“ | So you wish to challenge me? Branch Chief Faba? The man who is called Aether Paradise's last line of defense is to battle a mere child?! | „ |
~ Faba. |
“ | Faba: If Team Rainbow Rocket takes over Aether Paradise, the organization will grow far beyond where we are today... and more Pokémon will be saved! And If I can assist in doing so, no doubt my career will also reach new heights! Such a wonderful thought, don't you agree? Lillie: Mr. Faba... Did... did you...? Y-you wouldn't... Faba: Ah, as astute as ever, Miss Lillie! The same intuition that told you to rescue Cosmog still serves you well, I see. Yes, you guess correctly! I have taken it upon myself to facilitate Team Rainbow Rocket's takeover and ensure everything goes smoothly! |

~ Faba revealing his betrayal of the Aether Foundation to Team Rainbow Rocket to Lillie and the player. |
Faba is a major antagonist in the 2016 videogame Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, as well as the remakes and the secondary antagonist of the anime adaptation. He is the branch chief of the Aether Foundation and is one of their strongest trainers.
In the anime, he is voiced by Mitsuaki Madono in Japanese and by Daniel J. Edwards in English.
In the Games[]
Pokémon Sun/Pokémon Moon[]
Faba is first encountered at the Memorial Hills, where he and an Aether Foundation employee are found trying to defend a Slowpoke from two Team Skull grunts. When Faba notices the player, he asks them to defeat the grunts in his place. Once the grunts are defeated, Faba invites the player to the Hano Grand Hotel to talk.
Once the player completes their Akala Island challenge, the player heads to Hano Grand Hotel and meets Faba once again. Here, he introduces himself as the Aether Foundation branch chief. He invites the player to visit the Aether Paradise located at the middle of the Alola. He then takes the player and Hau there.
Faba then gives them a tour around the Aether Paradise. He explains that their goal is to create a safe haven for Pokémon to protect them from evil people such as Team Skull. As such, the Aether Paradise has a jamming signal that prevents Poke Balls from being used. He then introduces another branch chief, Wicke, and leaves the rest of the tour to her.
Later, the player, along with Hau and Gladion, returns to Aether Paradise in order to rescue Lillie. Gladion suggest searching the secret labs that reside in the basement, but realizes that a key is needed in order to make the lift go down. So instead they go up to the entrance, where they are confronted by Faba. Faba challenges the player to a battle. When he's defeated, he inserted the key that can allow the lift to go to the basement.
However, Faba knew that it would lead to a dead end, so he calls in reinforcement. After searching the basement, the trio return to the entrance, where they are ambushed by the Aether Foundation Employees. They later confront Faba again, this time with three Aether Foundation Employee. After defeating the first two, Faba and the remaining Aether employee battles the player, with Gladion battling alongside them. Faba was defeated a second time, and gives the trio a key needed to find Lillie.
After the player stops Lusamine and beats the Pokémon League, Faba can be found still in the Aether Paradise, where the player can battle him. It is revealed that due to his actions, he has been demoted, but he is currently working on redemption. Additionally, Faba can be fought as a challenger for the Alola Champion title.
Pokémon Ultra Sun/Pokémon Ultra Moon[]
Faba appears as normal in the remakes during the main story, working for Lusamine and trying to harness Cosmog's power. Since her motives are different in Pokémon Ultra Sun/Pokémon Ultra Moon than they are in the original, she eventually does regain her sense of reason (and doesn't go totally insane) whilst Faba is more vehement than ever to move himself up in his career.
After the player beats the game, a press conference is held in Aether as an Ultra Wormhole opens and a mysterious organization known as Team Rainbow Rocket storms the place and takes over. It is then revealed that Faba himself assembled the team of leaders from the franchise's past to move himself up in the world. After all the leaders are defeated, Faba is forever stripped of his title of Branch Chief and demoted to the lowly position of intern.
