The congregation is the Israelites of the Old Testament. They are constantly switching from belief to disbelief, praising the Lord in times of plenty, cursing Him in times of famine. The town of Backwater has suffered from a long draught, the sky above them is like iron, the ground beneath them like bronze and they are living in a state of desperation. The minister offers them hope and they happily follow his God-fearing sermons. The minister is the true bad apple amongst them.
~ The Making of The Backwater Gospel's description of Fear of the Lord

The Fear of the Lord is the main antagonistic organization of the 2011 Danish short film The Backwater Gospel. It is a local religious sect led by both the town mayor and spiritual leader of Backwater, The Minister.

Everyone in the town except the Tramp followed this sect to cling upon the hope The Minister provided them through the latter's God fearing sermons during their darkest hour and fear of damnation, allowing him to convert them to the set's denominations under the promise of improvement in their lives and salvation. The utter lack of positive outlook on their lives coupled with hypocrisy towards their own believed was not only allowed the whole members of the sect to be easily manipulated by the Minister which ironically led to their grisly downfall.

Beliefs[]

They think they're living as proper Christians. They pride themselves of their fear of the LORD, but it is very evident to the tramp (and the viewer) that their belief is only hollow words.
~ The testament of Fear of the Lord's hypocrisy that earned them the very damnation they try to avoid.

As stated in Making of The Backwater Gospel, Fear of the Lord is based on Christian leanings, specifically Old Testament. The devotees of the sect would gather in the church at the hill near the town and the Minister would held a white cross on his hand during the preaching sessions. Although the sect encouraged its followers to both praise and fear God as with New Testaments and other Abrahamic beliefs, its teachings had since corrupted by The Minister to suit his needs. To add insult to injury, the manner The Minister conducting his sermons involves Preaching Fire and Brimstone Preaching tactics that is surely frowned by both God and more sensible religious figures.

Biography[]

The sect was founded and led by The Minister at some point prior to the events of the film. He has converted the whole town’s population (who mostly Israelites) to join the sect to improve their miserable life except the Tramp, the happy-go lucky but actually wise crippled man whom have more positive outlook in his life that the rest of the town in spite of not sharing the same faith faith. How he easily mislead everyone except Tramp to join the sect was due to both their fear of death and damnation as well as fear that Minister won’t aid them for salvation by God, in which they followed the Minister blindly without thinking about themselves. Because of it, they led their lives in fear, resulting the atmosphere of the town become gloomy and have no sign of happiness except from Tramp.

The sect members' true colors as paranoid citizens whom feared death began to unveil itself when The Undertaker comes to the town. The Tramp, whom had positive outlook of life on spite of not share the same faith with the rest of the town's inhabitants, interrupted the sect's daily sermons by warned the church. To his amusement and prediction, the whole sect except The Minister become panic and flee to their homes.
