Don't worry, we didn't eat them all. There's only so much bat that even I can stomach.
~ Goth

Goth is the main antagonist of the children's book series Silverwing and it's television adaptation. He is a cannibalistic vampyrum spectrum bat and the archenemy of Shade Silverwing.

In the Books[]

Silverwing[]

At some point before the events of the books, Goth had been captured by humans along with another spectral bat named Throbb, and they were both given bands. Goth was able to escape with Throbb's help but didn't understand the Northern stars and didn't know how to get home. He decided he would have to get a bat guide. He saves two bats, Shade and Marina, from an owl and pretends to be their friends, while in reality wanting to find Shade's colony and devour the entirety of them. Marina became suspicious of Goth's intentions, which Goth caught up on and commanded Throbb to kill her. However Throbb instead kills a bat he mistakes for Marina. Shade witnessed Throbb eat the bat and was able to escape from Goth with Marina when Goth and Throbb are tranquilized by humans.

Goth and Throbb escape and follow Shade and Marina. He eventually finds a colony of banded bats and devours them, taking their bands as trophies. He eventually captures Shade and Marina and attempts to get them to reveal the location of Shade's colony. However, Shade is able to trick Goth and Throbb into eating drugged induced plants, which causes they to hallucinate and lose consciousness, which Shade and Marina take the opportunity to escape.

Goth wakes up and he, along with Throbb, chase after Shade and Marina and finds them in a electric tower. He takes Marina's band and just as he captures Shade, the electricity hits his and Throbb's bands and electrocutes them, killing Throbb but Goth survives. After eating a bird he swears revenge on Shade and his colony.

Sunwing[]

Goth has been travelling South and enters a cave. There, he meets Cama Zotz, who instructs him to let himself be captured by humans. Uncertain but faithful to his god, he is captured and taken to a facility that straps explosives onto bats and drops them onto target cities.

Shade's colony, along with Marina and an owl named Orestes, arrive at the facility and end up at Goth's enclosure. Goth and Orestes are shocked and they are launched towards a city. Goth recognizes the jungle and arrives there, becoming king of the Spectral bats. Zotz tells Goth that in three days time, an eclipse will occur, and if Goth can sacrifice one hundred lives, Zotz will be freed.

Goth succeeds but fails to sacrifice them all due to Shade distracting him. Voxzaco tries to fix the mistake by dropping the explosive disk on the pyramid, but this causes an explosion, killing Goth.

Firewing[]

Goth woke up in the Underworld, suffering from a case of amnesia so bad that he couldn't even remember his name. He eventually met Throbb and made his way to Cama Zotz's pyramids, which is the home of all dead Vampyrum Spectrum. Goth climbed to the tip of the highest pyramid, where he met Phoenix, Zotz's chief excavator. Phoenix told him he was to be enslaved in Zotz's massive mines to the Upperworld. Goth tricked Phoenix into freeing him, and he flew off into the Underworld. Cama Zotz appeared and punished Goth by consigning him to swill in Cama Zotz's stomach once the tunnel to the Upperworld is finished. Goth convinces Cama Zotz to give him another chance by allowing him to go back to the Upperworld and undoing his mistakes. Cama Zotz agrees, but doesn't have the ability to send Goth back. The only way for Goth to leave the Underworld is if he steals the life of another being. Cama Zotz tells Goth that there's a living creature in the Underworld, Griffin, and leads Goth to him.

When Goth catches up to Griffin, he finds his strength severely diminished to the point that a newborn Silverwing can defeat him. Cama Zotz chastises him, and sends him on his way. Goth once again finds Griffin and Luna, this time in the memory cave. Before Goth could get close enough to Griffin to kill him, Shade appeared. Goth's old hate for Shade made him attack Shade instead of Griffin, and in the confusion, he and Shade were knocked into a river of an unknown black liquid. Goth dragged himself out and was back on the trail, catching up to Shade's group at the huge waterfall. He almost caught Griffin, ripping open his shoulder, but he was crushed by a massive downpour of water.

Cama Zotz decided that a different tactic was needed, so he disguised Goth as Griffin. Goth lured Shade to Cama Zotz, who would keep Shade from interfering with Goth's murder of Griffin. After killing Griffin and stealing his life force, Goth escaped the Underworld through the tree to find a pyramid and restart Cama Zotz's religion.

