The Evil Spirit is a minor antagonist of the Cartoon Network animated miniseries Over the Garden Wall. It is a man-eating spirit that possesses Lorna, forcing Auntie Whispers to keep it in check via a bell.
Since it spent most of its screentime possessing Lorna, it was voiced by Shannyn Sossamon.
Appearance[]
Whenever the spirit takes control of Lorna, it distorts her face into a grotesque skull-like one with a nostril, long crooked teeth and glowing eyes. After getting exorcised from Lorna's body, its true form is revealed to be blue and skull-like, implying that it either specifically chooses that look to inspire fear, is cursed to live in it or never a human to begin with.
Biography[]
The spirit's past is largely unknown, but at some point it possessed Lorna and used her body to eat people. Due to this, Auntie Whispers decided to keep Lorna working and use a bell to keep it in check, as well as forbidding visitors to save them from being eaten. Unfortunately, it wasn't always successful, since the spirit had resurfaced a couple of times to eat others, leaving only their bones.
When Wirt and Greg comes to Auntie Whispers' house, they initially believe that Whispers is an evil witch who is forcing Lorna to work for her, and Greg has his frog eat the bell while the two take Lorna to outside, believing that they're saving her. However, by then the spirit takes control and reveals itself, intending to eat Wirt and Greg. The brothers run through the forest, with the spirit following them.
Once catching them up, the spirit attempts to eat them, but Greg shakes his frog so that the bell will ring. As a result, the spirit can't endure the bell anymore and escapes Lorna's body before vanishing, freeing her at last.
Afterwards, Auntie Whispers reveals that she didn't want to banish the spirit completely for fear of Lorna leaving her, but Lorna says that she will stay with her.
