“ | Oh? Oh.. dear. I'm being quite indecent. I'll be your chef tonight. Falling Devil... is my name. I'm visiting tonight at the request of the residents of Hell. A word of warning - those who don't finish their food will taste death. | „ |
~ The Falling Devil's introducing herself. |
The Falling Devil is a major antagonist in the Academy Saga of Chainsaw Man, serving as the titular main antagonist of the Falling Devil arc. She is a devil that embodies the primal fear of both literal and metaphorical falls. Her earthly appearance is composed of mangled corpses, arranged to give the image of an otherworldly yet fancy chef.
Personality[]
Despite being a dangerous devil, the Falling Devil seems to have some level of politeness, being willing to spare innocents if just take "ingredients" from. Even towards her targets and foes, the Fallen Devil remains courteous to a fault, trying to convince Asa her incoming fall will be without pain should she let it occur. In addition, the devil speaks in a calm, reserved manner, and has human levels of decency, wearing clothes after noticing its originally nude form.
The Falling Devil is also unusually giving when it comes to other devils, going as far as to serve them a fancy meal atop of the hunter she sourced its components from. However, the Falling Devil is not immune towards the prospect of anger, growing increasingly annoyed with the heroes' rejection of being served to devils and killing her own diner after it threw up Denji and Asa.
Biography[]
Background[]
At an unknown point in the story, the Falling Devil was summoned to Earth by Fami to eliminate Asa Mitaka, ostensibly so that the Devils will get rid of both her and Yoru, the War Devil, but actually in an effort to starve them and Yoru enough to control them.
Falling Devil Arc[]
The Falling Devil first makes its appearance at the East District's Tamano Apartments, manipulating several occupants of the complex to jump from their balconies to their deaths. After being seen by the hero, she attempts to kill Asa, but Yoru takes control of her body to protect them. As the hero flees, the Falling Devil uses its victims' corpses to fashion a humanoid form for itself, stealing a chef's outfit in order to look more presentable.
Informing the populace of them being the "chef" for this occasion, the Falling Devil claps her hands one and utters the first "course" of the night, "Hors d'oeuvre, La Root Vonla". With this utterance, numerous people are sent soaring into the sky, being knocked into portals leading to Hell itself. While Asa joins these unnamed victims through her past trauma as an orphan, Yoru manages to restabilize Asa's mental state by tearing off one of her fingernails, allowing her to fall to the ground and the devil to take command of her. As Yoru and Asa discuss the nature of the Falling Devil's abilities, Asa's lingering fears of her companion cause the two to desync once more, sending her upwards for a small amount of time. As the two continue their argument of the other's nature, the Falling Devil is seen serving a dish named "De Root Atelanta" to a caterpillar-like devil, consisting of a soup made from a devil hunter's nose, ears, and tongue. After serving their macabre meal, the Falling Devil rises into the sky as she plots its next meal: "Asa Root Yoru".
To prepare her next dish, the Falling Devil takes to the streets, plucking out ten eyes and four ears before heading into a cornerstore. There, they steal several apples from the incapacitated store owner, allowing him to live due to him being too intimated to stop them. As they walk out of the store, the demon realizes the need of a severed head to complete their recipe, asking around the emptied streets for one. While this opening does allow two devil hunters to tear their form asunder using sniper rifles, the Falling Devil effortlessly reassembles themselves twice from the assault before lifting up her surroundings. Left disarmed from the attack, the Falling Devil decapitates one of the nearby hunters, completing her list of ingredients.
However, in response to the blatant theft that occurred earlier, Denji attacks the devil from behind. While Denji manages to shred at the Falling Devil's form and even take a bite from the chef, the Falling Devil attempts to disarm his attack by telling them that they only plan to kill Asa to complete her meal. This only results in Denji becoming even more incensed, charging at the demonic chef for trying to slay his "ex-potential girlfriend". While Denji is stalled for a moment by the devil giving a grim memory of his butchered allies, he stops her attempt by shredding away at his own brain, leaving the unaffected (if mentally handicapped) protagonist to try once more to devour his foe. This fails in spectacular fashion, as the Falling Devil's reformation temporarily splits the hero in two.
Floating to Asa's resting place, the Falling Devil turns to mind games after knocking Asa to the side, convincing them that the "fall" they grant is painless if Asa lets it occur. While this does leave Asa blissful towards the idea of death for a moment, Denji manages to snap her out of this funk through trying to enforce positive thoughts, resulting in the two just hovering in place. However, they don't remain in this state for long, as Asa's repulsion towards Denji's desire of intimacy sends them rocketing upwards once more. Having found themselves on a remarkably large plate after being thrust into Hell, Denji picks up a comatose Asa before trying to make his escape towards one of Hell's many doors. However, even after shrugging off the blows dealt by the same caterpillar-like devil from before, he is eventually stopped by the Falling Devil appearing through his desired escape route. While annoyed by the hero's refusal to surrender Asa to them, the Falling Devil refrains from fighting back as they are decapitated and impaled by a mysterious Chainsaw Man-like devil, warning of their fellow devils' plan to devour Asa if they wish to remain alive.
As the pair escape from the clutches of the caterpillar-like devil via motorcycle, the Falling Devil returns to Earth to impede their progress, telekinetically throwing an entire building towards the heroes. Instead of being crushed flat, however, Denji and Asa merely jet across the building's side, rushing towards the Falling Devil's insectoid peon. As the two fail to rush across the creature's gaping maw, the Falling Devil takes their chance to knock them into its mouth, finally serving the two to her "patron". Unbeknownst to them, however, Nauyta managed to manipulate the two's taste to that of fecal matter, causing what was intended to be culinary excellence to become horrendous in flavor. With all their hard work ending in the creature vomiting the two back up, the now furious demon makes her "customer" burst from the inside. After apologizing to Fami for her failure to serve the Asa and Yoru to the diner, they are then sent back to Hell by the horseman.
Trivia[]
- The Falling Devil is the second primal devil to appear in the series, after the Darkness Devil.
- Given Fujimoto's love of referencing movies in his works and him praising The Menu as one of his favorite films released in 2022, the Falling Devil's appearance and mannerisms are most likely inspired by Chef Julian Slowik.
