Villain Overview

This was not your destiny, Shinnok. Once again, the Thunder God has upset the balance of history. But know this-- the Arc of the Universe bends to my will. It is only a matter of time.
~ Kronika to her son Shinnok.
I've been expecting you. Your life, your name. They will be wiped from history! Come, it is time.... to die.
~ Kronika to the player and her most famous quote.

Kronika, also known as Lady Kronika and the Keeper of Time, is one of the overarching antagonists of the Mortal Kombat series.

She is an extremely powerful divine entity with the power over time and the mother of the two opposing Elder Gods, Lord Shinnok and Lady Cetrion. It is revealed that Kronika is responsible for every event behind the original and rebooted timelines, making her responsible for nearly everything that has happened in the entire franchise.

She is voiced by Jennifer Hale, who also played Sedusa and Princess Morbucks in The Powerpuff Girls, Rojo in Ben 10, Shannon Lucas in Scooby-Doo! Moon Monster Madness, Alecto in God of War: Ascension, Black Knight in Generator Rex, and Killer Frost in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Biography[]

Past[]

The Great Titans

The Titans

Kronika is the keeper of time. She alone has overseen hundreds of timelines and planned their armageddon. She had two children, both opposing Elder Gods known as Shinnok and Cetrion. She mentioned that she is a member of a enigmatic ancient race of cosmic entities called the Titans.

Because Raiden installed a new plan to deal with Earthrealm's enemies, and after the decapitation of her son, she believes that the forces of good and evil have became unbalanced, and wishes to erase the timeline to create a more perfect one, a "New Era". Due to her plans, both past and present versions of characters have began to meet each other, due to both time points merging. The future self of Raiden got erased because only one version could exist at one time.

According to Raiden, Kronika is the only character who is able to manipulate time, and she restarted the universe many times to find a perfect version. She does so without showing any regard towards the trillions of lives lost to achieve this.

Mortal Kombat 11[]

Kronika emerges from the shadows and silently enters the Jinsei Chamber at the heart of the Sky Temple in Earthrealm momentarily after the darkened Raiden wearing Shinnok's cursed Amulet leaves. While her powers freezes the blood draining out of the tortured Shinnok's detached head, she speaks with him on how displeased she is with Raiden's actions upsetting the balance of time. Despite this and Shinnok being her son, she makes no effort to restore him.

With the Cathedral of Shinnok demolished and the Netherrealm Palace built on it ages ago within the Netherrealm now crumbled by Special Forces attacks led by Lord Raiden, Kronika appears before the distraught Revenants Liu Kang and Kitana, rebuilding the demonic palace before their very eyes by reversing time with ease. Kronika then transported both Revenant Liu Kang and Revenant Kitana to the Keep on the Isle of Kronika, where she explains her great plan to remake the universe. She convinces them to join her by explaining that if her plan goes well, Raiden would no be a threat to either of them.

Due to her current utilization of her obscure "sacred" magic known as Timecraft at the Keep, present day Raiden is wiped form history, with various older versions of characters being brought back from the past. At the Lost Kytinn Hive away from the Koliseum somewhere in Outworld, she allies herself and her forces with Shao Kahn, the Black Dragon Clan, D'Vorah, the Kollector, and even Frost alongside both Sektor and the Cyber-Lin Kuei, working in these forces to help reshape the world.

In the Wu Shi Dragon Grotto beneath the Wu Shi Academy's Shaolin Trap Dungeon, Geras passes past Liu Kang and Kung Lao off, after successfully using a machine of Kronika's design to gain additional Jinsei samples, as he delivers to her, not killing them to preserve their present versions. Then, she commands Shao Kahn, present Kitana, and Sektor to rally her forces, before heading off and recruiting present Jax. After Shao Kahn's and the Black Dragon's defeat, she scalps her Hourglass and gets her Soul Crown from Jax and Cetrion.

Arriving at the Shirai Ryu Clan's Fire Gardens and kidnapping past Liu Kang, she warned her forces that Raiden will be launching a final assault on her Keep.

