Roy Alphard, also known as the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Garbage, and simply Gluttony, is a major antagonist in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World.

Roy Alphard, alongside his siblings Lye Batenkaitos and Louis Arneb, was one of the three Sin Archbishops of the Witch Cult who represented the sin of gluttony. Alphard loved to consume the identities of anyone he could by using his Authority of Gluttony, which allowed him to devour the identities of his victims and use their powers and abilities for himself. He represented the "Garbage" aspect of gluttony because, unlike his siblings who had a more particular palette, Alphard preferred quantity over quality and consumed identities en masse in a vain attempt to satiate his unquenchable hunger.

Appearance[]

Roy Alphard was a young boy around the age of puberty who had brown skin and sharp shark-like teeth. He boasted a lithe athletic physique and stood at four feet and eleven inches tall. His eyes were emerald-green with yellow pupils and his dishevelled hair was dark-brown and long, reaching down to his upper abdomen. Aside from two long strands that framed his face, Alphard's hair was tied back into a braid. He wore skin-tight emerald-green pants and a matching long changshan-style robe with a yellow interior, a pianjin-style collar, and turned-in cuffs. Both his pants and his robe had tattered hems.

Personality[]

Roy, like his siblings, referred to himself using collective pronouns such as "we" instead of "I". He appeared to lack any form of remorse, as he was perfectly willing to massacre and devour fellow humans. He had a deep passion for his immoral consumption of human memories, however, no amount of food had ever been enough to fully satisfy his hunger.

Synopsis[]

Attack on the Water Gate City[]

Raid on City Hall[]

Eventually, a small band of warriors raided city hall with the goal of taking control of the broadcasting system. As fighting waged outside, a trio of resistance fighters consisting of Duchess Crusch Karsten, Subaru Natsuki, and the Spirit Knight Julius Juukulius were able to reach the roof of the building. Before they could reach Lust however, Alphard burst down a door and confronted his enemies. Natsuki, who had previously lost a loved one to the Authority of Gluttony, struck first with his whip. Alphard easily countered Natsuki's attack and began duelling Crusch Karsten, whose considerable skill was unable to match up to his own.

As Gluttony prepared to pounce on his prey and claim victory, Juukulius launched an unexpected attack and wounded the Sin Archbishop. Sensing their opportunity, Natsuki and Karsten left the Spirit Knight to fend off Alphard while they headed inside and confronted the Archbishop of Lust. Alphard continued to duel his opponent until the Witch Cult briefly opened the flood gates as retaliation for the assault, partially flooding the city in the process. Gluttony and Lust abandoned city hall, and both the Witch Cultists and their enemies who had stormed the building were able to escape the flood.

Duel at the Control Tower[]

Do you remember when we were kids? We were so frail, Brother, and one time we fell ill, we asked you for an abble from the tree in the yard, did we not?! We were still small, and you said you couldn't do it! Do you remember? I guess you don't? But the more you said no, the more we wanted an abble! Do you know why? You don't, do you? It's because of what happened next that we—that you—! We always, always thought it! We always felt it! We are different! We are nothing but baggage! And what of it?! How about not?! We feel amazing! Was this how it felt to you?! I bet it felt great! We finally understand! —You got the abble for us, Brother. That's why we hated you.
~ Roy Alphard speaking from Joshua Juukulius's perspective in regards to his envy of his brother Julius Juukulius.

Following the raid on city hall, Lust issued another warning to the people of Pristella via the broadcast system and then promptly abandoned the building in order to take up guardianship of the first district's control tower. Alphard did the same, returning to the control tower in the second district. Eventually, Julius Juukulius and another member of the Anastasia Camp named Ricardo Welkin showed up to take back the control tower as part of a larger coordinated effort to take control of the city from the Witch Cult. Alphard had been expecting that Juukulius would be the one to volunteer to confront him and was pleased that he had come.

Gluttony irritated and unnerved his opponents by making statements about them that he garnered from Joshua Juukulius's memories. In response, the Spirit Knight acted first by using "El Clauzeria," a spell that combined all six magical elements to produce a beam of rainbow light from his sword. At the same time, Welkin launched himself at the Sin Archbishop for a coordinated attack. Because of his intimate knowledge of the fighting styles of his opponents, Alphard was able to predict and dodge the immensely fast El Clauzeria and then deflect Welkin's strike. He began overwhelming Welkin with his superior fighting style.

Juukulius tried to intervene with a slash of fire and wind magic, though Gluttony effortlessly countered him and struck Welkin. Alphard noted that the feeble Joshua Juukulius would've loved to have been able to match the Spirit Knight and Welkin like he was. Julius attacked Gluttony again, and to the latter's surprise, was able to land a powerful kick. By using light and dark magic, he had simultaneously increased his own strength while diminishing Alphard's. Gluttony sent Juukulius flying with the Ultimate Palm technique and then used magic to manipulate the water in the nearby canal to use against Welkin.

