The underground shrine was made to worship as well as seal the Dragon God. The ancestors of the excavators revered it as a god, and maintained it well.
~ The Dragon God Archstone on the Dragon God.

The Dragon God is a major antagonist and one of the archdemons in the video game Demon's Souls.

Biography[]

Within the deepest pit of Stonefang Tunnel, the preserved skeleton of a massive dragon was discovered within a pool of lava. The Burrowers saw the skeleton as a god and built a sacred temple to worship it. When the awakening of the Old One spread the Colorless Fog spread across Boletaria, the Burrowers feared the dragon would resurrect and built special ballistas to destroy the beast should it ever revive. Indeed, the Colorless Fog reached the chamber and transformed the Dragon God into a massive, malicious demon. The Dragon God killed the Burrowers and became a source of Dragonstone.

Although the player is suppose to meet the Dragon God much later in the game, it can be encountered during the tutorial of the game. If the player defeats the Vanguard, the Dragon God can be encountered. Before the player can approach, the Dragon God unleashes a fiery blast, killing the player instantly and sending their soul to the Nexus.

In Stonefang Tunnel, after defeating Flamelurker, the Dragon God can be encountered once more. Because of how the temple is arranged, the player cannot attack Dragon God with melee weapons, although they can use sorcery or ranged weapons to deal damage from afar. While the player can rush through, the battle works as a stealth boss. The Dragon God deals extremely heavy damage on the player, enough to kill them in one or a few hits. While the Dragon God is passive when its eyes are yellow, when they flash red, the Dragon God has spotted the player and attacks by attacking them with its claws or fire breath. The player has to hide behind the pillars, smashing the damaged ones blocking the route towards the right ballista.

Once the ballista fires at the Dragon God, it punctures its left arm. The Dragon God then uses its right arm to smash the ballista, destroying it while also removing debris blocking the way to the left ballista. The route to the left ballista is a little easier as the Dragon God will search from both the top and bottom floors of the temple. However, the pillars are further between one another, allowing the Dragon God to spot the character easier.

Once the left ballista is fired and both arms are punctured, the Dragon God falls immobilized on a small ledge, allowing the player to finish off the Dragon God by striking its head with roughly a tenth of its health remaining. It is incapable of attacking the player, but when it exhales, firebreath comes out of its mouth. Once the Dragon God is slain, it drops the Dragon Demon's Soul and a Pure Dragonstone.

Trivia[]

  • A glitch can occur if the player dies at the same time as the Dragon God dies, preventing them from gathering the Dragon Demon's Soul and thus making it impossible to finish the game.
  • It is possible to use sorcery or ranged weapons to kill the Dragon God without having to fire the ballistae.
  • Dragon God's Soul, the Dragon Demon Soul, can be consumed for 26,400 souls, or traded to Sage Frieke for the Fireball spell, Yuria the Witch for the Firestorm spell, or Saint Urbain for the God's Wrath miracle (similarly used by Maiden Astraea).