Summoning Kung Lao, Jade, and Kitana to command her armies at the Keep, she is soon bested by a newly divine present Liu Kang, who fused himself with Raiden. Restarting time to the prehistoric age, she commences the final battle between herself and Liu Kang. She loses this fight, turned into glass and shattered to pieces.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath[]

As Kronika is using the hourglass in the past, she is alerted by Frost and Geras that Shang Tsung, Nightwolf and Fujin have managed to escape from the Void. She is not happy about this believing the void to be inescapable. So she sends Frost and Geras to go deal with the problem.

Later she discovers their plans to intercept her and grab the Crown. So she sends Cetrion to Shang Tsung's island to get the crown while also warning her to not appeal to their better nature, but Nightwolf and Sindel are already there and confronts Cetrion who defeats her. A wounded Cetrion, then returns to Kronika who reassures her that it wasn't her fault. Kronika keeps managing the hourglass trying to create her new era, but worries that Shang Tsung is becoming too powerful.

Later on, Kronika confronts Liu Kang, Shang Tsung, Raiden, Fujin, Scorpion, and Hanzo Hasashi. She warns against Shang Tsung's inevitable betrayal and asks Raiden who he wishes to keep time, her or Shang Tsung, but Raiden responds with neither so Kronika attacks all of them. But just before she finishes them off Fujin gets the crown and is able to push back Kronika. This causes Kronika to become weakened and she retreats.

While the Special Forces, Kitana's Outworld, and Shaolin Monks are attacking the Kronika's keep so Kronika asks Cetrion to transfer her essence to increase her power for the upcoming battle. Shang Tsung now with the crown in hand storms the Hourglass room with Sindel and Shao Kahn. Kronika in a last-ditch attempt sends the revenants of Kung Lao, Jade and Kitana but Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn and Sindel are quickly able to defeat them.

Shang Tsung then knocks Kronika out with one of his energy blasts, but Shao Kahn and Sindel wanting to power quickly attempt to take out Kronika, but Shang Tsung then betrays Shao Kahn and Sindel. He reveals he plans on taking her power all for himself, but offers to let Shao Kahn and Sindel serve him as minions. Enraged Shao Kahn and Sindel battle Shang Tsung while Kronika watches on even saying that Shang Tsung has nobody left to betray.

Shang Tsung is eventually victorious and steals Shao Kahn and Sindel's souls now having the strength to kill Kronika, but Shang Tsung offers Kronka as well to serve him in his new era, but Kronika refuses and the two battle. But not even Kronika is able to defeat Shang Tsung due to his increased power from the Crown. she is extremely weakened but continues to refuse to serve Shang Tsung so Shang Tsung uses his powers to absorb Kronika and turns her to dust.

Mortal Kombat 1[]

In the aftermath of Kronika's demise, Shang Tsung, from a timeline where he defeated Liu Kang and ascended to power, masquerades as the deceased Titaness, and travels to the new timeline Liu Kang from an alternate possibility where he was the victor of their battle created. There, he appears before its version of Shang Tsung in the form of Kronika, who Liu Kang had neutralized by writing his destiny especially to keep him from rising to any form of power. Using the name Damashi, Shang Tsung uses the appearance of Kronika to manipulate and use many of the realms threats that had been given lowly lives to stop them from ever possibly becoming a threat once more, before abandoning the form of Kronika when he is later discovered.

It is also revealed that due to her battles with Liu Kang and Shang Tsung, the timeline's fabric was ripped apart, leading to many other timelines with different possible outcomes.

Appearance[]

The Crown of Kronika

The Crown of Kronika

Kronika has a similar body to a human woman, having a bald head covered by a gold plate and having blue eyes. She wears a white, gold, and black armored dress. She also dons her seemingly divine-like metallic headband known as the Crown of Kronika (also known as the Crown of Souls), her own talismanic treasure.

Personality[]

The Isle of Kronika

Lady Kronika floating outside her sacred namesake Isle.

