The Evil Spirit is one of the main antagonists (alongside Angela Wytte) of the 2015 fantasy webcomic Hooky.
It is a vicious and manipulative spirit from the underworld summoned by Alice and Romas for their haunted house, but after seeing the potential in Dani it decides to join her by possessing her cat Minino. It starts to follow her pretending to be her friends, but in reality it only attempts to break her down psychologically in order to manipulate her and feed on her desperation. After successfully causing her to break by making her arrive late to Dorian's supposed execution, it manipulates Dani for three years in order to fuel the war between humans and witches while also feeding on her desperation.
Appearence[]
When possessing Minino, the spirit is just a regular black cat with dark furr, red eyes and black iris. When possessing Dani, the spirit obviously have Dani appearence, with long black hairs, pale skin and a long black dress that reaches her feet. The only different features it have compared to the regular Dani are it's red eyes with black iris, which are the indication that the spirit is possessing the body of someone. When in her body, it also have a far more deranged and psychopatic expression compared to the apathetic face of Dani while she is under her own curse.
The true form of the Evil Spirit is, however, a formless black entity, similiar to a dark cloud of smoke with two bright red eyes which are it's only distinctive feature. It also act like smoke when entering inside people to possess them, fluidly moving from one body to another without anyone noticing.
Personality[]
The Evil Spirit is an extremely cruel, sadistic and manipulative being, who uses its mind tricks to influence others. It likes to spread as much chaos and misery as possible in order to feed from them and grow stronger, taking any chance it can to make other people suffer in order to have a feast with their desperation. In order to spread as much suffering as possible, it usually obeys and follows the orders of the person it is attached to, but pushing this orders to the extreme, like when Romas and Alice simply asks it to keep the kids busy in its mind space, but doing it with so much cruelty that even they are horrified.
To gain Dani's trust, it pretends to be on friendly terms with her, showing a lot of restrain in doing harm to other to not make her suspect that its true intentions were to break her psychologically. Once it manages to do it by making her arrive late to Dorian's execution, it takes full advantage of the broken mental state Dani ends up in after cursing herself, showing that beneath the façade of a obedient spirit there actually is a manipulative being who proceeds to control Dani's action for the following three years to spread as much misery and suffering as possible.
Rather then straight up killing others immediately, it usually prefers to drag them down in the pits of despair in order to feed on their suffering and become stronger, proceeding to than kill only some individuals in a group in order to make the survivors suffer as much as possible. Despite this, it can be somewhat of a coward, trying to run away the moment things don't go as it wants to, something that it sometimes it is forced to do because of being in the body of a defenseless cat.
Overall, the Evil Spirit is one of the few characters in the series that is evil for the sake of it, deeply enjoying the chaos it spreads and more then willing to cause worldwide disasters and wars in order to achieve that.
Biography[]
Summoning and meeting with Dani[]
The Evil Spirit is a being from the Underworld who was summoned into the physical world by Alice and Romas. The two wanted to use it and its powers as part of their haunted house in an attempt to make money and open a school of dark magic, and since the Spirit feeds upon suffering and evil it decides to obey them. When Angela, Hans, Hilda and the other witches conquer the Kingdom of Monica's father, her and her friends Dani, Dorian, Nico, Mark, Ivy, Anne and Amir run into Alice and Romas while running away, who offer to let them stay for the night in their haunted house. However, their true objective is to discover who they are and what they are planning, and to do this they order the Spirit to use its powers to trap them within a nightmare.
Once everyone is asleep, the Spirit traps Dani in a nightmare in which she is rejected by her friends and her brother, causing her to run away in desparation before tricking her into seeing Dorian and making her say that they want to use some potions they have created to cure people and make the relationship between humans and witches better. Alice and Romas hear this, noticing that all of the kids seems to be in pain because of the nightmares caused by the Spirit, but in the end they decide to steal the potion and use them to advertize their failing school, all while kidnapping Dani and asking to the Evil being to keep the other busy. The Spirit happily comply, trapping each of them in a personalized nightmare of their worst fears, with Ivy trapped in a room with spiders, Anne in a ravine at an high height, Amir in a small room isolated by everyone and Mark in a world where no one remember his friends.
