The Exotech Larva is the second boss in Serious Sam: The Second Encounter.
Once a normal insect, the Exotech Larva was modified by Mental to serve as his pet and loyal guardian. After many failed attempts by the Larva to kill him, Mental reassigned it guard a portal that could give him trouble if left unchecked.
Appearance[]
As the name suggests, the Exotech Larva is an overgrown insect larva with cybernetic parts attached to it. It possesses no legs or other appendages, so its back has been connected to a rail system on the ceiling of its chamber to make it capable of movement. On either side of its body are mechanical arms with plasma weaponry attached to them that launch bouncing plasma balls at its targets. Should both of its arms be destroyed or otherwise rendered unusable, the Exotech Larva can extend two antennae close to its neck, which can shoot highly precise and destructive laser beams.
Biography[]
With the blessing of Mayan wind deity Kukulkán, Sam was allowed to use the time portal he was protecting as a sign of respect. The portal transported Sam to Persepolis in ancient Babylon. Still quite far away from the backup ship the Sirians left behind that Sam needs to reach to continue his pursuit of Mental, his AI implant NETRICSA informs Sam that the next portal should be located within the fabled Tower of Babel somewhere beyond the sacred temple of Gilgamesh. She also warned Sam that legends speak of a beast lurking inside the tower, hoping it to just be a myth. As expected, Sam encountered heavy resistance by Mental's forces but eventually reached his destination.
To enter the tower Sam had to fight his way around it and collect three sacred tablets of wisdom to prove his worthiness. Unfortunately, it turned out that the beast was indeed real and another of Mental's minions. Mental created the Exotech Larva after the initial success of his Bio-mechanoids in an attempt to make the perfect obeying bodyguard. After putting an ordinary insect larva through a strength multiplicator and enhancing it with cybernetics it turned out that the Exotech Larva was a beast so extraordinarily stupid and aggressive that not even Mental could control it. He spent many hours trying to teach it the difference between its master and a common caterpillar, but gave up after its 17th assassination attempt and decided to put its ferocity to use elsewhere.
The chamber of the Exotech Larva was outfitted with metal rails on the ceiling to allow the Exotech Larva to move around and four generators with which it could recharge its energy and heal its wounds. Destroying said generators was vital to Sam's success, otherwise the Larva could simply outlast him in combat. Throughout their battle, the Larva continuously spawned smaller Biopods to go after its prey, which traveled along the ground at high speeds and exploded on contact. Once both of its arms were destroyed, the Exotech Larva extended two antennae as a backup weapon, firing highly precise lasers at Sam, forcing him to hide from its view by utilizing the many pillars in the arena.
Eventually Sam triumphed over the beast, causing it to explode into a shower of blood and guts and opening the portal that would bring him closer to his goal.

- The Biopods spawned by the Exotech Larva lack a NETRICSA file because they are considered projectiles in-game, rather than their own entities.
- The Exotech Larva's boss theme is later reused for the boss fight against Cecil the Dragon in Serious Sam 2.
