IMAGE_FRIEND, or simply known as FRIEND, is a minor antagonist in the 2018 indie RPG Deltarune.
They are a mysterious recurring entity that appears multiple times during the game, watching Kris and the Lightners throughout their multiple journeys through the dark worlds. They are heavily theorized to be connected to the Strange Someone that caused Spamton and Jevil to go insane.
Appearance[]
FRIEND initially appears as a face with a wide slasher smile with a yellow and pink eye that resembles Spamton’s glasses. In Ralsei's monologue about how the Dark Worlds are created, they appear as a shadowy, cat-like creature with a body similar to the Endogeny amalgamate from UNDERTALE. In the Sword Route video game, they appear as a disembodied head emerging from the floor.
Biography[]
It is unknown how exactly FRIEND came into being, but they appear to be a Darkner as implied by Ralsei’s monologue in Chapter 3.
Chapter 2: A Cyber's World[]
When heading back to the far side of the far left room in the basement of Queen's mansion after triggering the door to close, their face will appear for a split second before disappearing into the darkness.
Chapter 3: Late Night[]
FRIEND makes a cameo during Ralsei’s monologue about how the Dark Worlds are created. They initially appear as a silhouette of Endogeny from Undertale, but their face soon materializes on its head, and then laughs while lunging towards the screen.
During the Sword Route, FRIEND can be seen in two separate instances during Kris’ first play though of the original version of Tenna’s game. There are two hidden rooms on either side of the pyramid on the first board. One room has two of FRIEND’s eyes appear for a split second while the other room has his smile appear. FRIEND makes their proper reappearance during the Shadow Mantle Holder’s boss fight, serving as enemies that Kris can kill to get healing items.
Chapter 4: Prophecy[]
The first time FRIEND can appear is during the Battat minigame hosted by one of the Mike impersonators. After reaching around one million points on the minigame, FRIEND’s face will appear and looks at the SOUL as they fly by.
The second time FRIEND appears is in the Third Sanctuary. When the Lightners walk down a secret dark room that holds an item in a chest, they press a yellow switch that causes a sound wave to form, which can illuminate the area to reveal FRIEND’s face hidden on a path out of the player’s reach.
Trivia[]
- FRIEND makes a few appearances on the Spamton Sweepstakes charity website. They can appear when clicking on a chair on Deltarune.com/chair multiple times. It will prompt a jump scare revealing FRIEND’s eyes. The second appearance is on the secret Cat Petterz mini game where they have a chance of appearing if the user clicks on enough cats.
- During the Battat mini game (as well as the Cat Petterz mini game on Deltarune.com), FRIEND's pink eye is changed to a magenta color. Whether or not this change is significant is unknown.
- After the reveal that FRIEND is a cat-like entity, some fans adopted a humorous head canon that they are a cat owned by Gaster, the mysterious royal scientist who is heavily implied to be the one guiding the SOUL.
- Many people believed that FRIEND is actually Mike, a character who has been referenced by Spamton during Chapter 2. However, as revealed by the secret Mike Boss fight in Castle Town, FRIEND was never intended to be Mike.
- Some fans also believe that FRIEND is the identity of the Someone responsible for giving out the Shadow Crystals and causing Spamton and Jevil’s descent into madness.
- Due to the fact that FRIEND appears in the cat petterz mini game on Deltarune.com and the fact that its silhouette resembles a cat, fans believed that they are meant to resemble the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.
- During Chapter 4, when the Knight is about to open another dark fountain to summon a titan, they laugh at the lightners in their attempt to stop them. The laugh audio file that was used is the same as the one used for FRIEND.
- Fans believe that FRIEND will be the secret boss in either chapter 6 or 7, or might even be the main antagonist of a future chapter. Throughout the Sanctuary, there are prophecies that depict what happened and what will happen in each chapter. There are murals depicting Queen and Tenna, but there are ones that refer to Asgore, who is implied to be the one that will creating the dark fountain in chapter 5, and a mural with a strange symbol made up of circles with "They'll see the tail of hell take crawl" written above it. The circular imagery might be a reference to Cat Petterz 2, a game where all of the pets are circles, which FRIEND has appeared in. These observations has led fans to believe that the tail of hell is referencing FRIEND and that they will either be the main antagonist or secret boss of chapter 6 or 7.
- In addition to this, it's been speculated that FRIEND may play a role similar to the Devil of Deltarune's religion and the prophecy. This is because it is depicted as a black cat, which is an inversion of the Annoying Dog, the avatar of Toby Fox and functionally the game's "god".
- As an NPC states that “the children followed the pointed tail”and got “lost where the forest would grow”, it’s been theorised that FRIEND may have something to do with Dess’s disappearance, seeing as the shelter, a location heavily implied to be associated with her disappearance, is located deep in the woods. Additionally, Kris has an existing SAVE file in the Dark World, implying that they may have entered it with Dess before.
