Rita Repulsa, the self-proclaimed Empress of Evil, is an evil space witch and galactic conqueror and the leader of the Evil Space Aliens who sought to take over Earth and the secondary antagonist of the Power Rangers franchise. She and her husband, Lord Zedd, are the archenemies of Zordon and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

She was originally played by the late Machiko Soga in Season 1, who played her counterpart Witch Bandora in Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger as well as Queen Hedrian in Denshi Sentai Denizman and Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan. Carla Perez played her from Season 2 onwards and was voiced by Barbara Goodson throughout most of her appearances, who also voiced Mother Talzin in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In Power Rangers Mystic Force, she was played again by Soga and voiced by Susan Brady. Goodson would return to reprise her role as Rita in Once & Always and Brady would voice her once again for the finale of Power Rangers Cosmic Fury.

Biography

Past

Rita Repulsa was an intergalactic sorceress who journeyed throughout the universe causing chaos and mischief with her army of monsters and dark magic. She eventually joined Lord Zedd's army who were later forcibly annexed into the United Alliance of Evil because Zedd feared Dark Specter but Lord Zedd was allowed to continue his conquests. Some 10,000 years ago, Zedd sent Rita and a group of lesser minions to fight Zordon and the planet Earth since he was busy with his own attacks. After many years of conflict, Rita lured her foe to a supposed peace talk where she managed to trap him in an other dimensional time warp. However she and her minions were trapped themselves by Zordon in a Space Dumpster.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

After 10,000 years of imprisonment, the Evil Space Aliens are freed by a pair of astronauts who find her dumpster on the Moon in 1993. Now free to take control of Earth, Rita re-establishes herself on the forgotten Moon Palace where Finster begins making new Putty Patrollers and the first batch are sent to harass five teenagers summoned by Zordon. They are successful and more attack the city of Angel Grove with Goldar but the five teenagers become the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and repel the initial attack. From this point onwards, Rita begins sending down monsters and Putties to attack the planet but this fails every time. Rita even creates her own evil Power Ranger (Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger), but he turns good and she is faced with an even greater challenge. However Rita later takes away his powers with a green candle that drains his powers when it burns out. However, she still doesn't get back the powers when Tommy passes his Dragon Coin (the source of his powers) to Jason. Another of Rita's more inspired plans is to capture the parents of Angel Grove to force the Power Rangers to hand over their Power Coins. Even after getting the Power Coins, she still doesn't return the parents but Tommy is re-powered and foils this plan.

Disgusted with Rita's failures, Lord Zedd eventually comes to the Moon to take over from his servant by modifying Rita's fortress and taking her minions under his wing. He then banishes her into another dumpster, leaving her shrunken and helpless and casts her into space. Eventually, Rita's dumpster finds its way back to Earth where it is found by Bulk and Skull. She attempts to tell them the Power Rangers' secret identities but the Rangers stop her and send her back into space. Rita returns later when her dumpster crashes on the Moon and is destroyed whereupon she gets in contact with Finster, who grows her back to normal size and makes her look younger. He also gives Rita a love potion that she manages to get into Zedd's system, making him fall in love with her and instantly marry her. She plans to get rid of Zedd so that she can take control of his empire but abandons these plans when their wedding plan fails and she actually falls in love with him.

Soon after Rita marries Zedd, her brother Rito Revolto comes to help them battle the Power Rangers. In an attempt to defeat the Rangers, she sends in a girl under her control named Katherine Hillard to spy on the Rangers and help bring them down but the girl turned on Rita. Goldar later removes the Love Potion from Zedd's insides only to find out that it had worn off long ago and that Zedd and Rita truly loved each other now rather than her prior planning to betray him. Later Rita's father, Master Vile, came to the moon seeking the Zeo Crystal and he helps her and Zedd to battle the Rangers. Vile leaves after turning back time in Angel Grove, reverting the Power Rangers to children which proves to be extremely helpful to Rita and Zedd. They manage to get their hands on the Power Coins and destroy them along with the Command Center.

Power Rangers Zeo

Whilst the Evil Space Aliens are celebrating however, the Moon Palace is attacked by the Machine Empire's Quadrafighters. With no form of air defence, they are forced to abandon the gutted Moon Palace and flee in Serpentera to the M-51 Galaxy much to Zedd's misery. Much later, whilst studying for a test, Adam ends up falling asleep and waking up in a strange dream world where his other Power Rangers have become weird parodies of classic movie monsters. Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd appear at the very start to cryptically warn Adam about the new world although the real versions do not appear.

