~ Faraday to Adam Smasher. |
Faraday is the main antagonist of the Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and a minor character in the Cyberpunk 2077: Gangs of Night City board game, functioning as David Martinez's arch-nemesis. He's a corpo fixer from Militech who's a recurring client for Maine's (and later David's) mercenary crew, usually using them as spies against the Arasaka corporation. Despite starting off as the contractor and "boss" of the Edgerunners, he soon ends up showing his true colors by betraying the crew in hopes of defecting to Arasaka.
He was voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue (who also voiced Kars in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency, Ginis in Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger, Ryūkotsusei in "Inuyasha", Emperor in Cyborg 009: Call of Justice and Goblin Lord in Goblin Slayer) in the Japanese version and Giancarlo Esposito (who also played Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Sidney Glass in Once Upon a Time, Tom Neville in Revolution, Hypnos in Monkeybone, Stan Edgar in The Boys, Frank Dawson in Okja, Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, Phantom Blot in the 2017 DuckTales cartoon, Lex Luthor in Harley Quinn, The Dentist in PAYDAY 2, Antón Castillo in Far Cry 6, and Lambert in Abigail) in the English dub.
Appearance[]
Faraday was a slim, middle-aged man with gray hair. He wore a burgundy Neokitsch suit with black trim and yellow accents, black gloves, black shoes, and a white button-down shirt. His most striking features were his four cybernetic eyes, three of which were installed on the right side of his face.
Biography[]
Background[]
Faraday was a ruthless fixer who worked for Militech. He was based in Santo Domingo and often hired Maine and his crew to conduct jobs that usually involve them performing corporate espionage against Arasaka.
Edgerunners[]
Faraday first meets David during a meeting with Maine, where he talks with the mercenary about their most recent gig involving the data theft of a limousine used by a high-ranking executive at Arasaka. While Maine argues that they were successful, Faraday rebuts by stating that not only did they get caught, but they also ended up stealing the car in the process, effectively rendering the navigation data useless.
After Maine's death during a firefight with Night City's Police, Trauma Team and MaxTac, Faraday began working with the former's protege David Martinez and the remnants of his crew to continue operations. Farraday's connection to Militech, Lucy and David, led Arasaka to hire thugs to assassinate him, which he narrowly escaped. This assassination attempt was actually part of a plan by Arasaka counter intelligence to manipulate Faraday into defecting to their corporation and so that they could use him as a toll to deal with Lucy and David.
Faraday would not guess Arasaka's intentions, despite fancying himself as a master manipulator and social climber. Spoken down to by his superior at Militech, Faraday would feel undervalued by Militech and endangered by Arasaka. Soon after, Faraday meet a representative from Arasaka counterintelligence, where he agreed to their terms of tracking down Lucyna Kushinada and collecting data on their new prototype exo-skeleton in exchange for his save defection to Arasaka alongside other benefits. He convinced Kiwi to betray her crew and set up a trap for Lucy, and then he sent David on a job without him knowing about Lucy's abduction.
Faraday tasked David with retrieving inventory from an Arasaka convoy, part of Faraday's plan to set a trap for David and earn the recognition of his new superiors at Arasaka. Faraday would use the captured Lucy to fake a call from her, with the fake Lucy encouraging David to don the prototype cyberskeleton. Lucy would escape Faraday's trap and contact David, but she was too late to stop David from donning the cyberskeleton. Faraday would then capture Lucy once again and then taunt David with his actions, sending David into a vengeful rage.
After this, Faraday would arrange for the death of his co-conspirator Kiwi, on Arasaka's orders. Kiwi would evade her assassins just long enough to have time to send Faraday's location to David, an act of both remorse and revenge. Kiwi would then be killed by a thug hired by Faraday.
Arriving by shuttle at Arasaka tower, Faraday would meet with his contact at Arasaka counterintel, who would express displeasure at the events unfolding, as the powered up David had caused unpredicted and immense casualties to Arasaka. While in a verbal dispute with his contact, the powered up and nearly cyberpsychotic David arrived. David used his new gravity weapon to crush Faraday's leg.
Adam Smasher then took most of David's attention as a conflict was imminent. However the vengeful David would not allow Faraday to escape, sending out an attack on the shuttle Trauma Team sent to recover him. Faraday would fall to his death from the top of Arasaka Tower, but not by the hands of David Martinez, but from the force of a missile launched by Adam Smasher which sent him headfirst out of the tower.
