Fad is a minor antagonist in the 1998 anime series Cowboy Bebop, serving as one of the two main antagonists (alongside Udai Taxim) in the episode Black Dog Serenade. He was a former member of the European Syndicate who became a cop in the ISSP. He was also the former partner of Jet Black.

He was voiced by Masashi Hirose in the Japanese version, and by Doug Lee in the English dub.

History[]

Fad used to be a member of the European Syndicate and a friend of Jet Black, until one day, he decided to work with Udai Taxim and would make a trap for Jet, where he shot him and made him lose his left arm. Since Jet didn't know who shot him due to search light that blinded him, Jet would leave the ISSP.

At least seven years later, Jet would meet Fad again due to the latter informing him about a riot in a prison ship where Udai was. Later, they would go to said ship due to Jet wanting to face Udai and get revenge for his arm. After they were able to kill most of the criminals that tried to kill them, Jet faces Udai, and the latter tries to tell him that he wasn't the one that took Jet's arm and that it was really Fad, but he was shot and killed by the latter before he could do it. Jet then turns his attention to his former partner and after some interrogation realizes the truth.

8 years ago prior to the main story of Cowboy Bebop, Jet Black was a dedicated and honest ISSP police officer with immense tenacity to catch criminals. Unfortunately, ISSP higher-ups were very corrupt who made lots of profits through backdoor dealing with underworld organizations. Jet's dignity and competence became an eyesore to ISSP superiors, and they feared that Jet would someday (sooner rather than later) find out their corruption. So they came to Fad who was Jet's partner, somehow managing to coerce the man into betraying Jet. The incident that made Jet losing an arm and leaving ISSP left Fad riddled with guilt, hinting that Fad had little to no choice in betraying Jet.

Fad then threatened to kill Jet, but the latter was able to get his gun and shoot the former. As Fad was dying from his wound, Jet discovered to his astonishment that there was no bullet left in Fad's gun and Fad's threat was a bluff. Then it became clear that even after many years Fad was still remorseful of his treachery. He came to Jet with only one bullet loaded which he used to kill Udai, and after killing Udai Fad intended to die at hands of Jet as his means of restitution. In his last moments, he asks Jet for a cigar and acknowledges that he wasn't truly able to quit smoking. He then dies from the injuries from Jet's gunshot wound.
