Father Brigham, known as Father Meehan in the live-action film, is a minor antagonist from Stephen King's novel Needful Things as well as it's live-action adaption. He's a Catholic priest in Castle Rock most notable in the story for his conflict with Reverend Rose. He is one of the many Castle Rock civilians that were tricked into performing illegal acts by Leland Gaunt.
On the surface, Father Brigham is a devout priest dedicated to preaching catholic beliefs. This is demonstrated when talking to Sheriff Pangborn about what he believes the Devil might look like. However; in the story, he was shown to be no more devout than the common man, which is something that a priest is expected to be more than. Father Brigham, like many of the other citizens, was shown to be easily manipulated by the Devil (Gaunt)'s will, as he was able to exploit both Brigham's greed and vengeful tendancies. In the end, Brigham was able to overcome this, but not before almost killing Reverend Rose.
Biography[]
In the film, Father Brigham is first seen complaining about a threatening note that he received from Reverend Rose earlier that day regarding his religious practices. He read the note aloud to Pangborn and demanded that something be done. He is later seen sometime after this bumping into the Reverend at Gaunt's "Needful Things" shop.
Soon after this, he is seen giving a farewell to the deceased bodies of Nettie Cobb and Wilma Jerzyck. Reverend Rose came to do the same shortly after this, the two having overlapping dialogues. Father Brigham was again some time later slashing Hugh Preist's tires in order to pay for his Needful Thing.
Sheriff Pangborn came to Father Brigham at the end of the film in order to talk to him about Satan. After Pangborn explained that he believed that Gaunt might be the Devil himself, Brigham defended Gaunt and insisted that the only Devil in that town was the Reverend. The church then exploded (the explosion being caused by Danforth Keeton III), causing Father Brigham and the sheriff to fall to the ground. After running outside, a lightning bolt struck the top of his church and caused the debris fall on Father Brigham, almost burning his attire. Father Brigham is seen later on during the town's collective chaotic meltdown, fighting with the Reverend. After the two started fighting, Father Brigham got the upper-hand and attempted to kill Reverend Rose, but was stopped by Pangborn. Pangborn then brought everyone to their senses, causing them to admit to what they had done while under the influence of Gaunt. Father Brigham would admit to slashing Hugh Priests tires. He would also seemingly make amends with the Reverend, helping him up and helping him to get out of the way of another explosion caused by Dan.
