Octavian is the secondary antagonist of The Heroes of Olympus series, serving as the main antagonist of The Blood of Olympus, and the overarching antagonist of The Trials of Apollo series. He is a Roman legacy descended from Apollo, Augur at Camp Jupiter, and Centurion of the First Cohort, he is an eighteen-year-old demigod who reads the stuffing of toy animals in order to see if a new demigod or legacy can stay at Camp Jupiter.

Biography[]

The Son of Neptune[]

After Percy Jackson appears at Camp Jupiter, Hazel Levesque takes him to Jupiter's temple to see if he can join the legion. Upon turning around Percy tells Octavian he reminds him of someone, before Octavian takes Percy's Panda pillow pet and slices it open, proclaiming good omens

Later that day, after losing the night's war games, he is implied to have murdered fellow centurion Gwendolyn by running her through from behind with his pillum. Once Mars arrives and warns the camp about Thanatos being held captive in Alaska, writing instructions to "Go to Alaska. Find Thanatos and free him. Come back by sundown on June twenty-fourth or die.", leading Octavian to mention how prophecies are supposed to be vague (before seeing Mars casually pull a grenade off his belt).

The House of Hades[]

When Camp Jupiter's praetor Reyna leaves to meet with the seven demigods (Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, Jason Grace, Piper McLean, Leo, Frank Zhang and Hazel Levesque), Octavian goes against her wishes and plans to attack Camp Half Blood and takes the camp's legion to Long Island (where Camp Half Blood is based) and planned to attack the camp on August 1, which was also the day the Earth Goddess Gaea was to rise. He believed that by eliminating the Greeks, he could defeat Gaea by "healing the gods.

The Blood of Olympus[]

He allowed a legacy of Orcus named Bryce Lawrence to rejoin the legion, despite being banished from Camp Jupiter by Reyna for killing his own centurion for fun and unmeasurable cruelty toward animals, such as setting a cat on fire.Octavian ends up dying a hero after launching himself at Gaia, dying on impact. In this process. he also damages Festus and kills Leo Valdez.

Post Death[]

In the first Trials of Apollo book The Hidden Oracle (which takes place six months after The Blood of Olympus), it is revealed that Octavian, along with Luke Castellan, was supplied funding by Nero via Triumvirate Holdings.

It is revealed in the Trials of Apollo: The Tyrant's Tomb that Reyna once considered him romantically, much to Apollo's dismay.

Appearance[]

Octavian is a skinny eighteen-year-old with blonde hair with blue eyes and has a SPQR tattoo (which all demigods at Camp Jupiter have) with a lyre (the symbol of Apollo) and seven lines on it, meaning that he has been attending Camp Jupiter since he was eleven. He also wears a t-shirt with a white toga over it and jeans during Senate meetings.

Trivia[]

  • Octavian bears a slight resemblance to Luke Castellan as both have blonde hair and blue eyes and both oppose Percy Jackson. Though unlike Octavian, Luke redeems himself by sacrificing himself to defeat Kronos and makes peace with Percy before he died, while Octavian makes his sacrifice on accident, though he never technically worked for Gaea. Nonetheless, Percy actually noted that Octavian looked a lot like Luke.
  • In The Blood of Olympus Octavian dies by launching himself with an onager, which is similar to a catapult, which can be considered dramatic irony, as in The House of Hades, Frank said that their first order of business should be launching Octavian away in a catapult.
  • Octavian receives returning customer discounts at Build-A-Bear
  • Despite the fact Octavian is referred to as an Augur, Augury is the ancient practice of divination through watching birds and the heavens. A diviner who foretells the future through the entrails of animals is referred to as a haruspex.