Pokémon Masters[]
Faba first appears in Pokémon Masters in the Alola-themed chapter of the game's second storyline, once again working behind his organization's back for his own benefit. After first being seen making a phone call a group of contractors, his meeting is interrupted by two grunts inquiring them about a recent data breach relating to intel on Ultra Beasts, to which Faba makes a sheepish excuse of calling Lusamine before fleeing the area. In a similar situation, Faba is next seen once again calling Team Rocket regarding their schemes on using Ultra Wormholes to gain resources, only to be interrupted once more by Gladion and Lillie. Confronted on the nature of the call, Faba at first tries to brush off the meeting as a private matter, only to be further grilled on his supposed secrecy regardless. Not wanting to hand over his Rotom Phone to the pair for them to investigate, he engages the two in battle, striving to protect his privacy from their heroic grasp. However, this attempt ultimately ends in Faba being defeated and forced to join the duo in walking to a facility, to which their allies are awaiting to confront them on some members of Team Aether's strange behavior. While Faba first attempts to lie once more on calling Lusamine, his fib is quickly revealed through Lusamine's testimony, to which stubbornly defends his innocence. However, this meeting is interrupted by a group of turncoat agents of Team Aether, managing to distract most of the heroes into venturing outward as Lusamine is left alone with Faba. As the grunts reveal their plan to eject Lusamine from the corporation to once more pursue Ultra Beasts, Faba reveals their agreement through their plans by accident, being scolded by one of Lusamine's allied grunts as such. However, when faced with the raging assault of the two teams of grunts and their Pokémon, Faba actually chooses to stand with Lusamine against the vicious horde, coming clean with his desires of finding a better job on the island with it. As such, Faba reveals that he was truly calling Pasio's royal family when making his suspicious calls, not wanting to reveal it in order to redeem himself in Lusamine's eyes. While Faba does admit his fickle mind is mainly desired by the jobs offered to him, he still stands behind Lusamine's ideals for the Aether Foundation, being disgusted with the treason attempted by some of its grunts. His alliance, alongside the arrival of Team Skull to aid their team, ultimately results in the defeat of the traitorous Team Aether grunts and their Team Rocket allies, with Guzma even managing to discover how to shut down the summoning of Ultra Wormholes through them. After the situation resolves itself, Faba meets up with Lear as he remarks on the prospect of aiding Pasio's royal family, although in the end, he chooses to stay with the Aether Foundation due to his alliance with them.
In the anime[]
Faba first appeared when he, along with Lusamine, Professor Burnet, and Wicke, investigated the Altar of the Sunne due to Ultra Aura being detected from that location, but they were unable to find anything. He later accompanied Lusamine and Professor Burnet to Professor Kukui's house on Melemele Island, so they could meet Ash and Nebby. He became upset with Lusamine when she entrusted Nebby to Ash, and for not letting the Aether Foundation take care of it instead.
He reappeared again where he followed Ash and his classmates' tour of Aether Paradise to learn more about Nebby. He became troubled when Lillie, normally terrified of Pokémon due to a childhood trauma, started making contact with them again. It is also revealed that he hired Team Rocket as Aether Foundation employees after taking a keen interest in their talking Meowth.
He appeared in a flashback, which was revealed that Lillie's fear of touching Pokémon was caused by her being attacked by a Nihilego that Faba summoned from an Ultra Wormhole.
Faba traveled to Gladion's hotel room, where he attacks and hypnotizes Gladion in order to steal his Type: Null. Later that day, Faba is approached by Lillie and Ash, who had traveled to Aether Paradise on a quest to remember how Lillie's trauma began. Worried that Lillie regaining her memories could put him in trouble, Faba attempted to erase her memories again. Faba is defeated when Gladion and Lusamine arrive after having found Type: Null. Faba attempted to attack them, only for Type: Null to evolve into Silvally and easily defeat Faba's team. Seeing Silvally allows Lillie to remember how her trauma began and overcome it. As Lillie celebrates being able to touch Pokémon again, Faba manages to sneak away as Silvally watches.
