Maximilian is the secondary antagonist of Disney's 1979 live-action film The Black Hole and the novelization of the same name.
While having no voice, the sound effects for him were provided by the late Herb Taylor.
Maximilian is a sinister-looking red robot who aids Dr. Hans Reinhardt alongside the crew of faceless, black-robed android drones, Reinhardt explains that he has lived all alone on the Cygnus for years. After the ship encountered a meteor field and was disabled, he ordered the human crew to return to Earth, but Kate's father chose to remain aboard and has since died. Reinhardt then reveals that he has spent the past twenty years studying the black hole and intends to fly the Cygnus through it. Durant believes that it is possible and asks to accompany Reinhardt on the trip.
The rest of the Palomino crew became suspicious of the faceless drones' human-like behavior: Booth sees a robot limping and Holland witnesses a robot funeral and discovers the Cygnus crew's personal items in the ship's living quarters. Old B.O.B. explains that the faceless drones are actually the human crew, who mutinied when Reinhardt refused to return to Earth and had been lobotomized and "reprogrammed" by Reinhardt to serve him. McCrae's father had led the mutiny and was killed. Using telepathic communication, V.I.N.CENT tells Kate the truth about what happened. When Kate tells Durant, he removes the reflective faceplate from a "drone" to reveal the monstrous face of a crew member. Appalled, Durant tries to flee the bridge with Kate, but Maximilian kills him. Reinhardt takes Kate prisoner, ordering his sentry robots to take her to the ship's hospital bay to be lobotomized.
Just as the process begins, Holland, V.I.N.CENT, and B.O.B. rescue Kate. Meanwhile, fearing the situation is escalating in an extremely dangerous way, Booth attempts to escape alone in the Palomino. Reinhardt orders the craft shot down, but the weapons fire sends the ship crashing into the Cygnus, destroying its port-side antigravity force field generator. A destructive meteor storm then destroys the starboard generator. Without its null-gravity bubble, the Cygnus starts to break apart under the black hole's huge gravitational forces.
Reinhardt and the Palomino survivors separately plan their escape aboard a small probe ship used to study the black hole. Maximilian is ordered by his master to go and prepare the probe ship, but then a large viewscreen falls on Reinhardt, pinning him down. His lobotomized crew stands motionless as he helplessly struggles. Maximilian has a confrontation with the others, and fatally damages B.O.B. before he is damaged by V.I.N.CENT, and drifts out of the broken ship into the black hole. Holland, Pizer, McCrae, and V.I.N.CENT reach the probe ship and launch, only to discover the controls locked onto a flight path that takes them into the black hole.
In a bizarre sequence inside the black hole that resembles Heaven and Hell, Reinhardt becomes merged with Maximilian in an infernal landscape populated by a blasphemous group of black-robed specters resembling the Cygnus drones. Next, a floating and angelic figure with long flowing hair passes through a cathedral-like arched crystal tunnel. The probe ship then emerges from a white hole and is last seen flying through space towards a planet near a bright star. It is unknown what happened to Maximilian afterwards.
Novelization[]
Maximillian first appears when the Palomino crew (consisting of Dr. Alex Durant, Dr. Kate McCrae, Captain Dan Holland, Lieutenant Charlie Pizer, Harry Booth, and V.I.N.CENT) stumble and enters the ship and he spots them, threatening to slice them with his huge, sharp drills when Reinhardt tells him to stand down and he reluctantly complies.
V.I.N.CENT then accidentally bumps into Maximillian and Maximillian decides to put pressure onto him in a attempt to force him in a corner over the elevator wall. Maximillian was then forced by Reinhardt to cease, but he then stores V.I.N.CENT's words in his database and coldly dismisses V.I.N.CENT's twinkle of lights. Maximillian is next seen when Holland and Pitzer try to communicate to him and he again doesn't listen to them before suddenly shoving a old, disheveled robot onto the ground and it starts to try and crawl far from him. Maximillian then stares at V.I.N.CENT before moving along with the rest of the group except McCrae and Durant. Maximillian then terrorizes Holland again by hovering over him and shows that he's more than willing to murder him if he wasn't restrained and then briefly oversees the robots inside the current room they are in.
Maximillian is ordered by Reinhardt to plug into a console to display images of the black hole and Reinhardt's works of art before next showing up to once again lord over the rest of the humanoid robots' assignments from the command console, Maximillian then heads over to his boss to inform him about what Holland found (a graveyard and materials hiding in the original quarters) by beeping before going back. Maximillian then goes to Reinhardt as he talks with McCrae, Booth, Holland, and Pizer about his plans/goals and once again gives information to him before going out of the room.
B.O.B. later reveals to V.I.N.CENT that the humanoid robots were in fact actual people before. Twenty years back, a resistance was formed and Maximillian, being built and created by Reinhardt, helped to destroy them by reprogramming the other robots with the exception of B.O.B., with Reinhardt and Maximillian even murdering Frank McCrae, Kate's father. Maximillian then forcibly captures the survivors and removes their free will and souls by rearranging their brains while stripping them of their flesh and bone, only responding to what Reinhardt requests them to do as empty, soulless husks for two entire decades.
Maximillian escorts one of them into debriefing to inspect the data and instrumentation. After that's done, Maximillian is then called by Reinhardt and when Alex Durant, who was the only one of the Palomino crew to trust him, realizes the errors of his ways thanks to Kate telling him the truth, Maximillian fires a laser that goes through Durant and eviscerates him much to Kate's horror as he next tries to have her roboticized as well on Reinhardt's orders before she flees. Maximillian then attempts to eliminate the rest of the crew under Reinhardt's demands except for V.I.N.CENT and Kate by going to the nearest console and issuing it to the humanoid robots.
Maximillian then goes to the regular console to control the Cygnus itself and tries to fire at the crew in a attempt to dispose of them again, succeeding in blowing up the Palomino with Booth inside, but the rest manage to dodge and fire back. V.I.N.CENT destroys the sentries and a visibly pissed Maximillian decides to go and take care of matters when the Cygnus ship begins to collapse, leaving a mortally wounded Reinhardt when the ship is massively damaged to perish in the process. Maximillian finally faces both V.I.N.CENT and B.O.B. in one last battle as the rest of the crew try to escape, with Maximillian tossing B.O.B. into a wall, which leads to him plummeting hard on the floor and grievously injuring him. Maximillian then tries to dismember V.I.N.CENT, only for V.I.N.CENT to stab and impale Maximillian straight in the middle of his body, resulting in him being sucked out of the Cygnus and sent into the black hole, killing him.
Personality[]
Maximilian does not convey what he has a particular idea in words, but his body language does the talking. He is untrustworthy towards anyone whom he does not know, especially when they are considered to be guests. Despite being extremely loyal to his master, he is also known to refuse to obey the rules and will do anything as he causes him to feel happy and satisfied when he kills Dr. Durant, otherwise, he just pays no heed to Reinhardt's cry for assistance.
