Stop hand

You are no commander! You are a threat to the mission! Your methods are stupid! Your progress has been stupid! Your intelligence is stupid! For the sake of the mission, you must be terminated!!
~ GIR in the process of overthrowing Zim.

GIR is the deuteragonist of the 2001-2006 television series Invader Zim and the secondary antagonist of the 2019 Netflix film Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus.

He was voiced by Rosearik Rikki Simons.

Personality[]

In contrast to Zim, who is driven by a desire to conquer Earth, GIR does not harbor any hatred or dislike towards anyone. Instead, he often spouts nonsense and engages in playful behavior when given orders by Zim. GIR is designed to follow the orders of his master. However, GIR is widely known for being unstable, unpredictable, and often doing whatever he wants, despite Zim's attempts to control him. GIR's personality can be described as naive, chaotic, and frankly idiotic. He frequently displays himself as a nuisance to his master and is prone to outbursts. GIR's low intelligence can be both an inconvenience and a help to Zim in different situations.

However, despite his usual antics, GIR does have occasional moments of clarity. While he may cause chaos and problems, he has also shown instances of awareness and notable competence. He demonstrates the ability to think critically and question the wisdom of certain actions. In "Walk for Your Lives," GIR contemplates whether making an explosion go faster would have negative consequences. And in "Bad, Bad Rubber Piggy," he questions the decision to send a machine into the past to destroy Dib.

Periodically, GIR enters a state known as "Duty Mode." This mode is triggered when Zim gives him an order, and it is characterized by GIR's teal parts and eyes flashing red, his voice changing to a harsh, deep, and rough tone, and his behavior becoming alert and obedient. During Duty Mode, GIR follows orders diligently, salutes, and responds with a respectful "Yes, sir!".

Here, GIR enters a more bloodlusted state and becomes far more competent and responsive, displaying a lust for knowledge. He is willing to do whatever is necessary to carry out the mission, even if it means killing his own master if he perceives him as a threat to the mission. He views Zim's intellect and skills as hindrances to the mission and sees him as "stupid". GIR has also demonstrated the ability to drain human minds and acquire a vast amount of knowledge about the world, including information about notable individuals such as Professor Membrane, who is portrayed as a supergenius These methods and plans were quickly devised by GIR to successfully take over the world, something that Zim has been failing to achieve on his own. However, these moments of complete functionality are mostly short-lived, and GIR quickly reverts back to his gleeful and hyperactive self.

It is worth noting that GIR's intermittent lucidity is likely beneficial for Zim. If GIR were fully aware all the time, he would realize that Zim poses a threat to their mission to conquer Earth and might eliminate him. Therefore, GIR's unpredictable and whimsical nature serves as a safeguard for Zim.

Biography[]

GIR was created from scrap parts by the Almighty Tallest and given to Zim as his robotic companion. Unlike a regular SIR Unit, GIR has a energetic and excitable personality, displaying mental disability. He is happy-go-lucky, enthusiastic, and extremely hyperactive. GIR has a tendency to eat just about anything, regardless of whether it is edible or not.

Although GIR is one of the main characters in Invader Zim, he only played a main role in three episodes. In other episodes, he either played a secondary role or appeared as a cameo. It is worth noting that there was a cancelled episode in which GIR would have played another major role.

In Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, GIR creates a song for Zim to manipulate children across the world into holding hands with their Peace Day bracelets, which causes the earth to teleport in line with the Irken Armada's path of conquest. After which he assists Zim in taking the planet over as they wait for the Tallest to arrive.
