The Eye of the Midnight Sun are the main antagonists of the first saga in the Black Clover franchise.
A group of reincarnated elves, they swore vengeance on Clover Kingdom after the massacre of the Elf Tribe during Licht and Tetia's wedding, thus conducting attacks on several locations to steal the magic stones.
History[]
400 years before the events of Black Clover, the original members used to be the members of the Elf Tribe, a group in conflict against the royals of the neighboring Clover Kingdom, who used to envy them due to having higher levels of mana. Despite this, several members like Fana and Vetto were optimistic about a peaceful resolution of the conflict, inspired from their leader Licht.
During Licht and Tetia's wedding, the Elf Tribe was massacred by the royals from Clover Kingdom, leading to the deaths of majority of the elves.
Many years later, Patolli was resurrected by an unknown force which he believed to be Licht's doing, due to which he decided to start anew. He was reincarnated into the body of William Vangeance, the captain of Golden Dawn. Vangeance accepted the possession due to seeing someone who wasn't afraid of his face, as Patolli will use this moment to mark most of the Golden Dawn and some of the Captains and Vice-Captains.
Patolli will later hire the services of Valtos, Sally and Rades Spirito, who help him acquire humans to reincarnate his friends Rhya, Fana and Vetto. Due to his own contempt for humans and the trio's treacherous nature, Patolli will secretly mark Valtos, Sally and Rades while falsely assuring them they are going to ascend to their true forms.
Soon enough, the Eye of the Midnight Sun will begin their goal to collect all the Magic Stones.
Heath Grice is contracted by Patolli to retrieve the Magic Stone rumored to be in Sosshi, as due to his hatred from commoners, he begun to exterminate the villagers only to be stopped by Asta and Magna. To protect Patolli's identity, Grice kills himself.
Not long after that, the Eye of the Midnight Sun orchestrates an attack on the Royal Capital during the meeting of all the Captains, spearheaded by Rades and Valtos. The attack is a smokescreen hiding the true intentions to steal the Magic Stone from Fuegeleon Vermillion. The attack is successful when Rades lures Fuegeleon to Licht's location, who uses his powers to critically injure him.
Few months later, Vetto leads an expedition to the Underwater Temple in order to seize the Magic Stone located there. Despite Vetto and his team killing several of the guarding Mages and severely injuring the Underwater Temple's main forces, a timely intervention by the Black Bulls renders the mission a failure, leading to the second death of Vetto and the Clover Kingdom learning the full scope of their plans.
After the failure of Fana's mission in the Witch Kingdom with her death and her failing to retrieve the magic stones, Patolli decides to invade Clover Kingdom directly, as he faced Julius Novachrono who held the last magic stones. After a protracted battle, Patolli managed to trick Julius into overusing his mana and killed him with the distraction, getting the last 2 stones, while Valtos also retrieved the other magic stone with their own attack on the Black Bulls hideout.
After getting the magic stones, Patolli sacrifices Rades, Valtos and Sally as fuel to reincarnate the elves across Clover Kingdom, all so that they could wipe humans from Clover Kingdom and re-establish the Elf Tribe.
