Hear me, leaders of the Earth. All mutants held for any reason must be freed, and restitution paid for human crimes against them. Or we will begin attacking targets on Earth, commencing with Genosha. Let me warn you that resistance of any kind will result in your immediate destruction. You have four hours.
~ Cortez's message to Earth from Asteroid M, threatening to destroy the planet.
The Earth will be cleansed of infidels and the weak!
~ Cortez as he nearly sacrifices Jubilee to resurrect Apocalypse.

Fabian Cortez is the main antagonist of the episodes "Sanctuary" and "The Fifth Horseman" in X-Men: The Animated Series. A raving narcissist who faces a near-death experience after betraying and usurping Magneto on Asteroid M, Cortez later returns as a servant destined to resurrect his lord and savior Apocalypse.

He was voiced by Lawrence Bayne.

Biography[]

Fabian Cortez and his Acolytes first appear on Free Genosha, aiding Magneto in liberating their fellow mutants by recharging his powers as he slowly became more weak. Once on Asteroid M, Cortez is offended by Magneto welcoming human asteroids onboard as his guests, and then decides to take action by launching a nuclear warhead towards the Earth, provoking humanity into striking back with armed satellites. Magneto forced the satellites to retreat and then quickly discovered Cortez to be responsible for firing the warhead, nearly punishing him before being overcome by his weak physical state. Cortez then left the room and sealed the door shut, jettisoning him down to Earth and nearly killing him as the capsule burns upon reaching the atmosphere. Cortez then frames Magneto's presumed death on the X-Men, capturing and torturing Gambit in the process.

Later on, when the X-Men come to rescue Gambit from Cortez's custody on Asteroid M, Cortez gets his true backstabbing colors revealed when Amelia Voght shows video footage of him nearly killing Magneto to all the other mutants on the station. In retaliation, Cortez goes to the station's control room and launches 210 nuclear warheads towards Earth, apathetic towards the fact that it would kill most if not all of the people on the planet. Cortez then discovers Magneto to have been saved by the Earth's magnetic field, as he stops the missiles and then uses metal to bind him to the inside of Asteroid M, presumably killing him as the station explodes. However, it's then revealed that Cortez was miraculously saved from death by Apocalypse, who sought to use his talents for his own benefit in the near-future.

Before Apocalypse's death in the Axis of Time, he sent Cortez to wander the Earth and gather several mutants (including Caliban from the Morlocks) as his personal soldiers, before leading him to a failsafe temple in Peru to serve as the location of his rebirth. After failing to gather a new host body for Apocalypse's return in the form of a young mutant boy, Cortez's minions later stumble upon Beast and Jubilee hitchhiking in the country and bring the two X-Men to the temple after a brief scuffle. Cortez then uses his powers to turn Beast into a mindless feral, stating his intent to use the young Jubilee as Apocalypse's new host body, hoping to cleanse the world of infidels and the weak. The following night, Beast finally regains his senses and starts destroying Cortez's temple before returning to his normal self.

In the end, Beast, Jubilee and Caliban escape the temple with their lives as it starts crumbling down. Meanwhile, Apocalypse's astral form punishes Cortez for his incompetence by possessing his body as his new vessel while he feebly begs for forgiveness, effectively killing him as his entire consciousness gets sent somewhere into the void.
