I don't think so. We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Does that sound "fine"?
~ Mirror Ash (Bad Ash) to Ash.
Oh, you wanna know? 'Cause the answer's easy! I'm BAD Ash... and you're GOOD Ash! You're a goody little two-shoes! Little goody two-shoes! Little goody two-shoes!
~ Bad Ash to Good Ash (the real Ash Williams).
I... live... AGAIN!!!
~ Evil Ash upon his resurrection.

Evil Ash is the secondary antagonist of the Evil Dead franchise.

He is an demonic doppelganger of Ash Williams who emerged from the depths of darkness with an insidious purpose. In the ancient year of 1300 AD, this sinister replica rallied an army of malevolent beings, known as Deadites, to wage a ruthless siege on Castle Kandar. Their paramount objective was to seize hold of an invaluable artifact, the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis. However, despite his wicked intentions, the clone was ultimately vanquished by his virtuous counterpart, Ash Williams, who was often referred to as the "goody little two-shoes." It is essential to note that this clone is not merely an illusion or a figment of Ash's imagination; rather, it is the embodiment of his darkest inclinations, given physical form by the dreaded Kandarian Demon.

Just like his original counterpart, he was portrayed by Bruce Campbell, who also played Carl Greig in Icebreaker, Himcules in My Life as a Teenage Robot, Mayor Shelbourne in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and King Edmund in Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure.

Biography[]

Evil Dead II[]

Mirror Ash

Bad/Mirror Ash from Evil Dead II.

Evil Ash's origin can be traced back to his initial incarnation as Bad Ash. This malevolent entity emerged from a mirror during the tumultuous events of Evil Dead II, embarking on a mission to inflict torment upon his heroic counterpart. Bad Ash's relentless efforts were aimed at pushing Ash to the brink of insanity, thereby highlighting a precarious battle between Ash and his inner demons, manifesting itself in a tangible and literal form. This multifaceted scenario not only underscored the deteriorating mental state of Ash but also provided a symbolic representation of his internal struggles.

Army of Darkness[]

Evil Ash (left) and Good Ash (right).

To Ash's horror, one of the Tiny Ashes jumps down his throat, merging with his being and transforming him into a twisted version of himself known as Bad Ash. This split in his personality leads to an absurd and comical showdown between the original Ash and his evil counterpart. In an unconventional and somewhat anticlimactic manner, Ash manages to defeat Bad Ash by dismembering him and burying the remains. In a thrilling turn of events, both Ash and the terrifying Kandarian Demon find themselves transported back in time. As Ash desperately tries to escape the clutches of the demonic spirit, he seeks refuge in a windmill. However, his attempt to find safety takes an unexpected twist when he accidentally shatters a mirror, causing his reflection to split into multiple Tiny Ashes. These miniature versions of himself are brought to life as extensions of the Kandarian Demon, creating a chaotic situation. However, the consequences of this battle are far from over. Trapped beneath the earth, Bad Ash, now a part of the Kandarian Demon, undergoes a drastic change in demeanor. Once a mischievous and comical entity, he becomes more serious and ominous. Despite his newfound seriousness, Bad Ash is rendered powerless and unable to act due to the dismemberment inflicted upon him.

Right after that, Ash accidentally utters the incorrect words from the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, a book that houses the Kandarian Demon's essence. This mistake brings forth Bad Ash, a much stronger and invincible version of Evil Ash. Bad Ash seizes control of the Deadite armies and becomes their leader, opposing the heroic Ash who finds himself reluctantly playing the role of a hero in a medieval army, all due to complications arising from his time-travel adventures.

Throughout the duration of the movie, Evil Ash engaged in numerous battles with Good Ash, each confrontation resulting in his already deteriorating body becoming increasingly grotesque as he subjected himself to a series of brutal and potentially fatal acts. Astonishingly, despite the extensive damage sustained throughout the film, Evil Ash remained relentlessly driven by an unhinged fervor to acquire the Necromonicon, the unparalleled wellspring of power for the Deadites, from the very human settlement that Ash valiantly sought to protect.