However, after the Varox Bounty Hunters shoot down Trey of Triforia on Aquitar, Rita and Zedd return to Earth because the Machine Empire have become an intergalactic laughing stock for repeatedly failing to defeat the Zeo Rangers. Reclaiming Rito and Goldar and operating out of an RV, Rita and Zedd use a series of plots to prevent the robots from emerging the victors and even help the Rangers at one point so as to foil a plot by Prince Gasket where he brainwashes Tommy into thinking he is the leader of the Machine Empire. Eventually, Zedd feigns a surrender by using a bomb to blow up the Royal House of Gadgetry, leaving the empire to crumble. With their mission complete, the Evil Space Aliens go on holiday before returning to again menace the Earth. Despite this however, they are forced to retire from villainy before they can return because Rita gets pregnant.

Turbo

After the space pirate Divatox finds herself having trouble taking down the Turbo Rangers, she calls Rita to try and get advice on how to fight them. She simply cackles and says that, if she knew how to do that, she wouldn't be listening to Zedd's snoring and tells Divatox to flee.

Rita and Zedd are later seen in the Millennium Message that Divatox tricks the Blue Senturion into showing her; revealing that she will work with the rest of the United Alliance of Evil to help conquer the universe much to her disgust.

Power Rangers in Space

Rita and Zedd are later forced to attend the United Alliance of Evil's meeting on the Cimmerian Planet to celbrate Dark Specter's conquest of Eltar. Before the meeting begins, she has a run in with Divatox who brags about defeating the Turbo Rangers. Rita in turn sarcastically tells her that she should not be so certain of this. After a Red Ranger is discovered at the meeting and escapes, she volunteers to go after him but Astronema is chosen instead.

Later that year, Rita and Zedd lead their forces in a planet in the M-51 Galaxy and manage to defeat Trey of Triforia. When they learn of Dark Specter's death at the hands of Darkonda, Rita and Zedd decide to defect from the UAE but Zordon's Energy Wave washes over the planet. This process destroys their entire army but Rita and Zedd are spared, being turned into ordinary humans that take the opportunity to dance. Unbeknownst to anyone however, although Rita had been purged of her evil, her evil essence persists and is merely scattered throughout the universe in the form of particles.

Dino Thunder

Rita Repulsa is featured in a chronicle of Power Ranger history compiled by Tommy Oliver shortly after he formed the Dino Rangers which is found by the nascent Ranger team in the Dino Lab.

Mystic Force

Rita as the Mystic Mother.

Rita regains her magical powers, but this time it is from good magic and she becomes the Mystic Mother, Empress of Good Magic and leader of the Mystic Ones. She is apparently the one who gave the Mystic Force Rangers their link to the Morphin Grid and, when Octomus the Master returns, he attacks the Mystic Mother. She is unable to stop him, but survives the battle and helps the Mystic Rangers to defeat the Master.

Beast Morphers

They've all wanted to take the Rangers' power and rule the universe. And now that you've wrapped it up with a ribbon, some evil mind will try to take it again and when they come, this place? Due to being long since redeemed, Rita does not appear physically but is mentioned alongside Galvanax and Sledge when Mayor Daniels expresses concern over the idea pf using Morph-X as the new power source because there have been several villains that have attacked the Earth just for the Rangers' powers.

Rita is later shown via stock footage after Scrozzle proposes resurrecting Lord Zedd for Evox's plans. The villains appear to agree to these plans until Roxy reminds everyone of what Zedd and Rita did to the Royal House of Gadgetry.

Once & Always

In 2022, Billy attempts to reconstruct Zordon's essence but gets Rita's instead. Taking over Alpha 8 as her vessel and morphing it into a new body, Rita is effectively reborn but devoid of goodness and any redeeming qualities that the original possessed, effectively a separate entity to the latter who had long became Mystic Mother. During a fight on the cliff-side, she overwhelms Billy with Putties until the other Rangers arrive. During the resulting fight, she fights Billy who damages her face so she tries to kill him but ends up murdering Trini before leaving. However, she lies to the Rangers that she is going to the Dark Dimension, whilst secretly returning to her long abandoned Palace where she resurrects the long dead Mighty Minotaur and Snizzard to act as her muscle.

A year after the death of Trini, Rita confronts the Rangers by Trini's grave and has everyone besides Billy and Zack turned into figurines as the two escape in a new RadBug. Despite the minor set-back, she returns to the Moon only to need more energy as the power drain would take too long. As such, Rita launches simultaneous Putty attacks across the Earth to draw out the Power Rangers. When an attack at the Youth Center lures out the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers again (made up of Billy and Zack as well as Rocky and Katherine), Rita sends her monsters to capture them since they will be the last bits of power she will need only for them to fail again.