Faba later kidnaps Nebby while Ash's attention is elsewhere. When Ash and Lillie learn about this, they enlist Gladion and Lusamine in helping them rescue it. When the four find Faba, they find that he successfully forced Nebby to summon a Nihlego from an Ultra Wormhole. Nihilego proceeds to knock Faba away, forcing the others to battle it. Nihilego proves to be too powerful, forcing Lusamine to push Gladion out of the way to prevent him from getting captured by it. Lusamine is caught instead, allowing Nihilego to easily drag her into the Ultra Wormhole. In the next episode, when Faba is confronted by Wicke and Professor Burnet about Lusamine's capture, he desperately attempts to pin the blame for the incident on Lusamine herself.
After Lillie, Ash and their classmates, Gladion, and Nebby help rescue Lusamine from Nihilego's clutches, Faba attended the wedding of Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet. Later, he apologizes to Lillie and her classmates for his actions and reveals that he was demoted and made into Wicke's subordinate. Lusamine then asks the group to join the Ultra Guardians, a group dedicated to capturing the Ultra Beasts, which they accept.
Faba reappeared in "Dummy, You Shrunk The Kids", where he was invited as a guest speaker to teach at the Pokémon School about science. He shows off his new invention that can shrink objects which are placed in a Pokeball-like capsules. When he demonstrated it on a blackboard, the machine malfunctioned and its beam fired at a rapid pace until it finally hit Ash, Lillie and Sophocles who shrunk to 1 inch tall, which followed towards an accident that caused them to fly away from the school.
Meanwhile, Mallow, Lana and Kiawe went to look for their minuscule friends while Faba stayed behind in order to fix his machine with the help of Rotom-Dex. After Ash, Lillie and Sophocles grew back to their normal sizes, Faba showed off his machine once again, but this time Togedemaru grew in size.
In "The Shape Of Love To Come", Faba was seen with Wicke and Lusamine, when Ash, Professors Burnet, and Kukui contacted the Aether Foundation regarding Poipole's habit of pouring its emotions into its drawings. While Wicke thought it was romantic, Faba was disappointed it was not a scientific discovery.
In Filling the Light with Darkness!, mysterious dark clouds appeared over Alola, leaving all of the adults tired and without motivation. After doing some research, Faba, Lusamine, Wicke, and Burnet, found out that the cause of the incident was a small Ultra Wormhole that was slowly draining Alola's Ultra Aura. The Ultra Guardians were sent to the Altar of the Sunne, where, under Faba's instruction, the members with Z-Rings combined their Z-Power to fuel his machine that could disperse the clouds and reveal the hidden Ultra Wormhole. In the next episode, he and the others witnessed Lunala and Necrozma emerging from the wormhole. He was later seen arriving at Melemele Island, along with Lusamine, Wicke, and Burnet. While everyone was later watching Lunala recover in the Ultra Guardians base, Faba informed them of Team Rocket's Matori Matrix.
After the Ultra Guardians left for Ultra Space with a fully recovered Lunala in The Prism Between Light and Darkness!, Faba and Professor Kukui volunteered to aid them. On Ten Carat Hill, he and Kukui confronted the Matori Matrix by using their Pokémon to damage the team's airship and prevent them from entering the Ultra Wormhole. Afterwards, Faba and Kukui faced Gozu and his Mega Aggron in battle, but their Pokémon were swiftly beaten. In the next episode, Faba didn't own any more Pokémon, forcing Kukui to send out his Incineroar, who was able to defeat Mega Aggron with its Malicious Moonsault. Faba quickly figured out Kukui's secret identity upon noticing the resemblance between him and the Masked Royal, and revealed he was a big fan of the Masked Royal. He and Kukui then witnessed Tapu Koko attacking Team Rocket's airship, after which the team retreated. Faba later joined the rest of Alola in showering Necrozma with light so it could revert to its true form. After Necrozma had returned to its Ultra form, Faba watched as the Ultra Guardians, Nebby, and Lunala returned to Alola, alongside Kukui, Lusamine, Burnet, and Wicke.