Evil Ash, accompanied by his notorious "Army of Darkness," launched a ferocious attack on the settlement, igniting a full-blown war. As the battle raged on, the real Ash joined the fray, lending his aid to humanity's cause and shifting the tide in their favor. However, Evil Ash proved to be a formidable opponent, utilizing his immense strength and lethal swordsmanship to steadily advance towards the coveted Necronomicon. In a desperate move, the original Ash resorted to setting his evil counterpart ablaze, hoping to bring an end to his reign of terror. In a stroke of irony, the cunning Ash devised a cunning plan to vanquish his wicked doppelgänger once and for all. He swiftly maneuvered Evil Ash onto a lit bag of gunpowder, strategically positioned on a catapult. With nerves of steel, Ash severed the cord, propelling Evil Ash through the air towards an explosive demise. Thus, the settlement was saved from the clutches of Evil Ash and his malevolent forces, thanks to the valor and resourcefulness of the real Ash. The triumphant hero emerged from the chaos, victorious in the face of overwhelming odds, ensuring the safety and well-being of humanity. Yet, to everyone's astonishment, even the flames could not quell Evil Ash's determination. Transformed into a gruesome skeleton, he engaged in a fierce confrontation with his heroic counterpart once more. In a twist of fate, it was the real Ash who managed to seize the upper hand. With a swift strike, he severed Evil Ash's right hand, effectively disarming him. But the battle was far from over.

Evil Dead: Hail to the King[]

Determined to save his beloved, Ash equips himself with an ancient axe, prepared to face the horrors that lie ahead. But just as he musters his courage, a twisted version of himself, known as Bad Ash, emerges from a nearby mirror, catching him off guard and rendering him unconscious. However, their trip takes a horrifying turn when Ash's own severed hand mysteriously reappears and begins playing a cassette that holds the incantation from the Necronomicon. Frantically trying to intervene, Ash is unable to stop the hand in time, resulting in the release of the malevolent forces once more. In a shocking turn of events, Jenny is kidnapped by the unleashed evil. Eight years have passed since the events of Army of Darkness, and Ash finds himself tormented by terrifying nightmares that revolve around the dreaded Necronomicon and the menacing Deadites. To add to his distress, his new love interest, Jenny, suggests revisiting the infamous Professor Knowby's cabin, the very place where his nightmarish journey began. Excited yet apprehensive, Ash agrees to the idea.

After gaining knowledge about a priest named Father Allard who, as per Professor Knowby's records, played a role in deciphering the Necronomicon, Ash seeks the guidance of the priest at his church. Together, they devise a plan to rescue Jenny and send the Deadites back to their original realm. As Ash manages to gather five scattered pages from the Necronomicon and the Kandarian Dagger from the deceased Annie Knowby, who had been transformed into a Deadite and buried beneath the cabin, he reunites with Father Allard. United, the two men locate Jenny, and Father Allard initiates the process of opening a portal to rid her of the demonic possession. However, when the portal is fully opened, it is revealed that the priest is actually Bad Ash in disguise, who seizes Jenny and plunges into the portal. Reacting instinctively, Ash leaps into the portal as well, determined to rescue Jenny and confront the treacherous Bad Ash.

After a long and arduous pursuit, Ash finally catches up with his nemesis, Evil Ash, just moments before the completion of a dark ritual that would result in Ash's sacrificial demise at the hands of the malevolent Dark Ones. Engaging in a witty exchange of words, the two adversaries engage in a fierce and epic battle, with the fate of the entire world hanging in the balance. As the clash intensifies, Bad Ash is severely injured, causing him to undergo a painful metamorphosis into a monstrous creature, reminiscent of a stone mural depicting the ancient Kandarian Demon that Ash had previously encountered in a foreboding castle. Despite the overwhelming odds, Ash manages to muster enough courage and skill to stall Evil Ash, granting him the precious time needed to recite a powerful incantation. This incantation ultimately banishes Evil Ash into a mysterious portal, which he is unable to resist due to the grievous wounds he sustained during their climactic confrontation.

Lesser Evil Ash[]

Ash-vs-evil-dead-two-ashes

Ash and the lesser Evil Ash.