Fortunately, Romas and Alice accidentally steps on Nico, awakening him and allowing him to wake up everyone else, saving Dorian just before the Spirit makes him jump a building while making him dream of Dani jumping down a tower. The group finds Romas and Alice, who have Dani in a magic cage, and attempts to save her, but as they do the potions they prepared have some unwanted side effects and turn everyone that drank it into a werewolf. Meanwhile, in her nightmare, Dani meets the Evil Spirit, asking it to let her go, but the being refuses, saying that he feeds of evil and despair, and obey those that can help him spread it, which is the reason as to why it is obeying Alice and Romas. Dani asks it to obey her instead since she is more evil than them, but the Spirit doesn't believe her, until it notices a interesting black smoke around her, which makes it realize that it can have a feast upon her despair if it plays its hands well.
For this reason, it frees her from the nightmare and the cage, possessing Dani's cat Minino to have a physical form to inhabit, but after it does both of them see the chaos caused by the people turned into werewolves. Dani asks the Spirit to use its power to block them, but it initially refuse since it wouldn't cause any suffering as it wish. The Wytte insists, telling it that it promised to obey her, at which point the Spirit decides to play the long game and obey her for now, blocking the werewolves enough time to allow Dani and the others to make them go back to normal. After this, Romas and Alive are arrested by the guards, and the group proceed forward, with no one else aside from Dani knowing about the Spirit within Minino.

After the Spirit joins Dani, the group finds out that William should be in a desert, possibly close to the Kingdom of Amir. The group start to travel to there, only to have their car stuck. Dani asks the Spirit to help, but it reply extremely annoyed, angry that she is continuosly asking its help when it only wants to do stuff that could cause suffering. Eventually, they are able get their mean of transportation unstuck and proceed to arrive to the kingdom, where they discover that the population is constantly attacked by a Dragon who is killing the civilians, much to the Spirit's happiness since it cruelly smile while everyone else is horrified.
When the group decides to help and slay the dragon, Aisha, Amir's sister, lock them in their room to prevent them from risking their lives so that she can kill the dragon herself. Not knowing how to get out without wands, Dani asks the Spirit to help them, and it agrees simply because it thinks that it is a suicidial mission and they will all likely die, something that would please him a lot. The Spirit than uses it's magic to make Carlo, Dorian's flying frog, bigger so that they can use it to reach Aisha quickly since they know the Dragon is the only thing that can lead them to William's location. The group arrives as Aisha is about to kill the Dragon, but she is interrupted by Damien, who wants to save William too, and as the Dragon fly away him, Monica and Dorian start chasing him.
As they go, however, Carlo return to his normal size since the Spirit nullified its magic, telling Dani that the deal was only to bring them to the Dragon. Dani asks for its help, but the Spirit tells her that she have a wand now and she can use a magic to make Carlo big herself, knowing full well that Dani's spell are curses and as such she risks killing him, but the Spirit try to manipulate her into doing it anyways. Before she does, however, she is interrupted by Nico, who tells her that they found a way to follow the Dragon, much to the Spirit's disappointment.
Following the trail of blood of the Dragon, the group arrive to a canyon where Dani steps on a magic trap of the witches, flying upwards while giant animals attack the rest of the group. The Spirit tells Dani that she risk to die if she falls from this height, but she manages to land safely with a spell, asking the Spirit for help in protecting her friends, which it does by blocking them. Dani attacks the animals, but she is quickly overwhelmed by them as she asks the Spirit help again, but it refuses since she said she would do it on her own, at which point Dani decide to retreat. As she run away, she asks the Spirit to break her friends free since they are still blocked by its spell, with the cat initially refusing, only being convinced by Dani's threat. After this, the Spirit remains on the sidelines for the rest of the rescue mission, simply watching the events unfold.
