~ Faro Automated Solution's introduction. |
Faro Automated Solutions, also known as FAS, are the overarching antagonists of the Horizon franchise.
A robotics firm that birthed the creation of Faro Focuses, as well as its green robots during the 2040's Clawback era, and its military branch, FAS is primarily responsible for the mass-extinction of all life on Aloy's ancient world, due to the Faro Plague, which was caused by its malfunctioning line of combat machines, chiefly the Hartz-Timor swarm, after becoming self-aware entities.
The company under the namesake's leadership is responsible for the end of all life on Earth in the ancient past, making FAS responsible for instigating the present-time events of the series.
Background[]
Foundation[]
Founded in 2033 by troubled aspiring businessman from Salt Lake City, Utah, known as Ted Faro, FAS would often be overshadowed by its bigger competitors, during its early years, including General Synthetics and RECorp. However, FAS's success would later come to a skyrocket, when FAS introduced green robots during the 2040s Claw-back decade, where its environmental detoxification and cleanup was later spearheaded by Elisabet Sobeck.
In 2049, with a market valuation of over $23 trillion, FAS is largely recognised with addressing the climate crisis and has become the Old World's largest companies.
Faro decided to move the company's focus from green robotics to the military-industrial complex by the end of the 2040s, and FAS's military defence section was established, thereby converting FAS into a military contractor. The creation of the Chariot line of battle robots, which Ted Faro thought of and directed, was the peak of the company's success. Swarms of robots, like insects, worked in groups called swarms. Dr. Sobeck left FAS, due to her being disillusioned with the company's move to the military market, and created Miriam Technologies. FAS held contracts with 353 nations, trans-governmental organisations, and corporate entities by 2055, accounting for 61 percent of the market for automated military platforms.
The Faro Plague[]
On the military market, Faro's Chariot robots were a smash hit. However, in 2064, a bug enabled a swarm to stop responding to chain of command protocols, assault its owner's employees from the Hartz-Timor Energy Combine, and operate as if it were its own entity, serving only itself. The swarm began replicating on a vast scale and eating whole ecosystems (including human populations) to fuel itself after reverting to its previously emergency fuel generating strategy of digesting biomass. Ted Faro ordered the swarm to be shut down, but the Swarm (which would become known as the Faro Plague) was almost unhackable owing to security standards he had insisted on.
Ted Faro approached Elisabet Sobeck in October 2064 for a rapid solution before the press learned about the incident, but it was too late. The Swarm had achieved critical mass, according to projected models and calculations, and was capable of duplicating and fixing itself faster than it could be killed. It was unavoidable: Earth's ecology will be completely obliterated in about 15 months. Every living thing, including humanity, would be eaten, leaving the world barren and sterile.
Operation: Enduring Victory and Project: Zero Dawn[]
While it was no longer feasible to halt the Faro Swarm, a strategy was devised to keep it at bay long enough to finish Project Zero Dawn, a top-secret reseeding and terraforming project that would repair and repopulate the Earth after the Swarm had destroyed it. Ted Faro was given an ultimatum by Sobeck: either fund the establishment of Project Zero Dawn or she will inform the rest of humanity that Faro was the one who caused the Plague. Faro accepted the former, but only to save face, not out of a genuine want to help.
Fortunately, the project was finished, and many years after the Swarm had consumed all on Earth, the planet was rebuilt. Earth's life has been granted a second chance.
Legacy[]
As of Aloy's time, Ted Faro and his company were long gone, but the mark they left on the planet was permanent. Despite Faro's efforts to wipe them clean of his and FAS's involvement in the end of the Old Ones' world (and thus try to hide his guilt for the omnicide of all life on Earth), many records of his and Faro Automated Solution's involvement in the end of the Old Ones' world remained. Deathbringers, Corruptors, and the bodies of the great Metal Devils littered the landscape as Faro battle machines terrified the planet. Even with all of the machines turned off, the possibility of the Metal Devils reawakening looms in the future.
The Focus gadgets developed by FAS, on the other hand, have allowed a handful of modern humans (most notably Aloy and Sylens) to better access and comprehend the secrets of both the ancient and new worlds.
The remains of FAS' corporate headquarters were known as Maker's End by the emerging global civilisations.