Unlike the prior incarnations, this Evil Ash originates from Ash's own severed hand, which had unfortunately succumbed to corruption and transformed into a malevolent Deadite arm. This lesser variant of Evil Ash possesses a distinct and ominous presence, adding a new layer of darkness and trepidation to the already spine-chilling narrative. In summary, the appearance of this new Evil Ash in the episode "Ashes to Ashes" of Ash vs Evil Dead adds depth, complexity, and a heightened sense of personal peril to the narrative. With its origins deeply entwined with our hero Ash, this incarnation of Evil Ash presents a formidable challenge and reminds us that evil can take many forms, even emerging from within ourselves. In the episode titled "Ashes to Ashes" of the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead, a fresh and newly transformed version of Evil Ash emerges onto the scene. This particular iteration of Evil Ash exists within the same universe as the iconic film series. However, it is important to note that this Evil Ash differs from the previous versions witnessed in Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II. With the emergence of this corrupted Deadite arm, the battle against Evil Ash takes on a renewed urgency and complexity. Our courageous hero must confront his own inner demons, not only in the form of external threats but also in the form of his own severed appendage turned malevolent entity. As the story unfolds, viewers are introduced to this sinister incarnation of Evil Ash, who poses a significant threat to our beloved protagonist, Ash. With his origins rooted in Ash's own physical being, this version of Evil Ash showcases a more personal and intimate connection to our hero, amplifying the emotional stakes and intensifying the struggle between good and evil. The inclusion of this unique incarnation of Evil Ash in the TV series further solidifies the interconnectedness of the Evil Dead universe, bridging the gap between the films and the small screen. It expands upon the mythology and lore established in the original movies, while also presenting fans with fresh and captivating storylines that continue to captivate and terrify audiences. The introduction of this new Evil Ash not only adds an intriguing twist to the storyline, but it also serves as a reminder of the relentless and enduring nature of evil. Despite Ash's previous triumphs over the forces of darkness, evil finds a way to persist and manifest itself in unexpected and formidable ways.

As the trio races against time, Ash's heart pounds in his chest. He knows he must find Evil Ash and put an end to this madness once and for all. With a determined resolve, he sets out to locate his malevolent doppelgänger, ready to face him head-on in a fight for their very existence. Suddenly, Evil Ash emerges from the shadows, a malevolent smirk on his face. He had regenerated from Ash's severed hand, a twisted embodiment of all that was dark and wicked. With a voice dripping with deceit, he attempts to manipulate Amanda into abandoning Ash and running away with him. The temptation is almost too much for her to resist, but fate intervenes in the most unexpected way. The stage is set for an epic clash between good and evil. As Ash and Evil Ash lock eyes, the air crackles with tension. The fate of Ash, Amanda, and their newfound allies hangs precariously in the balance, as the battle for survival and redemption commences. Amanda's eyes widen in horror as she catches sight of Evil Ash's decayed hand. The sight alone is enough to snap her out of his spell, and she responds with a series of scathing insults. Enraged by her defiance, Evil Ash's temper reaches a boiling point, and he launches himself at her with a fury fueled by his twisted desires. A brutal and fierce battle ensues between the two adversaries. The sound of clashing fists and desperate cries echo throughout the cabin, as Amanda fights valiantly to protect herself. In a moment of sheer bravery, she manages to sever Evil Ash's decaying hand, momentarily weakening him. Ash and Amanda arrive at the cabin, their anticipation filling the air with a mix of excitement and trepidation. With a determined look on his face, Ash sets off to search the workshed, leaving Amanda alone momentarily. Little did they know, an unexpected and sinister presence was about to make its grand entrance. However, Evil Ash is not one to be easily defeated. In a desperate and merciless act, he swings a sharp cleaver into Amanda's shoulder, causing a surge of pain and anguish to course through her. Collapsing to the ground, she clings to life as the room spins around her.