In the TV Series[]

As with the novels, Goth is the main antagonist of the show, along with Throbb. a cannibal bat from a laboratory. Seeing a leaf coming of the air duct, he escapes the lab by breaking through the grille.

Goth spots 2 pigeons and a rat, and eat them alive. After, he and his brother-in-law Throbb set their eyes on Shade’s migrating colony. However, he can't follow them because he can’t read the northern stars in the sky.

Goth then spots the Silverwing Shade and the Brightwing Marina, and saves the former of being eaten by an owl. After defeating and eating the prey bird, Goth introduces himself and Throbb to the protagonists, and says they want to go back to their home. Shade proposes them to go to the south with him and Marina to join Shade’s entire colony. Goth is delighted and offers his protection in return.

During a break, Shade confesses to Goth his hatred of owls because they burned his home. Goth offers to bring his army of species from the south and make Shade his commander-in-chief, which emotionally touch the young bat. The goal behind this is to eat the whole colony of Shade.

Goth obtains information about the location of Shade's colony because of Shade's ability to track it by waves. However, Marina flies back to her island because she does not like Goth and Throbb. While Shade flies back to Marina and tries to convince her to return, Goth kills and eats a bat that was passing by. Shade returns and tells Goth and Throbb that Marina has left. Goth, remembering that he had sworn to protect them, sends Throbb to find her (to eat her in fact). Goth then asks Shade to try again to find the location of the colony another time. However, he hits part of a bush where Goth's prey was hidden, revealing his wing. Shade sees this and realizes that his 2 companion are bad Samaritans. Fearing for his life and Marina, he pretends using waves is exhausting and that he needs to go to drink water. When he goes, Goth finishes to eat the dead bat.

Throbb comes back, tricked by Shade who said him that his colony has showed up and Goth waited him and Shade to celebrate with a big feast. Frustrated, Goth calls his brother-in-law an idiot, but isn’t bothered much, as he has some info on the location of the colony. Goth and Throbb eventually arrive to a shack near electrical towers. Throbb spots Goth, Marina, and an owl, the son of Brutus, the leader of the owls. Goth ambushes the three. He chooses the owl for dinner, but he got bitten in the paw. Choosing then Shade, he chases him, but is taunted by Marina, so he chooses to eat her rather. But he is again interrupted by Shade, and he chases him again for good, flying around the shack.

Reaching the electrical facilities, Shade notices that Goth has his bracelet rubbed against the fence and it is a very good conductor of electricity. The hero attires him into a trap by passing through a fence, to which Goth is too big to do so. His band touches the fence, and Goth is electrocuted. Unfortunately for the heroes, he isn’t killed off for real, as he eats a crow who came with his friend to see him, thinking it was a good corpse to eat.

Goth and Throbb find again Shade and Marina. The cannibal asks Goth where his colony is. Shade points in the opposite direction from where he was going. Goth, not believing him and not wanting to underestimate him, decides to go in Shade's direction. After a while, Goth loses his patience, takes Shade to the ground and tries to force him to reveal the location of his colony, otherwise Marina will be used as a meal for Throbb. Shade pretends that he doesn't care. Goth, surprised, prevents Throbb from swallowing Marina. He suspects that Shade intends to betray his colony in exchange for something. Shade confirms this and asks Goth to take him and Marina to the jungle and live as royal subjects with Throbb as his servant in exchange for the colony of Silverwings. Goth finally agrees.

They fly away but they still can't find the colony. Goth gets angry and threatens Shade to end their deal if he wants to cheat them again. Shade assures them that he is telling the truth. The villain orders Shade to kill a prey he meets in the forest to prove that he is as ruthless as him. Shade flies a moment, but can’t bring himself to do so. He returns and says to Goth preys are scared. Goth has anticipated this and reveals he has brought a rabbit alive. He orders Shade to kill him.