After everything ends with the rescue of William and the death of Hans Wytte, the father of Dani and Dorian, the former seems to be severely affected by this, asking the Spirit to just bring them to the Kingdom of Amir's mother, to which it teleports everyone there. Thanks to Monica's father, who wants to bring peace between humans and witches, Dani seems to fell better, but that night her mother, Angela Wytte, secretly infiltrates the castle and assassinates the King and her wife in their sleep. The Spirit, knowing this, tells Dani to follow it in the middle of the night, trying to bring her to the room in which their assassination took place, but Angela arrives in time to block her before she can see the corpses, much to the Spirit disappointment. The woman than proceed to kidnap her daughter, unknowingly bringing with her Nico (who was turned small by Dani to protect him) and the Spirit itself in Minino's body, who jumps on top of the dragon.
Later, Angela tries to sway Dani on her side while Dorian and the others go to the Kingdom of William's father, where the latter decides to execute the witch out of his hate for his kind. After discovering this, the witches, alongside Dani, attempts to go and save Dorian, but the Spirit intervine and causes every type of accident to slow them down in order to make them arrive too late, with Dani regretting ever accepting its help and telling it that if they arrive too late she will make it pay. But unfortunately, they arrive too late to the execution, and while Dorian is completely fine thank to switching place with a dummy at the last minute with Damien's help, Dani and the other witches are unaware of this. Falling into despair while thinking that her twin brother died, Dani cries and is overwhelmed by pain, ending up accidentally cursing herself in the process and becoming an apathetic shell of her former self with no lingering memory.
Three years of manipulation[]
In the next three years, the Spirit takes complete advantage of Dani's current condition, making sure she stays this way by entering her dreams and tormenting her with nightmares to remind her of Dorian's death, preventing anyone from helping her and ordering her around in order to fuel the war between humans and witches. Thanks to its influence over Dani, the Kingdom of the witches expand to at least two neighboring kingdoms and causing thousands of deaths, with the Spirit continuing to manipulate Dani, who only have Nico by her side, feasting on her desparation with much delight. It even goes as far as to order Dani to attack other witches just for trying to help her get better, brutally attacking a old witch that was trying to help her with some potions.
When the witches hear of the marriage that is about to happen between Monica and William to unite the Kingdoms, Angela decides to attack them during the cerimony, with Dani accepting to kill Monica under the orders of the Spirit. The group of witches arrive to the cerimony, which however is actually a trap studied by Monica herself who, thanks to Demian's help, manage to trap all of them in a forcefield of energy. Everyone shoots huge quantities of potions towards Dani, in the hope of making her go back to her normal self, but the Spirit acts quickly and uses her magic to create monstrous appendicies to protect Dani, before creating another one to stab Monica in the shoulder. Thanks to the Spirit's help, with which she shared her powers, Dani casually pass throught the barrier, with the being annoyed that it needs to constantly help her. The Wytte arrives in front of Monica, ready to kill her just like her mother and the Spirit are saying, but before she can do it the Queen is able to make her drink some of the potion.
For a moment she thinks that it worked, before Dani suddenly shows red eyes and a psychotic look, now possessed by the Spirit itself who entered her body to prevent the potion to have any effect. The Spirit starts to taunt Monica, telling her that it saw her fears and she is pathetic, but she kick it in the stomach, saying she is not that person anymore. The Spirit go back to Minino's body, ordering her to retreat since she can't deal with this many people, at which point Dani break a hole in the cathedral and escapes alongside the Spirit in the body of the cat. Dani and the Spirit retreat in the woods, where the latter tells her that she needs to eat and asks her to let it possess her so that it can help her find food, but she refuses. Soon after they stumble upon a deer, at which point the Spirit possess Dani regardless and forces her eat the deer raw. A hunter and his son pass by while she is eating and notice the carcass of the animal, at which point they run away scared while the Spirit sadistically taunts them.
Final battle with the Spirit[]
After removing the powers from Angela and temporarely putting a hold at the treat of the witches, Monica, Dorian, Nico, Mark, Damien and Aisha go to search for Dani in the woods, hearing of the meeting she had with the hunter. They arrive in his home, meeting with his family and staying for the night, but as they sleep Dani appears to them, with the Spirit ordering her to kill everyone except for one. However, after hearing Dorian's desperate pleads for Dani to go back to normal, the Spirit change his plans and decide to cause him as much desperation as possible, ordering Dani to burn down the whole house with everyone inside before the two fly away. Everyone manages to get out of the structure safely, with Dorian going to the chase of her sister, soon followed by Monica and Damien. Dorian manages to hit Dani with a spell while chasing her, making the possessed cat and the witch fall, with the Wytte helping his sister to fall safely. He than approaches her, attempting to make her recognize him, at which point the Spirit decides to possess her once again, taking over her body to kill the annoyance.
