Akane, I had hoped you would understand.
~ Kirito angry with Akane
Sibyl, it won't be long before I bring you to justice.
~ Kirito Kamui

Kirito Kamui is the main antagonist of the second season of the anime series Psycho-Pass. He is a person who cannot be detected by any scanners or by the Dominators themselves. He aids and abets criminals, including Akira Kitazawa, with his ability to clarify their Hues.

He is voiced by Ryohei Kimura in the Japanese version and Clifford Chapin in the English version, both of whom also voice Kaito Yashio.

Appearance[]

He has messy black hair and black eyes. He wraps his whole body with clothes and gloves, only showing his face. However, in the final episode, it is indicated that this appearance is itself a hologram, obscuring his grotesque true appearance as an individual grafted together from many donors.

History[]

In May 2099, Kamui is on board of an airplane with his elementary school for a school trip. However, the plane crashes into Mount Kumataka, apparently because of a problem with the airframe. While everyone else is killed during the crash, Kamui mysteriously survives.

Even if he has survived, his body is badly damaged and Kamui needs to go through difficult and risky surgeries. One of the involved doctors is Yohei Masuzaki. During the surgeries, various parts of the corpses of his deceased schoolmates are transplanted into his body. However, Kamui doesn't become a "ghost" until his new implanted parts are fully engrafted. His nature as a collective in a single body causes the Sibyl System to be unable to judge him, thus rendering him invisible to it.

Bio[]

For unknown reasons Kirito has been giving people with clouded Hues a drug that can keep them their crime coefficient stable so they can go undetected by the Public Safety Bureau and do any crime they wish to do.

Kirito seems to care deeply about the people he "helps" as he started to cry when Akira Kitazawa was killed by the bureau. Kirito seems to have deep obsession with Akane Tsunemori as he broke into her home and wrote the words "WC" that stands for "what color" and he also thought Akane would understand his need to keep criminals safe from the Safety Bureau.

He has many similarities to Shogo Makishima such as being obsessed with an Inspector, in his case with Akane, while Shogo Makishima was with Shinya Kogami, both wanted to free people from the The Sibyl System and they are willing to killing innocent people to achieve their goals, they have followers who are willing to do anything they say, and both created an invention that can make people go completely undetected by the Sibyl System.

The big difference between Kirito and Shogo is the motivations to defeat the Sibyl System. Kirito legitimately wants to help people and keep their Hues clear, while Shogo wants to create chaos to destroy the Sibyl System for the sake of both vengeance and entertainment.

Kirito begins his campaign against the Sibyl System in earnest by murdering an Enforcer and abducting Inspector Mizue Shisui, leaving behind his calling card "WC?" to taunt the Safety Bureau. By removing Shisui's right eye and using it to point her Dominator at her, he finds that the weapon can indeed judge even an Inspector. With this knowledge, he sways Shisui to his side by clearing her Hue and orchestrates a hostage situation to prove his theory, then continues setting up large-scale crimes to stress the Sibyl System while collecting Dominators in the background.

After killing a group of politicians who were connected to the "Season of Hell," a period of turmoil that included his plane crash, Kirito moves to achieve his ultimate revenge against the Sibyl System. He bombs the subway system to flood it, leaving five hundred passengers as hostages for him and his accomplices. Using the Dominators he stole to scan all of his hostages at once, he overloads the Sibyl System, forcing it to reroute its network traffic and in the process reveal its location beneath Nona Tower. En route to Sibyl he encounters Akane again, and she goes with him, intending to arrest him once he has settled his grudge against the system.

They are confronted by Misako Togane, the head of the Togane Foundation and mastermind of Kirito's surgeries, who is now a member of the Sibyl System and operating the body of Chief Joshu Kasei. However, during their confrontation, Sibyl chooses to sever its tie to Misako, leaving her vulnerable to a Dominator's judgment. Kirito executes her and continues on to Sibyl's location with Akane, where he confronts it with his true agenda: Sibyl must either judge Kirito despite his nature as a collective, opening itself up to judgment in the process, or admit that it has a fatal flaw in that it cannot judge collectives. Sibyl chooses the former option, but removes some of the brains from its network, lowering its own Crime Coefficient back down to a safe level while Kirito's Crime Coefficient is revealed to be over 400. Sibyl orders Akane to kill Kirito, but she refuses, insisting on arresting him and handling his case by the book.

Akane and Kirito are suddenly ambushed by Sakuya Togane, who has gone insane after seeing the remains of his mother's vessel. He attempts to darken Akane's Hue by taunting her with information about her grandmother's murder, but Kirito intervenes, calming Akane with his therapeutic skills. Kirito and Togane fire their Dominators at each other, and Kirito lands a mortal blow on Togane but takes a direct hit that kills him moments later.

Trivia[]

  • He has the same seiyu as Ryogo Kozuki was Ryohei Kimura
  • The Kanji of his surname "Kamui" (鹿矛囲) mean translated "deer surrounded by spears," which is interestingly a perfect description of the Sibyl System ruling over Japan.
