The Old One is the main antagonist of Demon's Souls. It is the source of all the demons in Boletaria.
Appearance[]
The Old One takes the appearance of a massive, serpentine plant-like entity covered in branches and roots near it's head, along with stone-like structure on the rest of it's body. It lacks any facial features other than a gigantic circular maw. On it's back appears to be thousands of massive swords and other long structures deeply stabbing it's body.
Biography[]
Little is known about the origins of the Old One and accounts are conflicting. King Allant calls it a creation of God, while the description for the Talisman of Beasts item implies that the Old One is in fact the god that is worshipped throughout Boletaria.
Long ago, the Old One created a Scourge by releasing a Colorless Fog that turned people into vicious demons. That was until King Allant and his soldiers of Boletaria defeated the demonkind and sealed away the Old One into the Nexus. As the kingdom grew in posterity, Allant himself grew melancholic of life and sought greater power, eventually returning to the Nexus and discovering the Old One. Awaking the ancient demon, Allant was granted ultimate power at the cost of his body. He created a demon replica of himself and with the return of the Old One's Colorless Fog, a second Scourge shrouded the now doomed kingdom.
That was until the Maiden in Black of the Nexus summoned a hero, the Slayer of Demons, to defeat the five archdemons that shield the entrance to the Old One's lair. One by one, the Slayer of Demons defeats them until the fog shrouding the Boletarian Palace vanishes, allowing them to enter the palace and defeat the Old King Allant. Once the barrier has been broken, the Slayer of Demons and Maiden in Black make their way to the Old One's lair.
When the two arrive, the Old One bends down and allows the Slayer of Demon to enter within its body, where they encounter the real King Allant. After defeating Allant, the Maiden in Black lulls the Old One's core back to its slumber. With the Old One's departure back into the fog, Boletaria recovers from the Colorless Fog, but loses its knowledge in the soul arts.
But in the alternative bad ending, should the player kill the Maiden in Black before she completes the ritual, they step over her body and nudges the core themself. Sensing a new and more powerful demonic soul, the Old One makes the player their servant until the world would be covered in dark fog.

- King Allant claims that The Old One itself is actually a creation of God as an act of mercy.
- Alternatively, the introductory cutscene of the game refers to the Old One and demons as an "irrevocable poison", placed into the world after Souls.
- The Talisman of Beasts stated that "the symbol of God was nothing more than the Image of the Old One". What this means is currently unknown, however, if the Talisman's description is taken literally, in can be considered that The Old One was the entity that influenced for the next generations the Church's beliefs in Boletaria. In other words, the God described by King Allant, presumably, is The Old One itself. If The Old One did this deliberately to create a religion around itself, which would subsequentely study the Soul Arts (which The Old One is considered the source of), in can be considered that The Old One it is indeed the God worshipped across Boletaria.
