Lucifer is the main antagonist of Saint Seiya: Warriors of the Holy Final Battle, the fourth movie of the Anime and Manga series Saint Seiya. He is a fallen angel of God and the supreme overlord of hell and demons. He is served by four of his strongest servants (Beelzebub, Astaroth, Eligor, and Moah), and he's also supported by three of the Saints' previous enemies, Abel, Poseidon, and Eris. His purpose is to make Athena sacrifice herself and then rule the whole universe alongside the three deities.

He was voiced by Masane Tsukayama.

Appearance[]

Lucifer is a pretty tall humanoid being with an androgynous look. He has white icy eyes and white hair. On his head he wears a black tiara that resembles a bat. Most of his body is hidden by a long black coat, but he seems to wear a small armor under it. He also wear two fingerless gloves on his hands (which have long nails) and two long iron backs colored in white and gold. Due to his angel nature, he also has two feathered wings on his back. When his backstory is seen, he still had the same appearance, but his colors were more brighter and whiter.

Personality[]

Much like other transpositions of the biblical character, Lucifer is a sadistic and cruel being that has no regards on every living beings' suffering, as he cares only to become stronger and be the supreme overlord of all the universe. His actions are purely moved by feelings of hatred and vengeance towards the other deities for what they have done to him in the past. He also enjoys seeing other people getting tortured or massacred to death. This can be seen when he lets the three fallen deities throw catastrophes of all types, leading to absolute death and destruction or when he makes Athena walk over a staircase full of thorns. Despite this, he sometimes decides to give second chances as long as some conditions are satisfied, like when he offers Athena to sacrifice herself for the sake of the world. He never fights openly and instead, he rather acts in a cowardly way, by attacking his enemies remotely or blackmailing them.

Biography[]

Lucifer was once one of God's most benevolent angels and he was standing among the closest ones to him. It was said that he was once a beautiful being, but he was corrupted by his lust of power and tried to overthrow his creator and take over the cosmos. After his failed rebellion, Lucifer and other angels who helped him were banished to the depths of hell, where he became the lord of all demons and ruler of the underworld. Despite this, he continued to conquer the universe and ended up being stopped various times by different beings like the archangel Michael and the Chinese deity Mārīcī. Among the deities who opposed him there was also Athena, and Lucifer ended up holding a huge grudge towards her.

In the 20th Century, Lucifer is able to convince Abel, Poseidon and Eris, three deities who got defeated by Athena and her Saints, to use their powers to give him a physical manifestation, so that he can appear on the Earth alongside four of his loyal demon servants Beelzebub, Astaroth, Eligor and Moah. When he comes to earth, he starts an invasion to the Sanctuary, making his servants get rid of the Gold Saints and then personally decapitates the tall statue symbol of Athena. After that, he uses his powers to create a palace of his own and then lets Abel, Poseidon and Eris to initiate cataclysms to destroy the earth.

He later returns to the sanctuary where he meets Saori, the reincarnation of Athena and three of his Saints, Seiya, Hyoga and Shun, and explains them that he intends to conquer all of existence with the help of the three deities they've defeated in the past. Seiya and the others try to attack him, but they get inevitably taken down by his demons in a manner of seconds. He then decides to give Athena one last chance to save the world, by making her sacrifice herself in a torture at his palace, so that he can get his revenge on her for when she stopped him in the past. Athena accepts without hesitation, and the Saints follow her worried for her fate.

While Lucifer makes Athena walk through a long and tortuous path, the Saints engage battle with his Servants, managing to defeat three of them (Astaroth gets defeated by Shiryu, Moah gets defeated by Hyoga and Eligor almost kills shun but gets eliminated by Ikki) leaving only the strongest one, Beelzebub, on his watch, while Seiya follows Saori

In the end, Athena reaches the top of the palace, where Lucifer awaits to make her walk through a stairway full of thorns, so that she can give her life to save the world. Seiya and the rest of the Saints try to save her, but they get blocked and attacked by Beelzebub, determined to make sure that the sacrifice takes place (though Ikki is directly attacked by Lucifer). Seeing the efforts of her warriors, Athena remembers what her role is supposed to be and tries to attack Lucifer, but her attempt is futile, as Lucifer easily counterattacks her and deprives her of her scepter. Through his sheer determination, Seiya combines his cosmo with those of the other Saints to reach the Seventh Sense and call the Gold Cloth of Sagittarius, becoming more powerful. Beelzebub tries to stop him, but he gets inevitably defeated by Seiya's most powerful attack, Pegasus Sui Sei Ken. After the last demon is out of game, Seiya takes the golden bow, ready to throw one last attack to end the battle, but Lucifer takes Saori as an hostage to make sure Seiya hits her instead of Lucifer. At first, Seiya is hesitant despite Athena tells him to attack either way, so the boy decides to raises his cosmo to find the hope to win. His cosmo his reached by those of the other Gold Saints (both the alive ones and the Cloths of the deceased ones), and all the twelve golden constellations shine on the ecliptic of the sun, destroying the darkness and leaving Lucifer more vulnerable. Thanks to this, Seiya finds the determination to throw the arrow. Despite Lucifer begs to be spared, the Gold Saints launches the attack. Saori moves away in the last seconds, making the fallen angel to get stabbed in the chest by the arrow. With his death, both his spirit and those of Abel, Poseidon and Eris return to hell and his palace gets destroyed, making the earth saved again by Athena and her Saints.

Trivia[]

  • Lucifer was originally supposed to be the final antagonist of the anime version of Saint Seiya. Between the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s, the original series's author Masami Kurumada ended up arguing several times with Toei Animation, thus making the adaptation of the last arc of the manga, the Hades arc, basically impossible. Due to this, Toei Animation still wanted to give the anime a proper ending, and made this fourth movie. When the anime adaptation of the Hades arc actually started in 2002, the movie and its villain became non-canon even in the anime continuity;
    • Due to this, Lucifer can be considered a counterpart of Hades (Saint Seiya) of the canon continuity, as both of them hold a grudge against Athena due to her stopping them in ancient times.
  • Like it's showed in the settei Golden Jump selection 2, Lucifer's design was originally supposed to resemble a more demonic nature, with him having bat-like wings. In the settei, he can also be seen without coat and without wings.
  • Lucifer's backstory is mostly faithful to the one described in the bible, with the exception of the insertion of deities from other mythologies like the greek one and the Chinese one. His fight with the archangel Michael is described in the book of the apocalypse, where Satan was described as a large dragon.
  • During his backstory sequence, the images where Lucifer is shown getting defeated by other beings are really existing paintings and sculptures. In the movie these images are modified to make Lucifer the one get attacked by those beings (while in the painting of the archangel Michael it was still Lucifer but with a different look, on the sculpture of Athena and the painting of Mārīcī there was someone else)
  • Lucifer's demon servants' names (except Moah) are based on demons that belong to the Ars Goetia family. According to the legends, Beelzebub in particular was among the strongest one, thus making him the strongest Lucifer's demon in the movie. Moah is instead inspired by Anglomois, a demon mentioned by Nostradamus that would have brought the end of the world in the year 1999
  • In the movie, it is said that Poseidon is one of the three deities that were killed in the past by the Saints. But this is a mistake, since in the original series, Poseidon was just sealed back inside his amphora.