Welkin dissipated the water with a powerful sonic shout, which greatly impressed Alphard. Gluttony launched a flurry of attacks at Juukulius while remarking on Joshua's perspective on him. Unsettled by Alphard's words despite not remembering his brother, Julius launched a rage-fuelled offensive. Gluttony began pretending that his defenses were being breached in order to lure Juukulius into letting his guard down. The Spirit Knight tried to finish Gluttony with an attack formed from all six elements, at which point Alphard broke the sword with Ultimate Palm, cancelled out the magic with Twilight Mage, and attacked using Twin Blade Serpent.

Welkin took the attack for Juukulius, resulting in him losing his right forearm. To make matters worse for the pair, Alphard managed to devour the Spirit Knight's name. However, despite the weakened state of his enemies, Gluttony was eventually driven away from the control tower. Alongside his brother and Capella Emerada Lugunica, Alphard managed to retreat from Pristella. Greed and Wrath on the other hand were killed and captured respectively by other resistors, and control of the city was returned to its inhabitants. Furthermore, none of the objectives that the Witch Cult had attacked the Water Gate City for were accomplished.

Skirmish in the Watchtower[]

A Taste for Death[]

Roughly two months after the attack on Pristella, Alphard became aware that a group of adventurers, Julius Juukulius and Subaru Natsuki among them, had entered the Pleiades Watchtower in search of a cure for Gluttony's power. Natsuki had accidentally entered the Corridor of Memories, which led to Arneb consuming his memories. From Natsuki's memories, Arneb discovered that he had an Authority called "Return by Death" which sent him back in time to a predetermined point everytime he died. Alphard and Batenkaitos were both excited by the prospect of devouring Natsuki themselves, as death was an experience they were unfamiliar with.

Roy Alphard's body became the vessel for Reid Astrea.

The two Archbishops began travelling to the Pleiades Watchtower as quickly as they could. Though the Auguria Dunes typically took weeks to cross, the Gluttony brothers were able to do it in less than a day by using their Authority to control the mabeasts that inhabited the sands. Hoping to enter unmolested, the brothers had the countless swarm of mabeasts charge towards the watchtower as a distraction while they secretly entered. After making their way inside the tower, the Archbishops split up in search of their prey. Roy Alphard entered the tower's third floor, wherein he discovered a pure white room with a man standing within.

The man was none other than the soul form of Reid Astrea, the legendary Hero who contributed greatly to the defeat of the Witch of Envy centuries ago. Astrea served as the trial guardian of the floor, stopping anyone from progressing further upwards without defeating him in a contest. Alphard used his Authority to consume Astrea's soul, though doing so proved to be a costly mistake. Astrea's soul was so indomitable that he was able to take complete control of Roy Alphard's body. Essentially, Gluttony had unwittingly helped Astrea attain a new flesh body, allowing the Hero to abandon his post as trial guardian for the first time.

Puppet of the Hero[]

Reid Astrea, in Alphard's body, attacking Julius Juukulius.

Astrea decided that his first course of action would be to acquire food, drink, and women to sleep with. For the latter, he decided to seek out Emilia, a candidate to rule Lugunica and companion of Natsuki's, and Shaula, the guardian of the Watchtower, both of whom were currently in the tower. He took the stairs down to the first floor, where he found a cage made from Emilia's ice magic. Continuing on, Astrea came across Subaru Natsuki in a room with writing on the walls. Natsuki was in a sorry state and had a dislocated shoulder, which led the Hero to deduce that he had been trapped inside the ice cage after a falling out with Emilia.

Astrea realigned Natsuki's shoulder for him but declined to reveal how he had escape the third floor. He sensed Juukulius's presence, whom he had previously fought when he was still a trial guardian, and decided to seek him out. With Natsuki in tow, Astrea headed to the great spiral staircase that led to the bottom of the Watchtower. Juukulius was fighting a group of flame-projecting centaur-like mabeasts that had managed to breach the building's ground level. Seeking a rematch against the knight, Astrea leapt into the fray and began effortlessly slaying the mabeasts while simultaneously attacking Juukulius.

Coming of the Witch[]

Astrea continued to fight against Juukulius and the mabeasts until the tower was decimated and Subaru Natsuki was killed by the arrival of the Witch of Envy herself. Envy was the one who had bestowed the Return by Death Authority on Natsuki, and she was fiercely jealous of anyone who learned the secret of the power. Because Gluttony was aware of Return by Death, she had attacked the Watchtower with the intent to kill everyone within. With Natsuki's death, time returned to a point not long before Alphard confronted Astrea. Just like the previous time loop, Gluttony tried to eat Astrea but was possessed instead.