In Turning the Other Mask!, Faba and James participated in a handshake event held by the Masked Royal. Later, the two headed backstage, hoping to get an autograph, only to discover Molayne preparing to change into the Masked Royal costume to cover for Kukui. Mistaking him for an impostor, Faba and James attacked Molayne and tied him up. When Mad Magmar appeared, demanding the Masked Royal face him in a rematch, Faba took on the Masked Royal persona and tried to battle him with Incineroar, only to be easily defeated. Later, after Mad Magmar had been defeated, Faba woke up in the bleachers and tried to resume the fight, only to discover that it was over, however, he then found out that the Masked Royal autographed his prized Masked Royal T-shirt, making him very happy.
In Don't Ignore the Small Stufful!, Faba encountered Team Rocket, who had secured jobs at the Aether Foundation thanks to Wicke. He was suspicious of them at first, but Wicke spoke up for them. Later, Faba discovered a list of potential Pokémon targets that Team Rocket had. He then realized that a Stufful was unaccounted for and alerted Wicke. They later found Stufful clinging to Jessie's hair, accused them of stealing Stufful, and didn't believe their excuses after they ran. Faba then watched as Bewear arrived to collect Team Rocket and was reunited with Stufful, who was its child, in the process.
In Chasing Memories, Creating Dreams!, Faba initially did not want to participate in the upcoming Alola League, due to preferring to be a spectator. However, he later expressed interest in the prospect and ultimately decided to join after learning that the winner would get to fight the Masked Royal.
He was among the 151 Trainers taking part in the Battle Royal preliminary round of the Manalo Conference in Battle Royal 151!, using his Alakazam. In the end, Faba was among the Trainers to progress to the Top 16. The matchups for the next round revealed that he would be battling Ash, prompting Faba to start thinking of a strategy to defeat him.
In the following episode, Faba faced off against Ash in the first match of the Manalo Conference, using his Hypno. Having spied on Ash the night before, Faba assumed Ash's Meltan was the weakest member of his team and had Hypno ensure that Ash had to battle with Meltan instead of Pikachu as Ash had originally intended. Despite this, Hypno was soon defeated, eliminating Faba from the competition. Faba then continued to make appearances throughout the Manalo Conference, watching the battles alongside Lusamine, Professor Burnet, and Wicke.
In Enter the Champion!, Faba attended the award ceremony for Ash's victory, only for it to be interrupted when three Guzzlord arrived at the stadium through wormholes. In Z-Move Showdown!, Faba helped monitor the situation while Ash, his classmates, Gladion, Hau, Kukui, and the island kahunas teamed up to defeat the Junkivore Pokémon and send them back to Ultra Space. Following the incident, he watched the exhibition match between Ash and Professor Kukui, enthusiastically cheering for the latter.
In Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, Faba bade farewell to Lusamine and her children when they left on their journey to find Mohn. He was later seen working at Aether Paradise alongside Wicke and Rotom.
In Helping the Hometown Hero!, Faba greeted Lusamine and her family on their return to Alola and was reunited with Mohn. The next day, he and Wicke acted as commentators during the Battle Royal match between Professor Kukui, Ash, Gladion, and Kiawe.
Trivia[]
- In the original Pokémon Sun/Pokémon Moon games, Faba was mostly considered a joke villain that was very goofy and was not a serious threat compared to Lusamine and was also mostly an idiot, due to allowing you to go through him with the key, which Hau points out. In the anime, however, Faba is a much more serious threat, and is made to be a scumbag even among other villains as he committed torture on Lillie so she would forget about everything, was responsible for Lillie's tragic past of her being abducted by Nihilego and also attempted to brainwash Gladion with Nihilego out of spite for being defeated. In the Pokémon Adventures manga, he was the one responsible for Mohn's disappearance because he had a crush on Lusamine. When she rejected him, he then went to take over Aether Paradise for revenge, then eventually tries to kill her. Being responsible for all of the chapter's primary conflicts, Faba is actually considered to be the main antagonist of it instead of Lusamine or Necrozma.
- This adaptational villainy is even made apparent in Pokémon Ultra Sun/Pokémon Ultra Moon, when he made an alliance with Team Rainbow Rocket and started a hostile takeover on Aether Foundation for the sake of furthering his career.
