The Nahual, also known as La Nahuala is the titular main antagonist in the 2007 animated film La Leyenda de la Nahuala, the first installament of the Las Leyendas film series.

She is a powerful and evil entity and  Years ago it took over the body of a cook woman, to carry out the planned sacrifice of 3 pure young souls, so could reign in the world of mortals and become unstoppable in Puebla.

She is voiced by Ofelia Medina.

Personality[]

When La Nahuala concludes its rite it will have eternal life; the dead will be their slaves and the living will be their food. It is the cycle of La Nahuala, it feeds on souls, it removes the shell and swallows them. Every soul that stalks is its slave.
~ Xochitl talking about La Nahuala.

Nahuala was very ruthless. She had no care for anyone but herself, she had no qualms with using people as slaves and murdering even children. She shown absolutely no remorse for her vile actions such as murders of Xóchitl and Teodora Villavicencio, with her only real regret being not killing Toñita San Juan once and for all. Nahuala is a master manipulator, as she was able to manipulate Santos Machorro into being the primary worker, doing much of the dirty work while she rested in the manor. Nahuala attempted to turn Leo against his brother, but his kind heart stalwart and he refused to turn his back on Nando.

Appearance[]

Nahuala fire

Xochitl made a fire figure that describes the inhuman nature of Nahuala.

Similarly, it is seen as a type of canine without skin on the body with a redhead and hairy on the back. Have two extensions that look like snake tails. And purple eyes. In his pointy ears he uses gold-pierced hoops, occupying some bracelets of the same material. Around the neck they decorate a pile of orange artificial feathers with yellow, and others more from behind, but these are authentic (this would be known as the animal form of Nahuala).

Its humanoid appearance has the aspect related to a jaguar with orange skin and slim body. Having a bright red eyes. Claws with elongated fingers. He has the same feathers, gold bracelets and rings as in his previous form. In his clothing, although now she walks with a few tattered skirts without her feet showing.

By having Mrs. Machorro's body, and in the decades that are passing her, its physical aspect indicates traces of old age. Its hair is in a ragged and disordered state. Clothing is deteriorated, putting on a rosy brown tone poncho and a transparent violet veil. Use as accessories, a golden bracelets, pendants and the Miquiztli Medallion.

Biography[]

Miquiztli medallion

The Miquiztli Medallion

Background[]

Not much is known about her origins since it is never clear how she became a witch, except for one thing, according to Nando's words, she lived 500 years ago in the pre-hispanic era thanks to the fact that she prolonged her life with the black magic. According to what she had mentioned in her ritual, it is likely that she was part of a clan of sorcerers who practiced nahualism and worshiped the goddess Meztli.

Going to the post-conquest Spain period, after the settlement of Puebla, La Nahuala had discovered the city that was established in the limits of indigenous territory, acquiring a magical amulet that is known by the name of Miquiztli Medallion: that served to absorb the souls of the living. Making use of the medallion, she would have killed / devoured the inhabitants of the city to make them her servants, and her next step would be to sacrifice three innocent children with which she would become unbeatable.

Las Leyendas: El Origen[]

La Nahuala does not physically appear and is not mentioned in the spin-off prequel despite The Old Manor being present a few decades after being in her possession. At the end of the movie, Mrs. San Juan indirectly mentions La Nahuala when she finds her sons Leo (still as a baby) and Nando in The Old Manor, telling them that she had warned them not to come to such a dangerous place.

La Leyenda de la Nahuala[]

Manor Tragedy[]

The legend begins in the city of Puebla de los Angeles, where "The Day of the Dead" is being celebrated on November 2, 1755. In the old one of the most important families in Puebla (the Villavicencios) lived in a mansion on "Calle de la Nahuala", who had gathered for dinner on the day of the dead that year. While the family cook was preparing dinner, a nahual attacked her, turning her body into La Nahuala, who later killed everyone present in the dining room by ripping the meat from her bones through a curse on the food.

Nahuala evil grin

La Nahuala grabbing Toñita by the neck to be able to sacrifice her as the third innocent soul and evil grin.

La Nahuala intended to use the souls of three girls to cast a spell that would give her youth and eternal power. The three girls to be sacrificed were: Xóchitl, a domestic worker, Teodora, the only daughter of the Villavicencio family, and Toñita San Juan, a friend of Theodora. A young Fray Godofredo, accompanied by some indigenous shamans, went to stop the ritual of the Nahuala, who managed to kill Xóchitl and Teodora, but Toñita San Juan managed to confront the Nahuala and snatch the Miquiztli Medallion from her. Fray Godofredo and aztecs shamans managed to stop Nahuala's body but her spirit took over the mansion. Toñita San Juan and the son of the woman possessed by the nahual managed to save themselves. Since then, the Old Manor was closed and legend has it that La Nahuala catches anyone who is surprised by the night near the manor.

In representation of this macabre event, they named the crossing that leads to the mansion as the "Calle de la Nahuala", because it is there where it appears to collect the lives of residents in Puebla.

