Farmer Brown is a minor antagonist in the DC Animated Universe, serving as the main antagonist of The New Batman Adventures episode "Critters".

He is a farmer and scientist who longed to solve the issue of world hunger by altering animal hormones to enlarge them and provide more food for the Earth's population. Unfortunately, things went awry and Brown was banned from marketing his product after a disastrous presentation, leading the resentful farmer and his daughter Emmylou to get back at all Gothamites for ruining his planned business.

He was voiced by the late Peter Breck.

Having presumably dedicated himself to farming, agriculture and biology for most of his life, Enoch Brown lived in Gotham City with his beloved daughter Emmylou. It's unknown what happened to his wife and Emmylou's mother, but it's possible that she left him or passed away at some point for unknown reasons. That said, Enoch and Emmylou had a good relationship. Eventually, Enoch came up with the idea of enlarging farm animals through the manipulation of their hormones. Through this way, entire nations or families could have more than necessary to feed their mouths, and world hunger would be solved. To achieve his ambition, Brown invested his entire savings in his project, for which he referred to himself as Farmer Brown.

One day, during Gotham City's Agricultural ExpoOut, Enoch and Emmylou presented an enlarged ship to the attendees. Suddenly, the sheep grew irritated for having been put inside a cage and escaped, scaring the crowd and horrifying the Browns. Ultimately, Bruce Wayne was able to subdue the sheep by putting a curtain on its head and Enoch sedated it. Unfortunately, Enoch was arrested and tried, with the court banning him from continuing with his experiments and ordering his "monsters" to be removed from Gotham. Worried, Brown pled the judge to change his mind due to how much he had invested in the project, but the judge didn't relent. Furious, Enoch told Emmylou that they would show the Gothamites "real monsters".

The New Batman Adventures[]

In "Critters", one year after his failed presentation, Farmer Brown and Emmylou start sending giant animals, whom they raise inside a laboratory designed like a real farm, to roam Gotham City's streets in revenge. He first sends preying mantises that nearly devour a young boy, but Batman, Robin and Batgirl fortunately appear on scene to stop them, yet then the mantises disintegrate, which the Dark Knight quickly deduces to just be a warning of what Brown's animals can do.

Over the following days, Brown sends giant yet murderous farm animals like bulls, cows and a flock of chickens to terrorize Gotham City, though the Dynamic Trio makes sure to save all Gothamites. As Batman speaks about the case with Commissioner Gordon at the Gotham City Police Department, Brown sends a talking goat who demands fifty million dollars in exchange of not continuing to send the giant mantises, but this time without their genetic defect, to attack Gotham. Gordon apparently complies and asks Detective Harvey Bulock to deliver the money in a truck at the docks, where Emmylou is waiting for him in a boat and has Bullock thrown off the boat after he leaves the truck, but Bullock secretly grabs to a loosen rope and is taken to their lair.

Once at the laboratory, Emmylou discovers Bullock and takes him to Brown, who discovers that the dollars that Bullock delivered were fake and that Batman had left a tracker. Disgusted, Brown decides to send his mantises back and orders Emmylou to throw Bullock to be eaten by their giant pig. Fortunately, the Dynamic Trio arrives and saves Bullock, but Brown is able to put up a fight with Batman and forces him to surrender by threatening the lives of his sidekicks. He then has the three masked heroes and Bullock board his artificial farm's silo, which is actually a rocket containing a hive of giant mantises set to land on the Gotham Park Lake, so the mantis hive can devour all Gothamites.

Brown activates the rocket and leaves his laboratory with Emmylou by boat so they can watch from the ocean how Gotham City is devoured by their mutant bugs. However, Batman tricks a mantis who has just broken its cocoon into destroying the silo's door, which allows all four to escape and then Batman crashes the truck Bullock brought into the silo, causing the rocket to explode and destroy the laboratory in the process, sending debris that knocks Enoch and Emmylou into the water.

The Browns are then arrested and taken into custody by Bullock, who teases them that they will have to serve a ten or twenty years sentence and that they may look for a nice prison farm father and daughter can share. Unknown to everyone, however, a rooster crows at the remains of Brown's laboratory, suggesting that not all of his mutant animals have died.

Trivia[]

In The New Batman Adventures episode "The Ultimate Thrill", there's a blink-and-miss reference to Farmer Brown. As Batman pursues Roxy Rocket through one of Gotham City's tunnels, he crashes against a chicken truck that says "Farmer Brown". This was because Dan Riba received the "Critters" script while working on "The Ultimate Thrill", leading him to ask Darwyn Cooke to add a reference to Farmer Brown to foreshadow his appearance.
In retrospective, according to the DVD commentary of the Batman: The Animated Series, Volume Four DVD, Glen Murakami and Alan Burnett felt that rather than using Doctor Moon, they would have brought Farmer Brown back to replace Hugo Strange as one of Project Cadmus' heads. Whether Murakami and Burnett really meant it or said so in jest is unclear.
- That said, as Strange was precisly restricted from appearing due to the Bat-embargo as another version of the character was concurrently appearing in The Batman, it's unknown if Brown would have been able to return, as the embargo included almost all Batman characters whether from the source material or the DC Animated Universe, but given how Brown was such a minor and forgettable antagonist, it's likely he could have appeared rather than Moon.
Farmer Brown is one of the few DCAU villains to be original characters from their shows instead of being adapted from the source material.
