Fang the Hunter, also known as Fang the Sniper, Nack the Weasel, or Jet the Jerboa, is a supporting antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He is also the titular main protagonist of his spin-off series of the IDW comics.
Across his many appearances, he is depicted as a greedy and mischievous criminal that seeks to obtain items like the Chaos Emeralds and works with other villains like Dr. Eggman for monetary gain, bringing him into conflict with Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies. He is the partner-turned-archenemy of Trip the Sungazer.
Biography[]
Sonic Triple Trouble[]
In Fang's first appearance, he serves as one of the game's three major antagonists alongside Dr. Eggman and Knuckles; however, Fang is not associated with either of them and serves as an independent villain looking for the Chaos Emeralds. He resides in the special stages, fighting Sonic or Tails several times throughout the game. Fang later appears near the end of the game in a manner that would make the player believe that he would be the final boss, before cowardly running away as Dr. Eggman reveals himself.
Sonic Generations[]
Fang can be seen on a "wanted" poster in City Escape. The poster lists his name as both Fang and Nack, and claims he is wanted for theft and extortion.
Sonic Mania[]
Fang, along with Bean and Bark, can be seen on various wanted posters throughout the Mirage Saloon Zone. Later, during the Act 2 boss fight, the Heavy Magician shape shifts into Fang, Bean and Bark in order to attack; in her Fang form, she bounces back and forth firing blasts from her popguns.
Sonic Superstars[]
Fang returns after years of absence in Sonic Superstars as the secondary antagonist of Story Mode and the main antagonist of Trip's Story. Fang is hired by Dr. Eggman to assist him on his endeavor on the Northstar Islands. When the both of them make it there, they split up, with Fang exploring a jungle on the archipelago. While there, he comes across a native to the island named Trip, whom he threatened to assist both him and Eggman.
Other games[]
Sonic Drift 2[]
Fang appears in Sonic Drift 2 as a playable racer. In this game, he is competing in the Chaos Grand Prix in order to win a Chaos Emerald and sell it for profit.
Sonic the Fighters[]
Fang is a playable fighter. Here, Fang steals a Chaos Emerald from one of its rightful guardians. After Dr. Eggman launches the Death Egg II, the heroes host a fighting tournament to see which of the eight guardians is worthy of taking Eggman down. Fang enters the tournament to defeat Eggman himself, for unknown reasons. If he wins, he travels to the Death Egg and destroys it, foiling Eggman's scheme.
Tails Adventure[]
Fang makes a minor appearance and can be found at Polly Mountain in a location that Tails' remote control robot can access. Once Fang is found, he gives the player the ability to make enemies lose the rings that they are carrying.
Personality[]
Fang is a slick, sneaky, and mischievous character who will steal the Emeralds for an easier job or to sell on the black market. He is also known for his massive ego and is prone boasting about his thieving abilities, and occasionally cruel with how he treated Trip throughout Superstars.
Other Media[]
Archie Comics[]
- Main article: Nack the Weasel (Archie Comics)
Sonic the Comic[]
In Sonic the Comic, Nack is a weasel who used to be a member of the Chaotix Crew, but betrayed them and sold them to the Brotherhood of Metallix for money. He reappeared sporadically throughout the comic, working solely for financial gain either through mercenary work or robbing banks/ancient treasures, and he battled the Chaotix twice. He was later instrumental in shrinking various characters (including himself and Sonic the Hedgehog) to sub-molecular size, initiating a string of adventures on the sub-molecular world of Shanazar.
Fang the Hunter[]
Issue 1[]
In the first issue, he tries to question Sonic about the eighth Chaos Emerald. Sonic doesn't believe him, insisting that there are actually seven chaos emeralds, and that he may be thinking of the Master Emerald instead. Afterwards, he and his gang travel to Angel Island to find Knuckles to assist them in finding it.
Bean, fed up with Fang's bumbling, criticizes him for his antics. Though Fang denies this, Bean also tells him of all of the times they've gotten in trouble with Sonic and his friends.

Trivia[]
- During the development of Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, Fang was originally known as "Knack"; however, due to this name sounding similar to Knuckles in the Japanese pronunciation, his name was changed. Despite this, he was still referred to as Nack the Weasel in the American and European versions of the game. All official games since have referred to him as Fang the Sniper; although external media, such as the Archie Comics, would keep his name as Nack the Weasel. As of Sonic Superstars, he is officially referred to as Fang the Hunter, with it being explained that his multiple names over the years are the result of him using different aliases while evading the law.
- Even though Fang is frequently described as a weasel, he is actually a jerboa.
- According to the Japanese manual of Sonic & Tails 2, Fang resides in the mysterious Subspace, described as another dimension and the setting of that game's Special Stage.
- In most media, unlike most other characters, Fang has 4 fingers instead of 5, as he is based on the four-toed jerboa.
- Starting with his appearance in the Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special, Fang is depicted with five fingers. The reason for this is likely to avoid comparisons to yubitsume, a Japanese ritual to amputate parts of one's own finger that is practiced by members of the Yakuza, a prominent Japanese criminal organization.
- Originally, Fang's signature weapon was going to be a realistic gun, but he eventually ended up with a cork-firing popgun in Sonic the Fighters after Sega axed the idea.
- In the character select of Sonic the Fighters, Fang's gloves are miscolored as white instead of brown in his icon.
- Originally Fang was supposed to be in Sonic X-treme as a boss. In several magazine screenshots Fang is shown to be unusually giant, similarly to Metal Sonic in the video game. According to the developers, this was to make it easier for players to hit him. Because the game was canceled, Fang never made an appearance in the game.
- Fang was a prominent figure in the classic era, as he has the most appearances of any side character from that era in Sonic.