New Fire[]

The Nahuala killed a lot of people, but it was stopped, since then, their spirit and that of all those who killed, are there locked up. The legend says that if the night catches you near the old house, the spirit of Nahuala will catch you.
~ Nando telling the history to his brother's Leo to scare him.

Fifty-two years later the story was told as soon as the generations passed, but Toñita San Juan and Friar Godofredo had preferred not to give clues to the subject, forgetting everything that happened in that enchanted place, while many alleged to see things out of the ordinary.

At mass, Leo is frightened by an older lady because he remembers that Nando told him that the Nahuala looked like an old lady, which causes him to lift Fray Godofredo's habit, so a lady faints when she sees the father's underwear. , which in turn causes a domino effect that ends up causing a disaster in the church.

Finishing the mass, Leo tells Fray Godofredo that he has behaved so strangely at mass because of the fear of the Nahuala; He tells him that the Nahuala lived a long time ago and she doesn't have to fear, and he also shows Leo a hot air balloon that he is making and invites him to fly when it is finished.

Returning to the bakery, Nana Dionisia asks Leo to take an order of bread to a house near the old house. When Leo, fearful, goes through the door of the abandoned mansion, Nando scares him and takes Leo's medallion. The medallion opens and the Nahuala pulls it into the house, leaving it locked up.

After avoiding his nanny Dionisia, Leo goes to Fray Godofredo and explains everything that happened with Nando; Seeing that it is something serious, they go to the library. In the library, Fray Godofredo takes out a book referring to the legend of the Nahuala. Fray Godofredo tells Leo that there is little time left because, with Nando, Nahuala can finish her ritual that same night. Leo, without listening to the Fray, enters the mansion but Godofredo cannot; in that, he sees that Santos is watching him, he questions him about why he gave the medallion to Leo but Santos hits him and leaves him unconscious.

Rite of the Night[]

Down the hall, he meets Xochitl, who tells him about the machinations of La Nahuala and his desire to want absolute power. Reaching the kitchen holding hands, a shadow of Nahuala herself watched them, causing sharps to attack them, and lava emerged from the pot. Luckily Xochitl saved Leo from leaving the door unharmed before the shadow grabbed him.

In the manor, Xóchitl and Teodora are called by the Nahuala and come possessed to the ritual. La Nahuala appears to Leo and gives him the option of leaving his annoying brother, reminding him how annoying he is, but Leo doesn't fall for the trap and decides to continue. Before the attack of the Nahuala, Leo accidentally falls into a secret door that leads him to the library. In the library, he meets Don Andrés, an old conqueror to whom everything seems dangerous, and Alebrije, a multicolored creature that claims to be a library Alebrije, since he knows a lot about it. After a series of tests carried out by Alebrije to verify that Leo is not the Nahuala in disguise, he gives him the instructions to defeat the Nahuala: recover the medallion, open it and face the Nahuala.

Leo falling into a secret passage in which would lead to the last upper floor of the manor, which surprisingly was captured by the Nahuala and would have prepared for the ritual.

Toñita sees that his two grandchildren do not return home for hours, and with the active Popocatepetl volcano, he got the impression that captives by the wicked witch, and those signs indicated that that same day is "new fire" again.

Leo falls through a tunnel that takes him directly to where the Nahuala is doing her ritual with the souls of Xóchitl, Teodora and Nando's body. Toñita San Juan and Dionisia enter the mansion, but Dionisia gets stuck in a door. Toñita arrives at Nahuala but she is beaten by Santos and leaves her unconscious. La Nahuala begins her ritual in the light of the moon, but Fray Godofredo covers the light with his balloon; before this, Santos collapses it with fireworks and Fray Godofredo is on top of the dome. When the Nahuala is completing her ritual, Fray Godofredo enters through the window and interrupts her, but is attacked by Santos. La Nahuala is about to kill Leo, but Fray Godofredo throws Tezcatlipoca's skull at her, which deflects the lightning with which she intended to kill Leo and falls on him.

La Nahuala tells Santos that she is no longer his mother and recovers her original bestial form, throwing the lightning at Leo again but this time Santos covers him with his body. Leo confronts Nahuala with her balero to distract her. Toñita tells Leo to use Tezcatlipoca's skull. Nando hands Leo the medallion and Leo throws the skull at him, destroying it along with the Nahuala, who is pretrified.

Being able to end the witch's curse, Friar Godofredo at last can rest in peace knowing that Leo saved the city from a terrible fate. A few moments later, covered with a sheet, the two Sugar Skulls frighten Nando making him believe that La Nahuala would return for revenge, in a joke mode.

Nahuala in la llorona intro

La Leyenda de la Llorona[]

La Nahuala does not appear physically but is a posthumous antagonist throughout the film.

She is present in the main theme that recapitulates the previous adventure where she haunts the manor and kidnaps Nando inside; being defeated when her plans are foiled by Leo San Juan.

The story that La Nahuala had terrorized Puebla and Leo San Juan would have stopped her, reached the ears of nearby cities. Father Telló, a priest from Xochimilco, learned of the feat experienced by Leo San Juan and wrote a letter to Fray Godofredo asking him to save his town from another supernatural being, La Llorona.
