turned to his childhood friend Momo Ayase and her grandmother Seiko for help. Momo, alongside her friend Ken "Okarun" Takakura, accompanied Jiji to his house to investigate the strange events occuring there.

The three of them eventually come to discover the truth of the Kito Family's actions and are themselves offered up as sacrifices to the Tsuchinoko. However, the Tsunchinoko is stopped by the Evil Eye, who establishes a psychic link with Jiji, allowing the teenager to discover the truth of the yokai's childhood. Overcome with sympathy, Jiji travels down to the Evil Eye's original cage deep in the earth and agrees to be his playmate, welcoming the Evil Eye into his body. However, because the Evil Eye thinks of "playing" to be synonymous with murder, he quickly takes control of Jiji's body and attempts to murder Momo and Okarun. Okarun manages to briefly hold him off while Momo escapes to the surface and deals with the Tsuchinoko, but the Evil Eye eventually manages to make it up to the surface where he fights with Momo, the Kito Family matriarch, and a village monk. The Evil Eye quickly manages to get the better of them, but before he can kill them he is intercepted by the alien Mr. Shrimp, alongside Seiko and their sentient anatomy mannequin friend Taro. Seiko, who had placed warding charms inside of Taro's body, tricks the Evil Eye into attacking him, causing him to come apart and reform around the Evil Eye, trapping him inside.

Later on, the Ayases have a dinner party with their friends, at which point they realize that Jiji and the Evil Eye are able to switch who's in control if their body comes into contact with hot or cold liquids. Momo, Okarun, and their friend Aira Shiratori take it upon themselves to closely monitor Jiji to keep the Evil Eye in check. Okarun, Jiji, and Aira temporarily move in with Momo while Seiko prepares the exorcism for the Evil Eye. After a number of accidents with Jiji and the Evil Eye, Seiko finally has the exorcism ready, inviting punk rock Hayashi performers to her house to get rid of the Evil Eye for good.

Partway through the ritual, however, Jiji begs for them to stop. Despite the Evil Eye's murderous tendencies, Jiji still feels a great amount of sympathy for him and doesn't want him to die. Seiko eventually agrees to Jiji's pleas, and Momo, Okarun, and Aira continue to go about their daily lives while closely monitoring the Evil Eye. Meanwhile, Seiko gives Jiji spiritual training to keep the Evil Eye in check. Eventually, however, one accident too many begins to break out, and Seiko begins to reconsider her decision to halt the ritual. The night before the Evil Eye is to be exorcised, however, Okarun secretly starts training with Turbo Granny and Aira. After finally figuring out how to increase the speed of his technique, Okarun challenges the Evil Eye one last time. Having figured out that the Evil Eye simply considers killing to be the same thing as playing, Okarun manages to give the Evil Eye a good fight, but right before he runs out of juice, he gets the Evil Eye to agree to stop trying to kill people, and in exchange the two of them can fight every week. The Evil Eye eagerly agrees to his offer, seeing Okarun as a playmate rather than an enemy.

From that point on, the Evil Eye becomes a semi-ally to the gang who occassionally helps them, but only if he feels like he's getting to "play" like he normally does. At some points, such as during the kaiju arc, the Evil Eye does nothing while the gang is fighting for their lives. At other points, such as in the Space Globalists arc, the gang is able to convince the Evil Eye to help them.

Personality[]

Evil eye

The Evil Eye is very cruel and murderous, being a vengeful ghost who seeks the destruction of humans. As time goes on, however, it becomes increasingly clear that the Evil Eye is still mentally a child and simply sees fighting as his way of playing. After agreeing to refrain from attacking people other than Okarun (and only on Tuesdays), the Evil Eye continues to go about Jiji's life as a high schooler when the yokai is in control. Having zero understanding of social norms, the Evil Eye behaves in extremely eccentric and bizarre ways in public, causing onlookers who don't know the truth of its existence to be confused as to why Jiji is acting so weird.
