I have sinned, betrayed innocent blood. Take the money back! I don't want it!
~ Judas trying to repent for betraying Jesus.

Judas Iscariot is one of two secondary antagonists (alongside Caiaphas) of the 2004 Mel Gibson film The Passion of the Christ and is based on the biblical figure of the same name. Judas betrayed Jesus Christ to the authorities, setting in motion events that would culminate in the death and resurrection of Christ.

Biography[]

Judas is first seen in a temple prior to midnight where a group of Pharisees headed by Caiaphas offer him thirty pieces of silver to lead them and the authorities to Jesus' location. After informing them and the temple guards/soldiers that he would kiss the one who was Jesus, that was the man that they should arrest, Judas then leads the soldiers/temple guards to the forested Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus and some of his disciples were spending the evening. He walked up to Jesus, and kissed him, to which Jesus asked if Judas intended to betray him with such act.

The soldiers then move to arrest Jesus, wherein a violent brawl occurs; Peter, having known of the plot to kill Jesus, attempted to prevent the arrest, wherein he drew a dagger and attacked Malchus, the commander of the guards and a servant of Caiaphas, cutting off his ear. Jesus healed the young man before being led away. Judas followed and watched in horror as the troops began to torture Jesus. Satan also took the opportunity to torment Judas for his actions during this time.

Regretting what he had done Judas tried to return the 30 pieces of silver that the high priests had given him beforehand. The high priests refused to take back the money so Judas threw the money into the temple.

Satan sends a group of demons to torment Judas. The demons took the form of children and chased him away from the city of Jerusalem at dawn break. Reaching a nearby hill, Judas found a tree, where a dead donkey lies near its roots. He took a length of a rope from the dead donkey, climbed the tree where he tied the rope to a breanch and created a noose out of the other length, which he tied to his neck. Judas then committed suicide by jumping off the branch, hanging from it.