Astrea once again headed down to the first floor, where he eventually encountered Juukulius, Emilia, and Natsuki facing off against Batenkaitos. Batenkaitos was surprised to see Astrea outside of the third floor and was unable to deduce that the man he was dealing with was his brother. Alphard's brother attacked the Hero, though he was swiftly overwhelmed and dealt with. Astrea then asked Emilia for a drink. His request was denied, which led to him fighting both Emilia and Juukulius. Batenkaitos soon re-entered the fray, leading to a three-sided battle. As the warriors fought, the Witch of Envy manifested and once again killed Natsuki.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Authority of Gluttony: As one of the Witch Cult's three Sin Archbishops of Gluttony, Alphard shared the power called the "Authority of Gluttony" with his siblings Lye Batenkaitos and Louis Arneb. The siblings gained the Authority at some point in the past when they absorbed the Gluttony Witch Factor. Befitting of the corresponding sin it represented, the Authority of Gluttony wielded by Alphard and his siblings was a power based around eating.
    • Memory Absorption: The most infamous power of the Authority of Gluttony was its ability to consume the memories and names of others. Those who had their memories erased would forget everything about themselves, with the exception of basic information such as muscle memory. On the other hand, those who had their name erased would still retain their own memories but would be forgotten by everyone else in the world. If a person had both their memories and name eaten, then they would be forgotten by everyone and would also fall into a permanent coma in which they never aged. The only people that remembered those who were forgotten were the Archbishops of Gluttony themselves and, strangely, Subaru Natsuki. In order to steal a person's name or memories, Alphard had to touch a person with his left hand and then chant their name while licking said hand. However, the name chanted had to be the target's true name as otherwise Alphard would grow nauseous and be temporarily weakened upon trying to consume them.
    • Monster Control: A secondary ability of the Authority of Gluttony was its power to control mabeasts, dangerous creatures created artificially centuries ago by the Witch of Gluttony Daphne. Mabeasts were hostile and predatory by nature, sustaining themselves by feeding off of the mana of living creatures. As the holders of Daphne's Witch Factor, Alphard and his siblings inherited her ability to control the actions of her creations. The only mabeasts that were known to be resistant to the control of Gluttony were the Great Rabbit and the Black Serpent, two of the Three Great Mabeasts. The siblings often used mabeasts when necessary to assist them in their endeavours.
  • Energy Absorption: All living beings were born with a gate, a metaphysical apparatus within a person's body that autonomously absorbed the ambient magical energy that existed in the atmosphere and stored it in the individual's od (soul). So long as they were trained to do so, a person could then use their stored magical energy to perform superhuman feats. Thanks to Lunar Eclipse, Roy Alphard had a versatile stockpile of mana manipulation techniques in his arsenal.
    • Magic: A prominent use for mana was magic, a practice that consisted of expelling mana out of one's own gate and manipulating it to create specific supernatural phenomena.
      • Water Manipulation
    • Physical Augmentation: A popular mana manipulation technique among noteworthy warriors was "Mana Flow," which consisted of an individual enhancing their physical capabilities by channelling their magical energy throughout their body. With Mana Flow, Gluttony possessed a superhuman physical prowess that belied his size and allowed him to overwhelm great warriors.

Abilities[]

  • Master Combatant: Thanks to Lunar Eclipse, Roy Alphard had a stockpile of martial arts techniques taken from the memories of various powerful warriors. One of Alphard's martial art techniques was "Ultimate Palm," which had been used to kill at least eighty-eight handsome men by its original wielder. Ultimate Palm consisted of the user stepping forward and twisting their hips to launch a devastating palm strike capable of shattering bone and steel. Another skill of his, named "Twin Blade Serpent," consisted of Alphard unleashing a flurry of strikes with his twins blades at incredible speed.

Equipment[]

  • Witch Cult Gospel: As a member of the Witch Cult, Roy was the owner of a copy of the Witch Cult Gospel. Each Witch Cult Gospel was a replica of the Tome of Wisdom, a book that had been in the possession of the Witch of Greed Echidna. The Tome of Wisdom would provide exact details of future events concerning the Witch of Greed, essentially bestowing Echidna with a form of precognition. Unlike the original Tome of Wisdom, the Gospels of the Witch Cult were imperfect replicas, meaning that, although they detailed the future of its owner, the events conveyed were subject to change and the information provided was often up for interpretation. The Gospels took the form of small black books that could only be read by their owners. Like every Witch Cultist, Alphard followed the details provided in his Gospel unquestionably.

Trivia[]

  • Like the other Sin Archbishops (with the exception of Stride Volakia), Roy received his namesake from a celestial body. Alphard is the name of the brightest star in the Hydra constellation. The star was also known as "the backbone of the Serpent" to the Arabs.
  • The star names of the Gluttony siblings were each linked to the Three Great Mabeasts created by the Witch of Gluttony Daphne four hundred years ago. Roy (hydra) represented the Black Serpent, Louis (hare) represented the Great Rabbit, and Lye (sea monster) represented the White Whale.
