Roland Kantos is the main antagonist of the Highlander: The Series episode "Prophecy".
He was portrayed by Gerard Plunkett, who also played Donovan Jamison in Smallville.
Biography[]
In his former life, Roland Kantos was accused of witchcraft and executed at the stake but was revived. Kantos became an Immortal and became a student of Cassandra. She taught him the same ability she had, to compel people to do their will with their voice. Kantos studied under her for a thousand years, but when he realized he had learned everything she could teach him, he tried to kill her.
He failed but remained at large and became aware of a prophecy that a Highland child, born on the winter solstice, would pass through darkness to light and challenge the voice of death. Realizing it concerned a rival, Kantos traveled to Scotland in the early 17th century, searching for a future Immortal. He came to the MacLeod village and met Duncan's foster parents, Ian and Mary. He claimed that thirteen years earlier his baby son had been stolen by bandits who killed his wife and may have been left as a foundling.
Cassandra had already taken Duncan into the woods and Mary, when compelled by Kantos, truthfully but evasively told him the one he sought was not there. 390 years later, Kantos realized Cassandra was searching for Duncan. He confronted her private detective, Andrew Beckman, and controlled him, getting information on Duncan's location. He then killed Beckman, before mind-controlling his partner into committing suicide so he wouldn’t be blamed for the murder.
He then traveled to Seacouver and found Duncan and Cassandra, where Kantons challenged Duncan on a cliff top. He used his powers to weaken Duncan and nearly killed him but Duncan fell off the cliff and was taken to safety by Cassandra. Kantos followed the pair to MacLeod's dojo but they fled onto holy ground. Kantos took control of two police officers and sent them after Duncan. They captured him and took him to a warehouse where Kantos was waiting.
After wiping the two police officers' memories, Kantos kept Duncan handcuffed while he went to recover his strength after the use of his powers. While he was away, Duncan had the idea of plugging his ears with candle wax so he couldn't hear Kantos' voice. When Kantos returned, he tried to use his powers to defeat Duncan but he was able to use his advantage to kill Kantos and beheaded him, taking his Quickening.