When Minh confronts the monsters and tries to morph again, Rita confronts her and she tries to avenge her mother only for Rita to defeat the Praying Mantis style before seemingly killing Minh. After freeing her monsters, she confronts the Rangers in the Moon Palace after they deduce her plan which she reveals but Billy tries to then destroy the Snizzard so they can free the captive Rangers without hurting them. As she tries to kill Billy like she did Trini though, Minh takes the blast instead and seemingly kills her but she remembers her mother's past and gains the Yellow Ranger powers so the team morphs and fights Rita and her minions. When Kat tries to destroy the console though, Rita reminds her of what would happen to the captive Rangers before she grabs and enlarges the Snizzard to make it harder to destroy him.

However, with her back turned, Billy is able to impale Rita with his Power Lance and seemingly kill her before they destroy the Mighty Minotaur and summon the Dino Megazord. After the Minotaur's death though, Rita reboots and activates her machine which opens a portal back to the day of the dumpster with her even ignoring the Snizzard's death in her glee. Before she can help her younger self though, Minh pins Rita with the Power Daggers before Rocky and Billy free the Rangers and Kat obliterates the machine; bringing an end to Rita's plan. As the robot swears revenge, Zack obliterates Robot Rita Repulsa with a shot from his Power Axe cannon; avenging Trini and the countless innocents Rita Repulsa has ever hurt and bringing the reign of the space witch to an end once and for all.

Cosmic Fury

Later that year, Lord Zedd is been released from the Master Captivator after Bajillia Naire's death but ends up trapped with an illusion of Rita on the planet of Nibyo. Rita ends up demanding that he serve her hand and foot with the Nibyo Guardian noting that Zedd will remain trapped until he eventually redeems himself.

Personality

As the infamous intergalactic evil witch, Rita Repulsa's notoriety was matched only by her terrible temper and unpleasant attitude. She was prone to either cried out "I have a headache!", take her frustration out on her underlings, or even both when her latest scheme ended up foiled by the Rangers. She was also noted to be petty even in her youth as according to her brother Rito, Rita once set her own home ablaze just because she received a dragon instead of a planet to rule like she wanted for her birthday. Not even the serious and proud Goldar could stand her petty abuse, so much that he gladly sided with Lord Zedd when the latter arrived to take over her band and banish her for her constant failures, and regretted the idea of brainwashing Kimberly to be an evil queen like her only for the Pink Ranger to seemingly gain her petty personality as well (this was technically a ruse on Kimberly's part since the spell for the brainwashing only gave her Rita's outfit).

Rita genuinely loved her brother and father Master Vile, and sought to become an evil conqueror just like the latter. This motivated her in her fight against Zordon and later, his Power Rangers despite of them foiled her plans time and time again. Not even being sealed into a dumpster twice (first by Zordon, then by Lord Zedd) can take her resolve. Although Rita initially planned to overthrow Lord Zedd in revenge for banishing her, she came to love her superior and the two ended up become a couple as their feelings are mutual. Their ability to feel love was arguably one of reasons why she and Zedd ended up purified by Zordon's energy wave.

After becoming the Mystic Mother, Rita practised good magic and has since abandoned her evil ways. In an ironic twist of fate, she became a powerful yet wise figure who aided her own band of Power Rangers (Mystic Force Rangers) just as her past nemesis Zordon did to (Mighty Morphin Rangers) did. Despite this, traces of her past self still persist, notably her habit in crying out having a headache when things not going into the way she wanted.

When revived as Robo-Rita, she was a personification of only the original Rita's evil; making her more competent, similar to her husband Lord Zedd. Unlike her original incarnation, Robo-Rita cared little for her past self's MO and decided to take a great deal of time to plan her revenge. However, this didn't stop her from being petty and trying to kill a Ranger with a powerful magic blast, for damaging her face; arguably a fault enhanced by her lack of restraint. Despite this, Robo-Rita planned to go back in time and team up with her 1993 self and kill all Rangers before they ever got recruited. When defeated, Robo-Rita could only scream death threats that she couldn't carry through on.

Powers and Abilities

• Immortality: Despite usually appearing very old, Rita is over 10,000 years old but is just as capable as ever.
• Magic: Being a witch, Rita had immense magical powers although Lord Zedd, Master Vile and Dark Specter were all stronger than her.
  • Teleportation: Rita could teleport to any location at will by instantly vanishing into thin air.
    • Group Teleportation: Rita could also teleport her allies in and out of battle with her.
  • Storm Summoning: Rita could use her magic to summon storm clouds to cause earthquakes and shake up the surrounding area.
  • Brainwashing: By using her crystal ball and chanting, Rita was able to turn Tommy into her evil Green Ranger. Later she would use a similar hex on Kat, using her to infiltrate the heroes after gaining their trust.
  • Eclipse Generation: By using her crystal ball and chanting, Rita was able to cause an eclipse and slowly strip the Dino Megazord of its power.
  • Monster Transformation: By chanting and using her crystal ball, Rita could turn objects into "monsters" as seen when she turned Kimberly's grandmother's spinning wheel into the Wheel of Misfortune. In at least one case, she did so by accident, a misfire with her staff striking a brick wall and creating the Brick Bully. She could also use this power on humans, such as when she gave Kat the form of Katastrophe.
  • Ally Summoning: By using her crystal ball and chanting, Rita was able to summon Lokar and Mutitus to aid her in her plans.
  • Immobilization Beams: As seen during the battle against the Hatchasaurus, Rita could unleash red energy from her mouth to restrain the Dragonzord and render it helpless.
  • Building Movement: Arguably Rita's greatest demonstration of her magic was when she brought the Moon Palace from the Moon to Earth in the two-part episode "Doomsday."