A tyrant and a perfectionist, Kronika herself is very manipulative, and very subductive to her enemies her power is manipulating over time over and over trying to make a perfect timeline. Having a calm attitude, she manages to convince several characters to join her side for the promise of giving them perfect lives when she reboots time. However, Kronika is lying to her pawns, and is also very cruel, causing most of the bad events in the series and is willing to destroy anyone who doesn't follow orders or becomes dangerous. Disliking lower beings due to their habit of changing history in ways she doesn't want, she loathes Raiden and sees Liu Kang as either a tool or a threat. While she was once sane, her constant desire for the perfect timeline drove her to madness.

Kronika also shows that she is willing to do anything to do reshape time in a way that suits her. She not only doesn't care about her children, but she lied to everyone working with her that she will change their lives for the better if they remain loyal. She does this by convincing them that if they join her, she will ensure their victory regardless of the consequences. This lack of detachment as mentioned above, makes her actions even worse. Not only did she wipe out various timelines while killing millions of people, but her cold exterior makes her come off as someone who puts her vision above everything else. Thus, she surpasses most if not all of the villains in evil. Kronika as a whole, is nothing more than a monster who will do anything to make sure her perfect vision comes to life. Even during the climax, she proves that she is nothing more than a heartless tyrant with little regard for life. She abused her power and used others as pawns all so she could create the ideal timeline. This makes her possibly the most nightmarish villain in the series. All this being said, even she was disgusted at how easily Shang Tsung backstabbed his allies, and was proud to be a Titan, being defiant to the sorcerer even to the end.

Powers and Abilities[]

The Hourglass of Kronika

The Hourglass

Sculpting the Sands of Time requires great power and skill. You have neither, Liu Kang. You may be a god, but I am a Titan!
~ Kronika

Being a member of Titan, a race of super beings that transcend even Elder Gods, Kronika possesses powers normal humans cannot fully comprehend. She is able to manipulate time and space itself, Kronika is currently the most powerful character in Mortal Kombat. Using her time manipulation, she can stop, slow down, speed up, rewind time to those around her, erase people from existence, summon multiple versions of people across time, fuse two points in space-time, and rewrite time. Dwarfing the Elder Gods in power, Kronika is also able to manipulate sand and attack with it, such as turning it into powerful glass weapons or raining it down on her foes. She can also transform into sand or energy to avoid attacks, psychically manipulate others, summon warriors to fight for her, command animals, and rain down fireballs. She is immune to Fatal Blows. When Raiden attacked her, she used the sand to freeze him from time itself and his allies.

However, her power requires sources to use, such as the Jinsei or the sacred Crown of Kronika. Without it, her powers become vastly limited. Kronika is also vulnerable to fire due to being made out of the sands of time, which proved to be her downfall when Fire God Liu Kang burned Kronika with enough intense heat to turn her into glass. Kronika as expected from someone who has control over time, is one of the smartest characters in the franchise. Despite many of the villains she recruits being geniuses, she plays them and Future Jax like a fiddle. This along with her powers make her almost unstoppable as even the Elder Gods weren't aware of her scheme.

Powers[]

  • Titan Physiology: Kronika is a Titan, a being who is far more powerful than all the Elder Gods combined.
    • Superhuman Strength
    • Superhuman Speed: Kronika's speed is incalculable. She can move so fast that it is hard to catch her in order to land an attack on her.
    • Superhuman Agility
    • Superhuman Stamina: Kronika can fight anyone for a large amount of time without showing any exhaustion.
    • Superhuman Durability: While she can be injured or even killed if damaged badly enough, she is physically more durable than any Earthrealm or Outworld native. As such, Fatal Blows are completely ineffective against her.
    • Superhuman Endurance
    • Regenerative Healing Factor: Kronika can heal from attacks and other attacks very quickly.
    • Superhuman Senses: Kronika can sense beings from other realms and possibly realties.
    • Flight: Kronika is able to fly.
    • Immortality: Kronika has lived for eons and was the creator of the Mortal Kombat universe in the beginning.
  • Magic: Kronika possesses the ability to manipulate time and space on a scale previously unseen before in the history of the Mortal Kombat franchise. Her demonstrated power over time includes stopping the flow of time itself around those save herself or anyone else she includes. She can summon multiple individuals from across the entire history of time itself and bring them to the present era, even condense two entirely different points in space and time together, allowing doppelganger of the same person to exist and occupy the same space at the same time. As a Titan, a powerful being above the likes of Elder Gods, she possesses her own powers as well. Kronika can manipulate sand for offensive measures, such as summoning sandstorms, blasting sand beams and turn sand into glass to create blades sharp enough to decapitate a person. For defensive means, she can turn into sand or energy to become intangible and impervious to attacks or create fields that damage her opponent over time. Kronika also has access to psychic powers such as telekinesis capable of ripping people in half or flaying them whole with a gesture. She can also summon other warriors to aid her; presumably, these warriors are pulled from alternate timelines, and obey without question. However, these warriors are not nearly as strong as their equivalents in the "main" timeline. She also seems able to command the local wildlife to aid her - as she does with a dinosaur - and even rain destructive fireballs upon foes. Her most potent attack, however, is a powerful energy beam that not only inflicts terrible wounds but traps the victim in a temporal bubble, unable to move and at her mercy for several seconds. She can also use her time powers offensively by firing projectiles that wildly rewind, forward and stop others in time and can make these projectiles home into her target to lessen the chances of dodging them. The effects of her time merging can also erase beings from existence (such as Dark Raiden) but this effort requires a lot of energy to use.

