The False Monarch is a minor antagonist and optional boss in the 2019 role-playing video game Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. A cluster of Mothflies disguised as a masked royal, they have been luring travelers to the Ancient City for an unknown purpose.
Appearance[]
The False Monarch takes on the guise of a purple bug with a lavender cloak, with said cloak decorated in gold trimmings with a smiling face on its back. Their eyes are white and hollow, and their mouth takes on the form of a wide grin. They have two antenna and wear a golden crown on top of their head.
The False Monarch's true form is that of a bunch of Mothflies, small black bugs with yellow eyes and purple wings.
Biography[]
Long before the events of the game, a group of Mothflies gained the idea to cluster together to disguise themselves as a ruler and subjects, and took refuge inside the Ancient City, a temporary settlement whose inhabitants had long since abandoned. Neither how the Mothflies gained the idea nor how they managed to acquire the disguises is known, but thanks to their newfound form, they could conceivably pass as something other than lesser bugs.
According to Kabbu, the False Monarch has been luring adventurers into the Ancient City though the reason why is unexplained.
Should Team Snakemouth find themselves inside this barren wasteland, they encounter the Mothflies, disguised as mysterious masked bugs who speak in a language unknown to the rest of the world. Should the team press on into the heart of the town, they will discover a tent containing the False Monarch, who attacks the group of adventurers on sight.
After the False Monarch's defeat, the Mothflies that once made up the persona fly out into the air, leaving behind only their crown. The rest of the False Villagers disappear from the town as well, leaving behind only their masks, once more emptying the town of its inhabitants.
Bestiary Entries[]
“ | Comprised entirely of the most intelligent Mothflies banding together, this creepy being stands as ruler of a land everyone's already deserted. When defeated, the Mothflies disbanded, leaving the city truly abandoned once more. Regrettably, there was not enough time to conduct an investigation on the Mothflies' speech patterns and social hierarchy. | „ |

“ | It seems these critters are under a royal delusion. Enough to grow quite powerful. We must save some TP if we're to endure its strongest moves. | „ |

Trivia[]
- They were designed by Tyler "Polyhex" McBride as part of the game's Indiegogo campaign, specifically as a reward for the "Miniboss Bug" donation tier.
- A hidden note can be found if Team Snakemouth uses Vi's hover to jump off the roof of the inn of the Termite Capitol, detailing an adventurer who wants to learn more about the Mothflies before claiming to return by dinnertime. Considering that the apartment the note is located in is abandoned, and the note appears to be the latest thing written in the apartment, it's likely that the writer was killed by the False Monarch.
- While the Mothflies are capable of developing their own language, it is unintelligible to most bugs, leaving the motivations behind its actions unknown.
