Paul and Johnny Mulford are minor antagonists in the crime-drama TV series Criminal Minds. They are sadistic thrill-killers that appear as the main antagonists of the Season 2 episode Open Season.
Paul is portrayed by Jim Parrack and Johnny is portrayed by Jake Richardson.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Paul and Johnny were born in Boise, Idaho. At young ages, they lost their parents and were put into the care of their uncle Joseph Mulford, a former war veteran and secret serial killer. Growing up in Boise, Joe taught Paul and Johnny everything, including how to navigate the Boise National Forest and how to hunt. While initially teaching them how to hunt animals, Joe eventually taught the brothers his secret hobby of kidnapping motorists, taking them to the forest, and hunting them down.
Joe would eventually die and leave everything to the brothers. They took over the auto shop and would search Highway 2 for motorists whose cars had broke down. Once they found one, they abducted the driver and towed the victim's vehicle back to the station, where they hid the car in a shipping container. After that, they took their victim to the forest, released them and allowed the victim to get a head start. The victim would survive for days on the run, sustaining multiple injuries, until the brothers would catch up to them and finish them off with arrows.
"Open Season"[]
The BAU are called in after Alex Harrison, a victim, is found killed in the woods. While the team works with the local police to find the killers, Paul and John pick up Bobbi Baird on Highway 2 when her car breaks down and release her into the woods. As she runs, she comes into contact with two camping couples. Realizing they won't be able to keep track on so many at one time, Paul kills one of the couples. The other one, Luke Hamilton and his wife/fiancée Heather, flees together with Bobbi. Eventually, Luke is killed by Johnny. Bobbi then takes a pocket knife from Luke's jacket and keeps running with Heather. Understanding that they are only giving the Mulford brothers what they want by running, they stop and set up an ambush which resulted in Johnny killing Heather before being stabbed in the stomach multiple times by Bobbi.
Paul leaves Johnny by a fireplace and leaves to kill Bobbi. At the time, the local police and the BAU have tracked them down and follow the trail to Johnny, who they believe to be another victim. Realizing that he had been stabbed, not shot with an arrow, Gideon tells him that other law enforcement officers are looking for Paul with an order to shoot if necessary. Johnny then pleads that they don't kill Paul, as he is all he had, and tells them the direction Paul has gone. At the same time, Bobbi ambushes Paul as he unknowingly approaches her hiding place, jumping on him from a tree branch and stabbing him in the back twice. Paul gets up and shoots an arrow at her, but misses in the midst of his pain. When he aims again, Morgan arrives and tells him to stand down. When Paul refuses, Morgan shoots and kills him. Meanwhile, Johnny overhears the gunshots and starts grieving for his brother. Moments later, Gideon watches as he bleeds out from his stab wounds and dies.

- The Mulford Brothers are inspired by multiple real-life and fictional criminals:
- Robert Hansen, a.k.a. "The Butcher Baker", a serial killer/rapist of women in prostitution, who were kidnapped, raped, tortured, and then sent off into wilderness to be forced to run until they were humted down and shot.
- Ivan Milat, a.k.a. "The Backpacker Killer", an Australian serial killer of backpackers who were all found buried in the woods after he kidnapped and violent murdered them all.
- John Allan Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, a.k.a. "The Beltway Snipers", a serial killing duo of pedestrians, the older father figure teaching the teenage pupil, with the leader of the two committing most of the murders and the follower coached into some murders of his own.
- General Zaroff, the villain of the 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game. Like the brothers, Zaroff hunted humans for sport in a jungle, viewing it as the ultimate challenge.
- The Odet Family, the main antagonists of the Wrong Turn franchise, a family of inbred serial killers and cannibals in the West Virginia mountains, who target camper and climbers by means of booby traps, carjacking, and hunting weapons, including arrows, to est their remains.
