Synopsis

The story of Felonious Gru from the Despicable Me franchise.

Past[]

Born in the family with long line of villainy, ever since Gru was young, he tried to impress his aloof mother with his inventions to no avail (even after building a highly successful rocket, his mother is still not impressed, only to disgrace and nullify him abusively). This neglectful treatment from his mother is what led him to become a villain in the first place and fly to the moon so that he could take it for himself. He was unaware of his father Robert - a legendary supervillain - and his twin brother Dru's existence.

Minions[]

In the 2015 prequel, Gru first appeared as a young kid attending the 1968's Villain Con with his mother, observing Dr. Nefario's Freeze Ray. He appears again near the very end freezing Scarlet Overkill and Herb Overkill with the Freeze Ray. With that, he takes the crown from Scarlet and refuses to give it back to her. Kevin (the leader of the Minions) discovers that he has found a new master, so he and the rest of the Minions followed him, leaving Scarlet and Herb in the iceberg. Since then, the minions begin working for him. During the credits, Gru becomes a little annoyed with the Minions, but starts to accept them as his friends.

He reappears in the after-credits scene where he dances with the rest of the characters until they are scared off by an arriving Tyrannosaurus Rex. Gru didn't notice until the T-Rex roars at him and tries to use his freeze ray to stop it. However, the freeze rays shortens on power, leaving Gru to chuckle nervously as he is now at the mercy of the tyrannosaurus. It is unknown what happened to him afterward.

Minions: The Rise of Gru[]

Some time after the events of Minions, Gru now lives a fairly normal schoolchild's life, being accompanied with his Minions to get up to all sorts of mischief. One day, Gru comes back home to find that his audition request to join the Vicious Six, a famed supervillain gang, has been accepted and thus, goes to their base of operations which he is ushered into by a young Dr. Nefario. He eagerly shows up to the villains but to his disappointment, Gru is rejected by the gang's leader Belle Bottom who looks down on his young age and insists he leave.

Angered by this, Gru swipes a mysterious amulet from under the gang's noses and leaves. Noticing the amulet, Dr. Nefario tries to help Gru escape undetected but the Vicious Six quickly catch on and pursue him, forcing Gru to hand the amulet to his minions while he outruns the supervillains. Gru successfully evades the Vicious Six and returns to his basement-turned-villain-lair, announcing to his minions that he will use the amulet as ransom for a spot in the team. However, he quickly learns that the minion he passed the amulet to, Otto, traded it off for a pet rock. Losing trust in his minions and outraged at Otto's incompetence, Gru fires them and leaves to search for the amulet alone. The minions attempt to persuade him against this but he declines as he wishes to go solo. However, just as Gru walks down the sidewalk a burly man emerges from a van and stuffs him in a sack, kidnapping the young boy.

When Gru wakes up, he is brought before the former leader of the Vicious 6, Wild Knuckles, and held for ransom for the Zodiac Stone, but after some time in Knuckles' death trap, Gru begins to bond with his idol after saving him from a gang of crocodiles (and after his Henchman quit) and together they steal the Mona Lisa from a secret villain-only location called the Bank of Evil.

However, in the process, the Vicious 6 are enraged at being robbed by a "fat-little-bug" and they go on a destructive search for Gru and the stone, destroying Knuckles' house, when Knuckles learns of this, he sadly tells Gru to go home, however during during the Chinese New Year parade, he and Otto reunite with the stone, but are ambushed by the Vicious 6, who are then attacked by a special organization called the Anti-Villain League.

Unfortunately, as the clock strikes midnight, Belle activates the stone's power and transforms herself and her teammates into giant zodiac animals, and Belle, still angry about the theft, pins Gru to the clock and as Kevin, Bob, and Stuart arrive to save him. Belle humorously transforms them into smaller zodiac animals. Suddenly, Wild Knuckles confronts his former teammates, and with the help of his minions, he manages to get the stone back from Belle, but is badly burned in the process.

Once Gru is freed, the 5 villains try to pounce on him, but the Kung Fu trained minions named Chow blast the villain and Gru, noticing that the rock just fell from Belle's neck, grabs him. and uses it to turn the villains into rats, and happily hires them again, impressed by the minions' new abilities.

Afterwards, AVL takes the villains away and confiscates the Zodiac Stone, but Gru finds Knuckles badly injured and taken to the hospital, after which Gru comes to his funeral and admits that what he learned from him is that even villains need help. . However, Knuckles is revealed to have faked his death and after reuniting with Gru and the minions, they hide in a van and happily drive away.

