Father is the overarching antagonist of the 2002 film Equilibrium.
He is the founder of Libria, a totalitarian police state whose goal is to eradicate all the human emotions using a drug named "Prozium II". Despite having died years before the film's events, his identity is assumed by Vice-Counsel DuPont to put up the illusion that he is still alive.
He was portrayed by Sean Pertwee.
Biography[]
Following a Third World War, Father founded a city-state named Libria with the intention of eradicating all human emotions, as this was believed to be the root cause of all human conflict. The state was governed by the Tetragrammaton Council who was "led" by Father himself, and DuPont served as a high ranking official within the council. Father encouraged people to suppress their emotions by taking daily injections of a chemical known as Prozium, and any form of art, music or literature was illegal and incinerated on sight.
At some point, Father died of unknown circumstances. After his death, the Council elected DuPont as the new leader to continue his legacy. They also put the screens of Father everywhere to put up the illusion that he is still alive and in charge, but in truth it's all DuPont speaking while pretending to be Father's spokesman in public. Eventually, one particular cleric, John Preston, ceases his dose of Prozium after accidentally breaking a vial of it and begins to feel emotion himself. Realizing how bad Libria really is, he defects and joins the Underground resistance.
Later, Preston is taken to meet Father but discovers that DuPont is actually the current Father, and DuPont tells him the truth. DuPont and his right-hand man Andrew Brandt are later killed by Preston, who then destroys the command center that broadcasts Father's propaganda, and the Underground begin their revolution, destroying Father's legacy.
