“ | The Falmer are twisted, evil creatures that dwell in Skyrim's deepest reaches. They have but one desire - to destroy the surface world, and any who dwell above. | „ |
~ Falmer's description on the Skyrim loading screen. |
The Falmer, formerly the Snow Elves, are major characters in the Elder Scrolls franchise.
They were once a race of elves with a wealthy and prosperous society, but were transformed into grotesque creatures living underground in caves, most notably Blackreach. Before they were transformed, they lived on the surface of Skyrim.
Description[]
The Falmer, after their downfall, have become twisted, evil creatures that only desire to destroy anything on the surface world, as stated on the loading screen. They went blind, always appear to be crouching down, and became hostile to anything other than each other and the Chaurus, a race of large insect-like creatures they domesticated which they use the chitin of to create their armor and weapons. The few Falmer that were not transformed appear to be tall, white elves. There are only two known Falmer who were not transformed, Arch-Curate Vyrthur and Knight-Paladin Gelebor.
History[]
Prior to their downfall, a war broke out between the Falmer and the Atmorans, a race of humans that came to Skyrim from Atmora. The Atmoran city of Saarthal was assaulted by the Falmer, but there are many reasons as to why. Not many escaped the attack, but there were two important figures who did, Ysgramor and Ahzidal. Ysgramor returned to Atmora to create an army, while Ahzidal studied the elven magic. Then, after several battles, the Falmer were defeated, however, even after the war, the Atmorans were slaying the Falmer anywhere they were found, so the Falmer had to flee. Most Falmer fled to the Dwemer, but most of the others died off. The Falmer that did flee to the Dwemer were forced to consume a toxic fungi, which over time, transformed them into the weak, blind, and mad creatures they are today. Now, they ambush, destroy, and mutilate anything from the surface, most notably the family from the Frostflow Lighthouse during the quest Frostflow Abyss.