Later, Gru reunites with Dr. Nefario and asks him to work for him, while he initially refuses, after pleading from him and the minions, he eventually changes his mind, and then Nefario shows Gru his newest vehicle: a giant rocket drive. jets, and Gru and his newly formed organization fly off into the sunset. Now with his army of yellow henchmen and a mad scientist assistant, Gru is fully confident and builds a bridge to his future in the first Despicable Me.

Despicable Me[]

In the first film, Gru serves as the main protagonist, With the assistance from the Minions and the elderly Dr. Nefario (who supplies weapons for him), Gru became the number-one greatest villain of all time before being replaced by Vector Perkins, who managed to steal the Great Pyramid of Giza. In order to get his title back and impress his mother, Gru plans to steal the moon by using a shrink ray that he stole from an East Asian facility in order to receive a bank loan to build a rocket.

He later adopts three girls named Margo, Edith, and Agnes, using them to retrieve the shrink ray Vector stole from him, so he can use it to shrink the moon. However, when he goes to the carnival with the girls, he soon decided to change his ways and becomes a loving father to them. Despite getting the shrink ray in his possession, Gru is upset to learn that his bank manager Mr. Perkins won't fund a loan for a rocket, as Mr. Perkins wants his son (who turns out to be Vector) to do the job of stealing the moon himself. Despite the setback, Gru was cheered up by the girls and Minions (who gave him their allowances to fund for the plan), and they all pitched up to help Gru successfully create a rocket out of parts from Gru's lair.

Just as Gru finally completed his goal in shrinking and stealing the moon, he attempts to attend the girls' ballet recital, only to find out that Vector has kidnapped them and held them hostage in his lair, demanding for the moon in exchange for them, since Vector planned to claim the moon for himself and remain the number-one villain that he is. Deciding that the girls are more important than his career as a villain, Gru instantly commits to the exchange, but Vector reneges on the deal, taking both the moon and the girls for himself in his escape pod. Infuriated by this, Gru arranges himself, Dr. Nefario, and the minions to launch a rescue for the girls, and at the same time, Dr. Nefario reveals that the effects of the shrink ray are temporary and that the object will instantly return back to its original size based on its mass. Gru then realizes in shock that the moon will revert back to its normal size anytime now.

Taking action, Gru, Nefario, and the Minions manage to save the girls while the moon starts to grow, causing Vector's ship to go into hyper-jump, where it reverts back to its normal size on its orbit, destroying Vector's ship and leaving Vector stranded on its surface with a space helmet. Having defeated Vector for good, Gru gave up his villain ways and he, his mother, Dr. Nefario, and the Minions celebrate as the girls perform their recital for them. During the celebration, Gru's mother finally acknowledges her son of his success, declaring him to be a better parent than she is, much to his delight.

Home Makeover[]

Gru makes a short cameo in the DVD released short Home Makeover where he was out of the house and the orphanage sent an inspector to examine how suitable Gru's house is for children. Margo, Edith and Agnes completely redecorate the interior of the house by disguising Gru's sharp-thorned/needle-pricked weapons and other violent themed objects to look like harmless props for young children. One minion standing on top of Margo was disguised as Gru while the inspector observes Gru's house. When the inspector was about to leave, Gru saw Margo and the minion disguised as him, then the minion runs away screaming which scares the inspector so much that he faints into Gru's arms. Gru sees the inspector's clipboard say, "Suitable for children" and he is delighted, but when looking only a few seconds at his redecorated house, he faints as well. However, Agnes mistakes this as him fainting from liking it.

Despicable Me 2[]

In the sequel, Gru is now running a jelly business with the help from the Minions, but is saddened to see Nefario leaving because of the latter's desire to do evil despite their previous success. Eventually, Gru is recruited to the Anti-Villain League (or AVL for short) to help them fight a new villain named El Macho due to his knowledge on villains. Teaming up with AVL agent Lucy Wilde, Gru helps set up a cupcake bakery at local mall to find clues while developing a relationship with Lucy.

During the Cinco de Mayo celebration, Gru finds out that the local Mexican restaurant owner Eduardo Perez is actually El Macho and that Nefario is currently working for him. Gru is even horrified to learn that El Macho and Nefario have kidnapped many of the Minions and mutated them with a stolen mutagen called PX-41, turning them into purple savage hairy monsters, and that El Macho plans to send numerous rockets containing the mutated Minions to major cities around the world to achieve world domination.

Having learned about Gru's previous success of stealing the moon, El Macho offers Gru a team-up, but Gru politely refuses and leaves, prompting El Macho to send a mutated Minion named Kevin to go after him. Gru enraged upon learning Margo has been dumped by her boyfriend Antonio Perez, who is El Macho's son and ends up being encased in ice by Gru for breaking Margo's heart.

