Dr. Felix Reed is the main antagonist of the 2017 novel Psycho Sanitarium, the fourth installment in the Psycho book series.

He is the psychiatrist of Norman Bates during his stay in the mental institute following the events of the 1959 novel Psycho.

Biography[]

In 1960, following Norman being incarcerated at the asylum for the murders he committed as "Mother" during the Psycho novel, Dr. Felix Reed is appointed as his doctor. He tries to bring Norman out of his catatonic state and make him interact with patients and other members of staff in the facility. He grows close to Norman, with Norman seeing him as a friend and ally in the institute. Reed also introduces Norman to his long-lost twin brother Robert Newman, who Norman's mother Norma apparently abandoned at birth. Dr. Reed wishes to keep the meetings a secret. During his time treating Norman, members of staff in the asylum end up going missing (having been killed). These people are sadistic and cruel, and liked bringing harm to the patients in the institute.

Dr. Reed is later revealed to be the mastermind behind the killings and disappearances. Using hypnosis, he caused Norman to develop a second split personality which was Robert Newman, his made up brother. He then used "Robert" to kill off the sadistic staff members, in hopes of bringing compassion to the facility and more up to date rather than resorting to "medieval" means to help cure the patients, such as electric shock therapy. Dr. Reed and Felix used secret passages hidden within the asylum in order to gain access to the victims, and then hid their cocooned bodies away in a secret room, with their disappearances being put down to them fleeing. Despite Dr. Reed manipulating Norman, he is shown to care for him and helped shield Norman from having any harm brought to him, and only took advantage of his mental state because Dr. Reed was unable to kill another human being.

When a nurse named Marie became suspicious of Norman, Dr. Reed decided to have her killed, in the hope it would finally allow them to move on and improve the asylum. But Norman, with the help of his "Mother" persona (which he suppressed throughout most of the novel), managed to get rid of the Robert persona. When Dr. Reed took Norman to a secret room to get geared up and prepared for killing Marie, he was shocked when Norman slipped into his "Mother" personality. "Mother" accused Dr. Reed of taking advantage of Norman. Despite his pleas that he was trying to help, "Mother" ended up stabbing Dr. Reed to death by plunging a knife into his face repeatedly. Dr. Reed's body was hidden among "Robert's" other victims. Norman got off with his disappearance as it was believed Dr. Reed had also fled. Norman slipped into a catatonic state once again due to the trauma, although Dr. Reed's wish for a better system was met when the new superior of the asylum Dr. Steiner began making improvements on dealing with patients and bringing compassion.
