The Cannibals, also known as Troglodytes for lacking either proper name or language, are the main antagonists in 2015 Western horror film Bone Tomahawk.

A cannibalistic tribe of Native Americans who live in a cave led by Wolf Skull, they came to a brutal conflict against inhabitants of Bright Hope who in turn, rallied by Sheriff Franklin, Chicory, Brooder and Arthur in response of them killing a stable boy and kidnapping people from their hometown. They are noted to be so savage that other native groups disdained and avoided them.

History[]

Origins[]

The Troglodyte culture is implied to have existed for many generations, as the Native American tribes, who have inhabited the area for centuries, harbor an old hatred for them. The name of their territory, the "Valley of the Starving Men", suggests that this culture may have arisen from a period of famine, when a desperate clan resorted to cannibalism to survive.

Bone Tomahawk[]

While only shown briefly onscreen, their first appearance is when they are trying to kill Purvis and Buddy, two drifters who rob and kill travelers in the beginning of the film. Whereas Buddy got killed, Purvis manages to escape into the nearby town, Bright Hope, only to be arrested by Deputy Chicory and Sheriff Franklin Hunt because the former caught him burying his loots.

Unfortunately for the inhabitants of Bright Hope, the Cannibals, who are tracking Purvis from the previous encounter, has arrived to recapture him. They also killed a stable boy and kidnapped Samantha and Nick along the way on the same night, but in process left behind their arrowheads for Tall Trees, the town's educated Native American man, to find and subsequently identify the attackers. After hearing the news, Hunt prepares to go after the tribe along with Chicory, Brooder and Arthur. However, the group soon faced a setback in form a raider attack that stripped them of their horses followed by Arthur who forced to stay behind to recover after his wounded leg worsened from attempting to break up his friends' resulted fight.

A band of Cannibals ambushed the group with arrows as soon as they closed in to the Valley of the Starving Men. In the ensuing fight, Hunt and Chicory are overwhelmed and captured while Brooder ended up killed, but not before losing three of their own. While in their captive, the two reunites with Samantha and the injured Nick who informed them about Purvis' death and subsequent consumption by the Cannibals. Samantha further reveals that she estimated the number of Cannibals being 12 in total, though the fight prior saw them reduced to 9. Shortly afterwards, Nick met the same grisly fate where the Cannibals stripped him naked before brutally scalped and bisected him alive, and then subsequently feasted on his mutilated remains.

Fortunately for the group, Hunt realizes he has some laudanum he confiscated from Arthur earlier to prevent him from overusing it and tricked several of the Cannibals into drinking it. However, only two of them that are affected where one dies from overdose while another merely unconscious, angering Wolf Skull who ordered his men to cut Hunt's abodmen, shove the heated opium flask into the wound, and shoot him himself with one of confiscated rifles in their disposal in retaliation. Meanwhile, the recovered Arthur follows his friends' trail leading to the Valley and dispatches two more Cannibals along the way. Examining an object embedded in his kills' windpipes after cutting one out, he realizes it to be some sort of primitive whistle for long-range communication among members of Cannibal tribe. He uses it with a great effect to lure one more Cannibal which he then kills and proceeds to interrupt the rest's ongoing torture on Hunt.

The battle between between Hunt's group and the Cannibals start anew with Arthur slays one more Cannibal and the injured Hunt beheads Wolf Skull with one of their bone tomahawks. Arthur then frees Samantha and Chicory, but then forced to leave Hunt behind with a rifle, but not before promising to kill the surviving cannibals as soon as they return to prevent them from terrorizing Bright Hope. As the three leave the cave, they see two pregnant women (who have been raped), who are blinded and have all their limbs amputated.

On their journey out, Arthur blows the Cannibals's whistle, and with no response, they continue to exit. At a distance from the cave, they hear three gunshots, implying that Sheriff Hunt had killed the remaining men of the tribe, likely ending the history of the Cannibals.

Personality[]

The enigmatic troglodytes are products of a bestial culture, kidnapping, murdering, and butchering outsiders for food. It is also their custom to continue their bloodline by raping their own wives even their mothers. Their haunting scream is made by a pipe-like instrument implanted in their windpipes.