In front of his hesitation, he deduces that he lied again to gain time, and prepares to devour it, but Shade improvises by affirming that he always has the habit of starting the meal with red leaves of shrubs, which he indicates as salad. He collects some of these leaves and offers them to the two cannibals to eat. The latter take a bite and eat it. Just as Shade decides to kill the poor rabbit to play the game, Throbb and Goth feel dizzy and fall asleep. The red leaves contained a substance similar to a sleeping pill. This allows Shade and Marina to escape. When they wake up, they continue in the same direction. On the way, they smell a bat and decide to have a good meal. Following the smell, they arrive at a wooden house where they discover a colony of bright wings. They eat them all, and resumes their journey. However, they still scent bats, and notices that Shade and Marina aren’t really far. They hide in a trash depository, and ambush the heroes. A chase ensues until Shade and Marina manage to lose them by hiding under a grid. Goth tries to reach them with his wing but at the same time Throbb arrives and knocks out his brother-in-law by falling on him.

The two villains find them again when they’re chased by owls and wait until they escape with the help of Orestes, the son of Brutus, to stalk them. After a moment, they attack and chase the trio into a mine. Goth goes after Shade, but after a moment, because of the clumsiness of Throbb, a mining cart starts up and causes a rock slide that blocks Goth and Shade. This gives the perfect opportunity for Goth to eat Shade, but the latter explains Goth needs him to get out of the mine. Shade would use his size to indicate to Goth, who is larger, which rocks could be moved. In exchange for his help, the silverwing makes him promise that he will leave him, his friends and his colony alone. Goth agrees to the deal on the name of Zotz, his god, if Shade doesn't intend to trick him again.

At one point, Shade spots an opening in the ceiling that leads outside. He guides Marine and Orestes out of the mine with it, but Goth calls him back and tells him not to forget the deal they made. Shade reluctantly agrees and helps Goth to enlarge the exit. The cannibal bat immediately betrays Shade and is about to eat him. The hero reminds him of his deal made on Zotz’s name, but Goth says he answers to no one. Shade and Marina succeed nevertheless to trick Goth again by making an illusion of an angry Zotz wanting to punish Goth. Afraid, Goth submits to the illusion that asks him to recite several times that he is a naughty bat until Throbb comes to him and makes him realize the trick. Goth, vengeful as ever, makes a deal with Luger, the leader wolves. He will be master of the sky while they will be masters of the earth and Brutus will lose his place. Brutus and Luger are informed of the location of the colony by the traitorous Batsheba. Luger in turn gives the information to Goth. He and Throbb attack the owls just as they were arresting Shade, Marina, Orestes and Frida for high treason. They kill many owls and give them to wolves who eat them.

Goth then goes after Brutus to get his place. He and Throbb surround him after a battle, but the owl is saved by Shade's colony, which has chosen its side. Shade reveals himself to Goth who, enraged and determined to finish him off for good, pursues him. The chase takes place in the woods, where Goth manages to catch Shade. Just as he is about to make a snack of him, Brutus attacks Goth. The evil bat gets the better of the owl leader once again. Shade steps in and fights Goth who manages to pin him to the ice. Gloating about his next meal, he is distracted by the sun who rises. Shade, taking advantage of this, flies, chased by Goth. The Silverwing drags him through stalagmites and emits echo waves to distract the cannibal during his flight. It works and Goth flies straight into a big waterfall. He tries to take Shade with him as a last act of spite, but Shade survives the fall. Goth is never seen again after falling down.

Personality[]

He is notable for his Spanish-accent in the series (due to the fact that he and his kind live in Central America) and would often call Marina senorita and introduce himself and Throbb with "hola" the Spanish equivalent for hello when attacking them during the show's run. However, along with his Spanish charm, Goth is brutal and sadistic.

Unlike his book counterpart, he doesn't talk much about Cama Zotz as his supreme god. It's strongly implied he doesn't worship or adore her, as he swears His name on a false promise. However, when Shade fakes being the deity, Goth is absolutely scared and is ready to whatever the god wants to not be punished. Goth's most notable trait is his gluttony. He loves eat food, alive or death, and not always out of survival. He sometimes even kills for pleasure. Goth also craves power and is ready to rule the forest, making a deal with the wolves for this purpose.

Despite being the brother-in-law of Throbb, Goth is easily and often angry at the other's idiocy and doesn't hesitate to abuse him when he is frustrated.