Arsenal

The Magic Wand

• Magic Wand: Rita's signature weapon was a large gold-black magic wand that she could use either to cast spells or as a club to bludgeon her enemies.
  • Energy Beams: Rita could fire red lasers from her Magic Wand that were strong enough to obliterate her Dumpster and the Island of Illusion in an instant.
  • Monster Growth: Rita's signature ability where she could throw her wand to Earth to open a chasm from which the planet/moon's geothermal energy encase her monster and make them grow. This was usually accompanied by the phrase "Magic Wand, make my monster/Goldar grow" but not always.
  • Weapon Enchantment: Rita was able to enchant her weapons to be stronger and almost indestructible by using her Wand to blast it with a red energy beam as seen with the Knasty Knight's sword.
  • Teleportation Beams: Rita could fire green energy from her Wand to instantly teleport others as seen when she captured Tommy to turn him into her Green Ranger.
• Repulsascope: Rita usually used a magical telescope to observe what was happening on Earth. Despite looking like a normal telescope, it could zoom and focus exactly like a camera.

Powers and Abilities

• Strength: Robo-Rita was able to take down Minh with a single wand swing and flip Kat to the ground by thrusting her Wand.
• Genius Level Intellect: Despite her arrogance, Robo Rita was a very intelligent being as she was able to create a device capable of opening a time portal without any help.
• Teleportation: Rita could teleport to any location at will by instantly vanishing into thin air. Robo-Rita could teleport in enormous purple energy clouds.
• Skilled Fighter: Robo-Rita was an exceptionally good fighter, being able to overpower both Billy and three Power Rangers at once using just her Wand and bare hands.
• Reflexes: Robo-Rita was fast enough to catch Jason when the Snizzard threw him at her.
• Magic: Like her original self, Robo-Rita was a very skilled witch but was even more powerful and at least on par with Lord Zedd.
  • Weapon Summoning: After being created, Robo-Rita could summon her Magic Wand in a flash of black-purple energy.
  • Monster Creation: Robo-Rita was able to recreate the Mighty Minotaur and the Snizzard by herself without Finster's help.

Arsenal

• Magic Wand: Like her predecessor, Robo-Rita Repulsa wielded a gold-black magic wand but it was even more powerful.
  • Energy Beams: Robo-Rita could fire powerful orange-black energy streams from her Wand. These were strong enough to cause large explosions and send Billy and Zack flying backwards.
    • Shadow Energy Blast: Robo-Rita's most powerful attack where she would swing around her Wand to charge all of her energy into it before releasing a devastatingly powerful red energy beam surrounded by black mist-like energy at her enemies. This was able to obliterate Trini and would have killed Billy had Minh not taken the hit instead.
  • Teleportation Lightning: Rita could fire blue ligntning from her Wand to instantly teleport herself and others as seen after she killed Trini.
  • Energy Empowerment: Robo-Rita could charge her Wand up with purple energy to slash with great force. These were strong enough to knock each of the Rangers to the ground.
  • Tractor Beams: Robo-Rita could fire blue energy ropes from her Wand to entangle her enemies and throw them around as seen with Billy.
  • Monster Growth: Like before, Robo-Rita could throw her wand to make her monsters grow. Unlike before though, it created a small fissure which nonetheless large enough for required drawn geothermal energy to come out and enlarge the targeted monster.

Trivia

• Rita's last name Repulsa is derived from the word "repulsive."
• Barbara Goodson, who voiced Rita, got messed around with by Saban during pre-production of the show. She was given the part, and told to voice Rita like the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. She did, and got rejected since they decided to try to make Rita sound angrier, and rather than let Goodson try, they forced her to re-audition. According to her, she did and said "You want angry? I'LL SHOW YOU ANGRY!" in a variation of Rita's iconic voice without knowing she would have to do the part for seven years.
  • Due to labour laws in America, and both Mystic Force and Cosmic Fury being non-union New Zealand productions, Goodson was unable to reprise her as Rita in those seasons which was why Susan Brady was hired.
    • Barbara Goodson has mentioned going through a lot of water and cough drops to help her voice when she had to voice Rita since it was always high pitched and gravelly.
