“ | Remember, Rusty in here, I'm your doctor, not your father. Now let's get back to it, shall we? You were telling me how you're ungrateful for all the opportunities your father has given you, and you blame me for all your problems. | „ |
~ Jonas to Rusty during a "therapy session". |
Dr. Jonas Venture, Sr. is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside The Sovereign) of the Adult Swim series The Venture Bros.. He is the father of Rusty Venture and the late Jonas Venture Jr, as well as the inventor of the cloning machine that Rusty used to clone his own sons.
He was voiced by Paul Boocock.
Personality[]
While at first, he appears to be a heroic, loving father and friend, it is eventually revealed that he is a horribly abusive father who has endangered his own son time and time again so that he could live out his fantasies of being a hero. It is even implied that his actions had killed Rusty and resulted in Jonas cloning him repeatedly either out of love or to replace him when necessary. At one point, he was the therapist for Rusty Venture, but instead of making him feel better about himself, he snuck out and only made him feel worse. While he did beat up the men who kidnapped his son, he was at fault for leaving him unattended when he went off to a wedding. This abuse would turn Rusty Venture into the bitter man that he is today and would impact how he raised his own sons but unlike Jonas, he showed real love to the kids.
Despite fighting supervillains, he does so for fun instead of attempting to protect innocent people from them, and is willing to murder them when he grows tired of foiling their schemes. He was responsible for the mutation of several orphans after he left them to die but they ironically worship him.
In addition, he also shows no decency or morals, as he was shown to be having an affair with Mz. Quymn, despite her being married to Horace Gentlemen, one of his friends, though it was later shown they were swingers. Jonas' affair was implied to have conceived Tara Quymn and he appeared to have no part in raising her. He also blackmailed his partner Blue Morpho into doing what he wants using a sex tape and is hinted to have slept with her, possibly leading to the birth of The Monarch. His other teammates (though also amoral to an extent) would object when he turned him into a robotic servant, which he himself personally considered to be an amazing feat of science. They correctly deduced that Jonas would get bored with this after he expressed excitement at bring his dead friend back to life, verified when he made him a nanny to Rusty.
Jonas is easily the most malicious antagonist of the show, as he shows no remorse over his actions or genuine concern for other people.
Biography[]
Jonas hails from a family of Scientists and followed in the footsteps of his father when he grew up. Jonas went onto be one of the most famous scientists and adventurers in the world, with the public worshipping him. He assembled Team Venture and traveled across the world halting villains and creating inventions for the world.
At some point, he had a child named Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture who would go on travel with his father and later in life follow in his footsteps. Also, unknown to Jonas, Rusty in fact had a twin who was absorbed in the womb but was still alive.

For a while, the cause of his death was unknown but it is later Jonas was killed when he was ejected into space, but in reality, his team were able to locate him and he was to be put in a life support machine known as the PROBLEM and be revived but his entire body was shattered with the exception of his head. However, he still survived by absorbing nutrients of insects and rodents within the facility the PROBLEM was kept. His Head would later be discovered by his own son.
When Blue Morpho discovered him, he uploaded himself into the PROBLEM and spoke to Jonas mentally. Jonas and Morpho spoke about the past, with it being shown that Jonas had blackmailed Morpho into doing his bidding with the tape. Some of his heinous requests include: taking Kano, getting plutonium, killing enemies, and seducing Dr. Z. Jonas was also implied to have use this all as a chance to sleep with Morpho's wife after eyeing a picture of her and hinting to Morpho that he could help with the fertility.
He secretly contacted Thaddeus and told him of intentions to take over Morpho's body as a substitute until they could clone a new body for Jonas. He also asked Billy Quizboy into helping with the procedure, despite Jonas knowing this would kill his former friend at the same time. His plan was interrupted by The Monarch, who unintentionally got the Blue Morpho to disconnect the PROBLEM to see his son alive and well, made Jonas tried to take Blue Morpho’s body by force.