Pablo and Kelly found themselves in a perplexing situation where they had to discern the true identity of Ash, amidst the confusion created by the presence of an imposter. Both of them vied for the title of the genuine Ash, employing tactics such as making subtle racist comments and referencing personal information about their partners that only the real Ash would possess. Eventually, after an intense standoff, Evil Ash cunningly urged them to shoot both individuals, claiming that the real Ash had a preference for Asians. Nonetheless, Pablo and Kelly managed to make the right call and eliminated Evil Ash. However, their ordeal was far from over, as the real Ash had to once again confront the gruesome task of dismembering the remains of his deceased evil twin.

Comics Continuity[]

However, remaining true to his eternal existence, Evil Ash makes a comeback in Evil Dead: Hail to the King, showcasing his remarkable shapeshifting prowess and the extraordinary power to hurl blazing fireballs. Adding to his villainous persona, Evil Ash becomes a recurring adversary in the Evil Dead comics, embodying the sinister counterpart of Ash in physical form, akin to the events depicted in the movies. Within the pages of these comics, Evil Ash becomes consumed by an all-consuming fixation on eliminating his "pure" half, relentlessly pursuing his dark agenda.

Personality[]

Army of Darkness Incarnation[]

In addition to his merciless and domineering nature, Evil Ash also possesses many of Ash's characteristics. Just like Ash, he bursts into the castle with a loud yell, creating a sense of drama and adventure. Furthermore, Evil Ash employs humorous facial expressions and gestures while trying to seduce Sheila or engaging in combat with the knights. These traits inherited from Ash add an extra layer of entertainment and amusement to Evil Ash's already formidable persona.

Lesser Evil Ash[]

In the Lesser Evil Ash iteration, his personality closely resembles that of his Army of Darkness counterpart. However, he possesses a heightened level of manipulative cunning, demonstrated when he successfully seduces Amanda before ultimately taking her life, with intentions to repeat this deceitful act with his other victims. It is important to note that Ash's manipulation skills serve as his only advantage, as he lacks any inherent powers or abilities.

Powers and Abilities[]

Army of Darkness Incarnation[]

Being also an extension of the Kandarian Demon itself, Evil Ash has the following powers:

  • Immortality: After being reanimated by the Necronomicon, Evil Ash can survive nearly anything into the form of a decomposed body, such as when he was lanced by a spear or stabbed multiple times by a sword. However, he was unable to survive an explosion from gunpowder.
  • Deadite Conversion: He was able to transform Sheila into a Deadite without killing her.
  • Deadites Rulership: Evil Ash was the supreme leader of the Army of Darkness, without any undead challenging his authority.
  • Swordplay: During the final battle, he showed himself to be a good sword fighter.
  • Marskmanship: He showed himself to be a good shooter with a crossbow.
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat: He was a good bare hands fighter, proven by his fight with Ash, who himself is a great opponent.

Ash vs Evil Dead Incarnation[]

The Evil Ash featured in the Ash vs Evil Dead episode "Ashes to Ashes" is the lesser, inferior variant of the one whom the original Ash faced in the events of Army of Darkness, as this particular Evil Ash lacks all of the previous incarnation's powers and is immediately killed off. But he is still a dangerous opponent as this Evil Ash was also manipulative, though not competent enough to save himself from Pablo and Kelly.

Trivia[]

  • Wiseman, a servant of King Arthur of England, refers to Evil Ash as "the evil", which is also used to refer to the evil force comprised of the demon spirits from the first two films and incidentally is seen chasing Ash moments before Evil Ash comes out of the mirror. This reveals that Evil Ash is in fact, a physical extension of the Kandarian Demon combined with Ash's dark side in the mirror. Further explanation of Wiseman's words at that moment was the Kandarian Demon managing to take some traits from Ash while possessing him, resulting in Evil Ash's birth and power over the Deadite army called Army of Darkness.
  • Evil Ash in his Deadite form can be considered similar to Jason Voorhees (who was also resurrected by the Necronomicon). Both are able to withstand injuries which would kill anyone else. Evil Ash's immortality isn't centered on nearly as much, however, as he is completely destroyed at the end of Army of Darkness.
  • Evil Ash is heavily referenced with the Taker of Souls when appearing as Abomination Mia.
