Father Friedstein is the main antagonist of the 2022 horror game Night At the Gates of Hell developed by Puppet Combo. He is a satanic priest that was once supposedly a normal priest, but one day suddenly turned evil and desired to bring the Apocalypse to the world by opening gates to Hell all over the world and raising the dead to create an army out of them using a book he found in order to cause even more destruction, eventually succeeding in his plan at the cost of his life.
He was voiced by Paul Hikari.
Biography[]
Before the events of the game, it was said that Friedstein seemed like a normal priest, but one day, he suddenly changed and an unknown citizen was afraid the Devil might have gotten to him as the only word he could think of when he saw his eyes was "evil". One day, Friedstein suddenly craved wanting to witness the world's destruction, so he convinced many others to start a satanic cult with him after he found a book that had the ability to raise the dead, with him and his cult performing multiple sacrifices in Friedstein's apartment until they finally found out the location where the gates to Hell could be opened, a remote island off the coast of the village the cult lived in.
After reaching said island, Friedstein can be heard in the introduction cutscene, saying "the first gate is opened, let the feast begin" after an unknown figure is hanged from a tree above a grave, which then leads to the death of a woman named Razor planning to have sex with a man named Liam near the church that Friedstein had raised the dead in. Liam manages to escape into the nearby church, and Friedstein decides to manipulate him by leaving a note telling him to "confess" inside the confessional booth and leaves a hint telling Liam to bring him a crucifix. Liam then brings him the crucifix and Friedstein gives him a key that allows him to open a door backstage, although it turns out there was a nun zombie behind the door and Liam is likely killed off screen.
Some time after this, Friedstein travelled back to the village with his new army of the dead and hell spawns in order to massacre it, killing countless innocents over the course of a few weeks or even months and even turning his own followers into zombies to use as extra firepower as seen throughout the game.
Friedstein is later seen momentarily after knocking David out and sending him to a nearby apartment. He is later seen outside a normal house with his hellhounds, who he then sets onto David in an attempt to murder him after praying and disappears. After almost the entire village had been wiped out, Friedstein decided to head back to his hideout on the remote island in order to open gates to Hell all over the world in order to ensure the Apocalypse.
He is seen one last time after David kills the Corpse Demon that guards Friedstein's private chambers. Upon noticing David entering the room, Friedstein tells him that he is too late as the gates to Hell cannot be closed and he has already succeeded in opening them all across the planet, in exchange for sacrificing his own life to do so due to a deal made with Satan. Friedstein is then either burnt to death due to the deal he made, or he just self immolates himself and is never seen again.
Personality[]
Not much is seen from Friedstein due to his minimal screen time, but he is shown to be a fiercely obsessed Satanist, committing several Satanic sacrifices in order to try and open the gates to Hell so he can bring the creatures from there into the real world and cause mass destruction, even being willing to die to ensure this would happen. He is also shown to be cataclysmic, wanting to cause the Apocalypse for a reason unknown, although it is likely that he just craves destruction and has no real motive as he reveals to David that he desires to watch the world wither and rot away. Despite this though, Friedstein also showed a level of charisma, being able to convince a good amount of people to join his cause and share his beliefs, despite being normal people before just like him.
