And anyone can afford them. Even the...
~ Mr. Fickelgruber expressing his concerns about Willy Wonka's business to the Chief-of-Police.

Felix Fickelgruber is one of the three main antagonists (Alongside Arthur Slugworth and Gerald Prodnose) in the 2023 musical fantasy film Wonka, which serves as a prequel to Roald Dahl's 1964 classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a "companion piece" to the 1971 musical fantasy film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

He is a renowned corrupt candymaker and one of the three commanders of The Chocolate Cartel, alongside his fellow rivals Arthur Slugworth and Gerald Prodnose, who particularly despises the poor to the point of gagging when mentioning them. However, Fickelgruber grows jealous at the successes the younger Willy Wonka has with his culinary creativity, leading him to conspire alongside his fellow cartel leaders against Wonka to steal his recipes and drive him out of the chocolate making business. Becoming one of Wonka's arch-rivals.

He was portrayed by Mathew Baynton who has portrayed various evil people in history in the show Horrible Histories such as Dick Turpin and Elagabalus.

Biography[]

Before the events of Wonka[]

Mr. Felix Fickelgruber grew to become one of the most famous chocolatiers in the galerías gourmet with vast wealth and joined the Chocolate Cartel with his rivals Arthur Slugworth and Gerald Prodnose where they blackmail anyone with chocolate to get out of trouble.

Fickelgruber and the other cartel members store and captivate their chocolate in a large reserve under a cathedral run by the corrupt Father Julius and his "chocoholic" monks.

During the events of Wonka[]

Mr. Fickelgruber is first seen watching Willy Wonka demonstrate his "hoverchoc". Confused by the flying chocolate, Mr. Fickelgruber heads down outside with the other cartel members to test-taste the hoverchoc. Mr. Fickelgruber (along with Slugworth and Prodnose) mocks the chocolate, but regrets doing so when the hoverchoc takes effect and makes the cartel members fly uncontrollably. The Chocolate Cartel members vow to get revenge on Wonka.

The Chocolate Cartel is later seen in their cathedral based headquarters, where they blackmail the Chief-of-Police into doing anything he can into arresting Wonka by exploiting the chiefs obsessive love of chocolate.

Fickelgruber and the other cartel members are later seen demanding the chief to get rid of Wonka, only for the chief to reveal that Wonka and his friends are living at Scrubbits' which infuriates Slugworth as Scrubbits is the same exact location where Arthur abandoned his niece Noodle and comes up with a plan to have Mrs. Scrubbit and Bleacher taint Wonka's candy and get him arrested.

After Wonka's store is burned down by angry customers as a result of the tainted chocolates, Fickelgruber and the Cartel approach Wonka with an offer to pay off everyone's debt to Scrubbit in return that he leaves town and stops making chocolate forever. After he accepts the deal they send Wonka on a boat which they loaded with dynamite, and exploded after leaving the docks, terrorizing the town in the act.

Fickelgruber and the cartel head to the cathedral where they catch Wonka and Noddle in the act of taking the ledger as Slugworth holds the two of them at gunpoint.

Fickelgruber then kidnaps and false imprisons the two in chocolate reserve planning to drown them in chocolate and then mocked them for the fact that they’re about to drown, then took Wonkas Hover-Chocs which where meant for Lofty the Oompa Loompa, and alongside Prodnose and Slugworth ate them all before leaving the church.

As Fickelgruber and the Cartel begin to leave the Cathedral, Wonka and Noddle having escaped turn in the ledger to Officer Affable as the Chief-of-Police tries to confiscate the ledger only for them to be exposed through the ledger which shows numerous payments the Cartel had made to him. With the Chief-of-Police arrested, Fickelgruber and the Cartel attempt to make a run for it only for the three of them to slowly hover up due to the effects of the Hover-Chocs. Holding onto the town fountain, Slugworth states that he will simply buy his way out of the justice system whether it be through lawyers or bribing the court officials as Noodle turns a valve causing the Cartel's entire chocolate reserve to flow through the fountain causing Fickelgruber to lose his grip as the Cartel is launched into the air.

When asked if they will ever float down, Wonka states that Hover-Chocs usually last a few minutes. However, due to the Cartel having eating the entire jar, he is unsure how long they will be hovering.

Personality[]

Fickelgruber is shown to be the most elitistic member of the Chocolate Cartel, as he often mocks the poor and dislikes them so much that he cannot stand hearing the word without vomiting on the spot.

Aside from that, not much is known about his personality. Much like his business partners, he’s very corrupt and quite greedy, as shown when he tries to sabotage the business of Wonka along with his partners in order to ensure that they are the only chocolate factory in town. Along with Slugworth and Prodnose, he often blackmails and bribes people to get away with his crimes. He clearly doesn’t seem to care for others, with the exception of his business partners. Fickelgruber has even been shown to be very stingy, as he likes to make sure that the prices of their candy is so high so that the poor can’t afford them. His reason for this is unknown, because while he can’t stand the term poor, it’s unknown as to why. Perhaps the reason for this is because of his ego and status, as he views himself above those he considers to be “poor.” Because of this, it’s possible that he may also pay his employees a low wage as well.

Appearance[]

Fickelgruber is a slender gentleman with fair skin, dark brown hair, a small mustache, and brown eyes. He wears a dark greyish-green business suit, a white collared undershirt, a dark green necktie, a purple satin handkerchief in his breast pocket, a golden Chocolate Cartel pin on the left collar of his blazer, and black flat-heeled shoes. When out and about, he wears a dark green fedora and overcoat with a darker green collar, and chocolate brown leather gloves and carries a cane.

Trivia[]

  • While Wonka appears to be a prequel to the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory film adaptation, Mr. Fickelgruber is last seen floating up to his presumed death unless the effects of the chocolate passed and he was arrested, which means that either way, he couldn't have sent spies to steal Willy Wonka's secrets later on in his career.
    • That said, there's a possibility that his company kept his name after his death/imprisonment and his successors were loyal to him to the point of sabotaging Wonka to avenge their predecessor.
  • The text in Fickelgruber's shop says "Feinste Schokolade", which is German for "Finest Chocolate".
  • Assuming the main four members serve as parallels to the four bratty kids , it’s possible that Mr. Fickelgruber serves as a parallel to Veruca Salt, one of the Four Bratty Kids of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: both are classist and greedy opportunists who look down on the poor and prefer to have others do the hard work for their goals.
