Secretary of Development Felipe Buencamino (full name: Felipe Buencamino y Siojo) is one of the four main antagonists (alongside Emilio Aguinaldo, Arthur MacArthur Jr., and Elwell Otis) of the 2015 Filipino epic war film Heneral Luna and one of the overarching antagonists of its 2018 sequel Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral.
He's the First Philippine Republic's Secretary of Development who, by informing President Aguinaldo of Heneral Antonio Luna's nonexistent plans to overthrow him, inadvertently caused the titular general's death.
He was portrayed by Filipino character actor, Nonie Buencamino.
History[]
The Secretary's first mentioned when, in the heat of battle, Heneral Luna questions a fleeing deserter, asking him, "Are you Buencamino's son?," attempting to make the deserter fight alongside his compatriots. Nevertheless, the soldier manages to flee, prompting the titular general to shoot him non-fatally.
Buencamino's introduced around the film's 48-minute mark, at a Presidential Cabinet meeting. It's here where he informs Aguinaldo, as well as the rest of the meeting's participants, of the Schurman Commission's plans to: discuss the conditions of surrender with them and make the Philippines an American protectorate, supposedly ensuring the country's economic stability.
Luna, seeing this action as a sign of unpatriotism, accuses the Secretary of being a traitorous coward for even considering the possibility of negotiating with the Americans; he even brings up the topic of Buencamino's son fleeing from battle. Their argument turns physical, with the two slapping and hurling insults at each other. Buencamino even likens Luna to his brother and fellow national hero, Juan Luna, who murdered both his wife and mother-in-law, calling him a lunatic. Eventually, Aguinaldo gets tired of their insolence, scolding the two for daring to fight in front of everyone else. Buencamino and Luna's interaction ends with the General ordering the Secretary's arrest.