When Lucy arrives to attend the Cinco de Mayo celebration, El Macho (being aware that she's working for the AVL) kidnaps her and takes her hostage. Witnessing this and realizing his mistake, Nefario quits El Macho's employ and rejoins Gru's team, secretly informing Gru that El Macho's on to him and Lucy has been taken hostage. As Gru heads off to El Macho's lair to rescue Lucy, Nefario creates an antidote for the PX-41 and mixes it with Gru's jelly to help turn all the mutated Minions (including Kevin) back to normal. Gru and El Macho (who mutates himself into a huge furry monster after drinking the mutagen) engage into a fight, which ends when Gru uses Lucy's Lipstick-Taser to defeat him. He then rescues Lucy from being sent into a volcano on a rocket (fired by El Macho's pet chicken El Pollito) before successfully asking her out on a date.

Following 147 dates, Gru marries Lucy and the girls are happy to have a mother. The Minions close with a rendition of "I Swear" and "Y.M.C.A." as the whole family celebrates.

Despicable Me 3[]

In Despicable Me 3, Gru becomes an agent for the Anti-Villain League. When Balthazar Bratt steals a huge gem, Dumont Diamond, from a ship and is about to flee, Gru and his wife with two minions arrive with their personal submarines to pursue Bratt, which change into water scooters when going out of the water. Lucy then blows a water column throwing Gru to the ship - which is now floating away because of the expanding chewing gum that Bratt threw.

Gru at first tries to shoot Balthazar but he soon finds out his gun is replaced with a water gun (presumably done from his daughters); then, he fights against a dancing Balthazar. Due to Balthazar's carelessness, Gru knocks him out and gets the gem; yet, Balthazar activates his keytar and the shockwave of the tune blows away Gru's clothes and then throws him out of the ship. A broken bubble from Balthazar's gum hangs Gru in the front of the ship, but the floating boat brings the naked Gru in front of a birthday party held in a skyscraper. Seeing this, Gru embarrassingly sings the birthday song to the party participants, which make the people inside amused and even take photos of his ridiculous appearance.

After the failed mission, Gru, in his Grumobile, crashes a car with whose drive provokes him when he mutters about considering to take revenge on Bratt by dancing. The couple then enter a house and ascend to a base of AVL in the sky by a secret mechanic system inside. They enter a huge auditorium where numerous agents gather, in the middle, Silas Ramsbottom announces his retirement and his position will be replaced by Valerie Da Vinci immediately, and impatient Valerie soon pushes him down under the podium. After he's gone, Valerie furiously questions which agent failed to capture Bratt, who is the criminal AVL has been long for to catch. Gru answers, and Valerie decides to fire him, while Lucy defends for her husband, stating that she should be fired as well and doubting Valerie won't want to do so. Eventually, Gru and Lucy are thrown out from the aircraft with their items.

When they return home, their daughters give them a surprise party for their honeymoon in the way of "kidnapping" them. The party takes place in a tree house in Hawaiian style, with Dave and Jerry amusing them with drum playing. Agnes prepares a mixed soup with a gummy bear inside, which both Gru and Lucy almost barf when having some. When the girls ask them about their work, Gru admits that he lost his agent job and he'll find another one.

One of the Minions, Mel, gives a call to Gru, so Gru goes down to the lab. There, the Minions, already know the news that Gru is no longer an agent, excitedly persuade Gru to go back to villainy. Gru doesn't want to, and Mel projects a slide about a collection of Gru's past featuring his villainous acts and embarrassing scenes of being a father. Gru, however, still doesn't change his mind, so the Minions decide to leave him, except Dave and Jerry, who just came back from the Hawaiian party.

The next day, Gru knows the news that Bratt got the diamond from the newspapers, and he sees Agnes selling some items for maintaining their life, including her beloved Unicorn Plush, which Gru is quite surprised and little bit sorrowful when it comes to his joblessness. Fritz shows up at the lawn asking for Gru, and Gru tricks him to hold a rocket so he flies away with it and it explodes seconds later; however, Fritz returns, telling Gru that he has a twin brother named Dru Gru and the news about his father, Robert. Gru isn't convinced at all, because he believes his father has been dead for years, but he becomes puzzled when Fritz gives him a photo of his parents and two infants taken in 1960s. Gru goes to his mother, who is having diving classes with young Vincenzo and Paolo; as Gru asks her about whether he has a twin brother, she is shocked and then explains the real story. In fact, she divorced with Robert and hid the truth about having another twin son.