Possessing Dani's body, the Spirit attempts to kills Dorian by burying him in spikes of rock, but he manages to escape and, looking at her red eyes, understands that she is possessed. Dorian tries to attack it, but before he can do it the Spirit hits his wand and destroy it, wounding him while taunting him that he can't do anything to stop it. Dani's try to rebel against the Spirit because it is hurting her head, but the being once again forcefully possess her, claiming she is not using her body anyway. Donato, Dorian's dragon, attempts to attack the possessed Dani, but she quickly attack back and severely wound him. The Spirit uses Dorian's desperation of seeing his dragon wounded to grow stronger and keep Dani's body to itself, while Damien and Monica arrive to the scene. The Spirit attempts to attack them, breaking apart Damien's barrier and attacking Dorian, making him lose coscience to prevent him from revealing its existence to the others.
The Spirit in Dani's body attack Monica and Damien, saying that their desperation is giving it strenght and that it plans to kill almost all of them so that the suffering of the survivors can make it strong enough to keep Dani's body forever. Damien manages to hit Dani with a transmutation spell, wanting to turn her into a small snake, but thanks to its powers it actually turns into a giant snake who starts to chase the two of them. Monica and Damien manage to evade the beast by riding their broom, but it is also able to fly and give chase to them, wanting to eat them whole. They are able to enter a cave were it is unable to reach them, and Damien uses another spell to turn her back into a human, kicking the Spirit out of her body and back into Minino's body.
The Spirit is frustrated for what happened, wanting to gain strenght once again in order to possess Dani's body and planning to spread chaos through the world with it. It plans to bite Dorian's jugular while he is unconscious, but before it does Dani arrives, chased by the whole group. Knowing Dani is still apathetic and under its influence, the Spirit order her to kill everyone since it is now annoyed and tired of playing around, at which point she tackle Mark and prepare to kill him under the Spirit's order. Before she can do it, however, she is blocked by Nico, the only person that Dani still know since he was with her for the three years in which she was under the curse. He tells her that they are her friends and asks her why she is doing it, with her replying that it's because "he" is telling her. Nico wants to understand who is doing it, noticing Minino trying to sneak away and realizing he is actually the host of the Spirit who is influencing her.
The Spirit once again tries to order Dani to kill them, but she is tackled by Dorian, who waked up thanks to Aisha and thinks the Spirit is still in her body. Nico, knowing that it is actually inside the cat, tells the others to catch him, with Mark grabbing Minino by the tail and Nico revealing to everyone that the enemy is inside the cat. The Spirit, however, manages to trap everyone in a dream, making Dorian see his friends insulting him, but he quickly realize it's just a trick and walks past them. It than tries to use his dead father and his mother to manipulate him without success, at which point Dorian arrives to Dani and tries to help her. However doubts starts to overwhelm him, and he realizes that the Spirit's previous attempts were to make him believe Dani was actually there, before understanding that this is actually the Spirit that is trying to lock him in a nightmare.
With this realization, Dorian punches the fake Dani in the face, revealing it is actually the Spirit, who attempts to take the opportunity to try and possess him. He is, however, able to reach Damien's wand and use it to isolate the Spirit, before finally banishing it once and for all, but not before it taunts him about the fact that it wasn't the only thing keeping Dani in that state, and that his sister is never coming back. Despite its defeat, the Spirit's influence is felt throught the rest of the series, but its legacy is undone once and for all when the war finally ends and Dani's curse is broken, proving the Spirit wrong.
Trivia[]
- Despite having an important role in the series and being the main culprint of what happens after the three years timeskip, the Spirit is only introduced in the comic in Episode 88 out of 222 and doesn't have a big role until Dorian's execution.