Abilities[]

  • Master Combatant: In combat, she improvises a fighting style by using her time-based abilities combined with hand-to-hand combat. She has been able to fight against the combined power of Shang Tsung, Fujin, and Raiden. She also has been able to win against Fire God Liu Kang for a brief time in the final battle until she was led to her defeat.
  • Weaponry: She can use things around her to use as weapons and can use a dagger.
  • Genius Level Intelligence: Kronika is known to be very smart in many ways. She succeeded in recruiting the Revenants from the Netherrealm, Shao Kahn and his servants from Outworld, and even some Earthrealmers like Kano, Erron Black, and Jax Briggs. She also is capable of manipulation. She has manipulated Jax's suffering and pain to persuade him to help her succeed while also not revealing her to be Shinnok's mother as well. She can also plan strategies as well.
    • Leadership
    • Tactical Analysis
    • Manipulation
    • Deception
  • Indomitable Will: Kronika has an obsession of equalizing good and evil and is willingly able to manipulate events in order to achieve her golden balance. Besides her burning desire to achieve her balance, she also shows to care deeply for her children Shinnok and Cetrion.

Trivia[]

  • Kronika can be considered the main antagonist of the entire Mortal Kombat franchise. As it is through her command over her children, Shinnok and Cetrion, that the realms are always in conflict with each other, and constantly restarting time to continue the cycle. Though she only makes her debut in the 11th game of the series, she is more of a Bigger Bad.
  • Linking the console and mobile versions of Mortal Kombat 11 allows the player to have Kronika as the announcer.
  • She has the city Chicago Illinois erased from history.
  • Kronika is the first final boss in a Mortal Kombat game who is female.
  • Kronika is the first unplayable boss in the series since Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat (2011), barring Corrupted Shinnok in Mortal Kombat X.
  • Kronika's name could have been inspired by Kronos, the Greek God of Time.
  • Kronika's time altering powers affect all the non-canon Arcade Ladder endings in every game, as the ones that are never canon as actually did happen in timelines that she later destroyed.
  • In a flashback, Raiden states that her timeline experiments includes Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, showing that she is aware of the DC Comics universe.
  • Lady Kronika

    Kronika

Kronika is currently the only known character to be a Titan.
  • Kronika's fatality, ripping the opponent in half repeatedly, is the only fatality in Mortal Kombat 11 that does not end in a freeze frame.
  • Even though she was defeated, Kronika was partially successful in her goals, as she did reset the timeline wiping out all the events in the franchise from existence before Fire God Liu Kang killed her.
    • However, Liu Kang would be the one to shape the new timeline instead of Kronika.
  • When she is talking with Raiden in the original MK11 story mode, there is a subtle moment where she chuckles evilly, implying that she does enjoy wiping out timelines.
  • Kronika is one of the less popular villains of the franchise, being regarded by the MK fandom as only existing so the developers had an excuse to reboot the series once again. They also dislike her for her lack of depth, questionable decisions, and generic goals.