Later, Gru takes a private plane with Lucy and the girls to Dru's Mansion in Freedonia; in his way, he is excited for meeting Dru and guesses which appearance he will be like. As he lands a the nearby apron, he finds that the mansion and the apron are surrounded by and full of a large herd of pigs, and one of them keeps attacking and chasing after Gru. Gru happily greets to Dru as Dru rushes down the stairs, but he is soon shocked to see that Dru is a blond after he takes off his white hat. Dru then asks Fritz to drive Lucy and the girls to the town, and Gru and Dru go to the underground base beneath the garden in the mansion; during the process, Gru falls to the end hard unprepared. Dru then takes Gru to some statues of their ancestors, telling him that the villainy is actually the family tradition. When Robert was alive, he was proud of Gru while he wasn't satisfied with Dru. Gru replies that he quit being villain for a while, so Dru shows him a multi-functional golden vehicle that Robert once used and they both drive to the town wildly. The vehicle is equipped with superb functions, saving them from many following critical circumstances, though Gru is quite shocked and annoyed.

In the town, Dru steals two lollipops from a candy shop cart, and soon he and Gru and chased after Freedonian police. Gru drives fast in lanes and eventually escapes by drilling a big hole to the sea outside the town. In a corner of the beach, Dru persuades Gru to commit another heist, and Gru decides to get the diamond back. At night, Gru exchanges clothes and disguises as Dru; their acts confuses Lucy and the girls. Agnes finishes his dinner quickly and she tells Gru that she is going to find a real unicorn so she needs to go to bead earlier. After Agnes prays to find the unicorn successfully, Gru goes in to the room and climbs up the ladder to reach her bed; at first, he tries to tell her that unicorns don't exist, but he changes his words not to break her heart. As he walks down, he falls to the floor as he forgot the height of the ladder.

In the State Prison, Mel recalls some good memories with Gru when he sees some soap bubbles on the ground and it resembles Gru's face, so he carves the mashed potatoes in the dish and when the Minions and other prisoners are having meal. Later, Gru demonstrates the tight protection around Bratt's Lair to Dru and he plans to go inside the lair alone while Dru waits outside. In his way to the lair, Gru, with a suit of fully body protection, fantasizes about after they retrieving the diamond, imagining that Valerie would be too impressed while he and Lucy can successfully return the AVL. After he springs to the wall of the lair, he finds out that Dru follows him and often causes danger to himself due to his clumsiness. After they get in, Gru later finds himself in Bratt's bedroom, where Bratt hugs the diamond, sleeping; the alarm is accidentally hit and Bratt wakes up, but he doesn't notice Gru or Dru and he leaves the room with the diamond.

Gru is surprised to see that Bratt stored hundreds of Evil Bratt dolls in his lair, and he finds a bubble gum factory with Dru. Gru hides behind some facilities and finds out Bratt decides to put the diamond into a giant robot he built; just then, Gru finds that Dru, who tried a piece of bubble gum, is having enlarging bubble gum from his nose and mouth and he tries to save his brother; Clive notices, and Bratt is surprised to see them both, as he laughs, Gru uses Heimlich maneuver to make the bubble gum spew out to trap Bratt. They barely escape in the helicopter Lucy drives. Gru claims that the diamond can be taken back to the AVL, and Lucy twists his shoulder, telling him not to go behind her back ever again. After they get off the helicopter, Dru is furious that Gru lied to him about his true motives for the heist and they get into an argument. Gru criticizes Dru not having a real job and storms out.

While Gru is getting the rest of the suitcases, Gru finds the real Lucy tied up and gagged in the closet. After he removes her gag, she tells him that Bratt took the girls! Gru and Lucy rush to Dru who is still sulking from their argument. But learning that his nieces have been kidnapped by Bratt, Dru immediately drops his anger at his brother and he, Gru and Lucy board his hovercraft and fly to Hollywood to stop Bratt and rescue the girls. They pass by the plane that the Minions built, and Mel decides to follow them.

As Bratt causes havoc in Hollywood, he notices Gru is coming so he shoots out numerous Bratt dolls to disassemble Gru's flying vehicle; Gru and Dru jump out of it before it crashes, but he is thrown to the streets and loses his consciousness. Dru destroys the core of the giant robot before Bratt cut the street with the laser beam while Gru is in the path. Gru wakes up and wants to find Dru in the ruins, and he sees Bratt, holding keytar, is in front of him. They then starts a dance fight, at first, Gru loses several times, and then he gets his keytar and blows Bratt away by its shock wave of the of the sound, defeating him in a very similar fashion Bratt had done to him earlier. He later reunites with his family and the Minions.

Gru is later seen having a pillow fight with Dru and Minions when Lucy asks them to sleep; as he leaves, he tells Dru not to do anything villainous. But soon, he hears loud noises outside; it turns out that Dru and Minions are driving Gru's Airship and decides to commit crime, and Gru decides to give him five minutes and laughs sinisterly.

Despicable Me 4[]

In the fourth movie, Gru and Lucy are seen to have been rehired by the AVL and even had a child together: Gru Jr.
