Jeff Winger, also known as Evil Jeff, is a minor antagonist in Season 3 and the overarching antagonist of Season 4 of the NBC sitcom Community. He is the leader of the Evil Study Group, and an alternate version of the Prime Jeff Winger from an alternate timeline in which he rolled a one, sending the Study Group, and by extension Greendale College, into chaos, as well as losing an arm. Though initially ambivalent about the concept of timelines, he later leads the Evil Study Group on a quest to infiltrate the Prime Timeline and darken it. In actuality, he is a figment of Abed and Jeff's imagination.
Like the main timeline Jeff, he is portrayed by Joel McHale, who also portrayed David in The Bear, David Carruthers in It's a Wonderful Knife, Victor Verliezer in Milo Murphy's Law, Ultra-Humanite in Stargirl and HD DVD in seasons 6-8 of Regular Show.
Biography[]
Evil Jeff's origin stems from the episode Remedial Chaos Theory. The premise of the episode sees Troy and Abed hosting a housewarming party after moving into their new apartment. During the party, Abed's doorbell rings, implying the arrival of the pizzaman. When all members refuse to go get it, Jeff opts to roll a Yahtzee dice determining who will get the pizza. The episode then follows seven timelines, each focusing on a universe where someone different went to get the pizza, with the final one being the canonical version, in which Jeff is forced to get the pizza.
Evil Jeff stems from the universe in which Jeff rolled a one, forcing Troy to leave to get the pizza, nicknamed The Darkest Timeline, in which Troy's absence sends the Study Group into chaos. The result leaves Pierce presumed dead (though he is later revealed to have faked his death), Shirley an alcoholic, Annie reprimanded to a psychiatric institution after her guilt drove her insane, Jeff without an arm, Troy with a damaged larynxe, and Britta with a blue steak in her hair.
Days later, during a meeting, Abed realizes that the Study Group is in the Darkest Timeline, much to the frustration of Britta, who points out the terrible things that happened to them. Jeff mocks Britta, who has only put a blue streak in her hair, in comparison to his loss of an arm. Abed suggests that the group commit to being evil and proposes that the group finds a way to go the Prime Timeline, in which Abed prevented Jeff from rolling a one, and reclaim the group's lives. Upon hearing this, Evil Jeff proceeds to mock Evil Abed for this concept and leaves the room alongside Britta and Shirley.
At some point, however, Evil Jeff opted to embrace his evilness, and schemed to go to the prime timeline, albeit to darken it as opposed to reclaim his old life, falling into his old past of apathy and self-serving. At the end of the Season 4 episode Intro to Knots, Prime Abed has a vision of Evil Jeff using his abilities as a lawyer to get a criminally insane Evil Annie out of prison. Despite Evil Annie having both robbed numerous drug stores and killed people, Evil Jeff convinces the jury that putting Evil Annie in prison is robbing the world of her looks. Upon reuniting with her, he reveals his intentions to destroy the prime timeline, and makes out with her, no longer phased by the age gap between the two.
Evil Jeff makes his final and most important appearance as the main antagonist of the Season 4 finale, Advanced Introduction to Finality. On the day Prime Jeff is set to graduate from college, Evil Jeff and Evil Annie journey to the Prime Timeline, with Evil Jeff wielding an advanced paintball gun able to send people to The Darkest Timeline. Upon arriving and reuniting with Evil Annie, Evil Jeff, wielding a robotic replica of his old arm, sets out to make Prime Jeff take his old job back. To do this, Evil Jeff, impersonating Prime Jeff, insults all members of the Prime Study Group, making them reject Prime Jeff. However, Prime Abed realizes Evil Jeff's true identity, causing Evil Jeff to send Abed to The Darkest Timeline, in which Chang is still ruler of Greendale. Meanwhile, he has Evil Annie attempt to seductively manipulate Prime Jeff into taking his old job back. When Prime Jeff refuses, Evil Jeff reveals himself, and attempts to force him to do so anyway, before attempting to shoot him with the paintball gun, only for Prime Chang to sacrifice himself.
Prime Jeff escapes, and Evil Jeff, accompanied by the rest of the Evil Study Group, set out to hunt down the rest of the Study Group. Ultimately, the Prime Study Group manage to use their own Paintball Guns, given to them by a remorseful Evil Abed, to fight back, and ultimately, all but Evil Jeff remain. During their fight, however, Prime Abed explains to Jeff that the events of the episode exist within his mind to reconcile his inner confusion over taking his job or staying with the study group. Because of this, Prime Jeff calls out to Evil Jeff, who shoots at him. Prime Jeff, however, manages to freeze Evil Jeff's paintball, before shooting him back, before returning to reality.
Evil Jeff is then seen in the end tag of the episode, angered at Evil Troy and Evil Abed hosting their fake morning show.
