I am the son of Aku's magic. He has looked deep within you and has spawned me from your own burning hatred. I am your dark side, and I possess all the powers that you wield. And I have only one purpose in my existence: to destroy you!
~ Mad Jack
That's fortune cookie nonsense!
~ Mad Jack's most popular catchphrase
EARN?! After everything we've done!? Everything we've been through?! The death... The loss... The suffering... WHO ARE YOU TO DENY US WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY OURS?!
~ Mad Jack, furious of the answer given to him and Jack by the Monk.

Mad Jack is a major antagonist in the Samurai Jack series.

He is a mystic clone of Samurai Jack created by Aku to defeat the samurai by using his own skills against him. He has all the abilities of Jack, but none of the compassion or restraint. 50 years later, Mad Jack becomes Inner Jack, a figment of Jack's mind who attempts to coerce him into giving in to his darker emotions.

Like Jack, he was voiced by Phil LaMarr.

Appearance[]

He is Jack's exact replica, except that his gi is black and red and his eyes are red with shadows under them.

After 50 years, he appears as a spirit in Jack's mind and takes form in a more demonic and distorted version of Jack.

Personality[]

Mad Jack is shown to be very rude, violent, destructive, impatient, wrathful and rather psychotic. In essence, he is the physical embodiment of all of Jack's rage and hatred.

Biography[]

"Jack Versus Mad Jack"[]

Having to fight several bounty hunters throughout a small city and forest, Jack became infuriated, because no one left him alone and he was tired of fighting. As he fought, Aku also grew tired of relying on pathetic bounty hunters to vanquish the samurai. Realizing that no-one else can truly match his unbeatable fighting technique, he gets an idea. After Jack finished off the last hunter, he tried to calm down, but then one of his sandal straps broke, causing him to lose his temper and angrily throw it at one of his wanted posters. The poster then started to light up and energy came from it that formed into dark duplicate of Jack, surprising him. Jack questions who the imposter is, and the duplicate, known as Mad Jack, explains that he was created by Aku from Jack's own inner darkness for sole purpose of destroying the original Jack.

Mad Jack strikes furiously at Jack, taking delight when he manages to hurt him. Jack then goes on the offensive, and Mad Jack smiles evilly as he deflects his strikes until his hair gets cut, making him madder. The two fighters trade blow for blow, but neither one could best the other. Jack's hair gets cut as well, and he becomes enraged as well as result. The clashes from their swords end up creating sparks that set the forest on fire, though they both pay no mind and continue their fierce duel. After making a clash that literally blows away the nearby trees, Jack sees his own angry reflection in his sword which resembled his doppelganger's expression, and realized that fighting fire with fire wasn't going to win the fight. Instead, he pushes back Mad Jack to a distance so that he can sheath his sword and fix his hair. He then calms himself and finds inner peace, and at the same time, the fire also disappears.

Confused by all this, Mad Jack demands an explanation. Jack states that the fight was over; since Mad Jack was formed from Jack's anger, and by cleansing himself of all negative feelings, Mad Jack would cease to exist. Mad Jack refuses to believe this and attempts to prove himself real by finishing off Jack for good. But as he closes in for the kill, the now zenned Jack absorbs his evil twin into himself, thus defeating him.

"Shadow of Aku"[]

Aku brought Mad Jack back to life to attack Jack at Aku City using three devices, but by destroying these devices, Jack was once again able to best his dark self.

Season 5[]

50 years after having been defeated and sealed away by Jack in his mind, Mad Jack returns. As shown in a flashback in Season 5 Episode XCVIII, after Aku destroyed the last time portal, Mad Jack managed to take control over Jack (though he is not visibly shown), causing him to lose control over his own frustration and anger, which would eventually cause him to lose his sword into the same pit that the destroyed time portal was in.

Afterwards, Mad Jack turns into Inner Jack, who continues to torment Jack mentally, continuously urging him into the wrong path. One time, when he was chased by the Daughters of Aku, Inner Jack appears (as Anguish) and insists that Jack commit seppuku because his quest is now pointless since he lost his sword and was no longer able to return back in time. Another time is when Jack is recovering from a flesh wound in a cave, Inner Jack (as Bloodlust) returns and is mocking him over the fact that he had just killed a human being for the first time. Inner Jack appears again (as Apathy) when Jack and Ashi were swallowed by a giant monster, trying to tell him that she chose her way, and now she has to live with the consequences. He even tries to convince him to abandon Ashi for dead to save himself. Although, he gets annoyed that Jack manages to save Ashi’s life again.

Inner Jack reappears another in the episode during Jack's meditation near the crater of the time-portal 50 years later. He appears in an even more twisted form, behaving even more malevolent than before. When Jack failed to create the perfect tea in order to gain the answers needed, Mad Jack lashes out against the Monk and attempts to slap the answers out of him, but is stopped by Jack, who confronts his inner demon, realizing that Inner Jack's overwhelming anger was why the sword was lost in the first place and is the reason he lost his hope. Jack managed to eventually see through his rage after having been sent flying by a slap from Inner Jack and permanently dispels him for good. Having done this, Jack would eventually be reunited with his sword and regain his original appearance, finally freed from Inner Jack's influence.

Quotes[]

Season 1 and Video Games[]

Jack: "What sorcery is this? Who are you?"
Mad Jack: "Don't be such a fool! I'm you!"
Jack: "If you are me, then who am I?"
Mad Jack: [growls] "You're so stupid! You are you also!"
Jack: "Enough! You are my mirror image, yet your speech is foul with evil and disrespect! Who are you and how have you come to be me!?"
Mad Jack: "I am the son of Aku's magic. He has looked deep within you and has spawned me from your own burning hatred. I am your dark side, and I possess all the powers that you wield. And I have only one purpose in my existence: to
destroy you!"
~ Jack and Mad Jack's first conversation.
Mad Jack: "Hurts, doesn't it?"
Jack: "Not as much as this is going to hurt you!"
~ Mad Jack and Jack as the former hurts the latter.
Huh? What the?
~ Mad Jack as Jack stops fighting.
Mad Jack: "What the heck is going on!?"
Jack: "You have lost. The battle is over."
Mad Jack: "WHAT!?"
Jack: "You are my inner demon. You have been born from the hatred within me. But now, that hatred is no more. Thus, you do not exist."
Mad Jack: "FOOL! I am real! Now feel the reality of my cold, hard steel!
~ Mad Jack final words before Jack absorbs him."
Jack: "I know you!"
Mad Jack: "That's right! It's me again! You other self, your
angry self! The one you keep locked away inside you! Aku has given me life once more! Don't think you can defeat me so easily this time!"
~ Jack and Mad Jack in Shadow of Aku.

Season 5[]

Anguish: "It's time to end it, don't you think?"
Jack: "Never. They are just machines. I'll find a way. I always have."
Anguish: "When you have the sword, but now it's gone. There's no hope!"
Jack: "I've been doing fine without it."
Anguish: "Well, listen to you. And what are you going to do when Aku finds you and realizes you have no sword?"
Jack: "Aku doesn't know, and he hasn't shown himself in years. He keeps thinking that one of his machines can defeat me."
Anguish: "Maybe he's right. You haven't faced anything so powerful. How much longer can you keep this up?"
Jack: "It always seems bad at first, but then I find a way. They're just nuts and bolts. Just nuts and bolts..."
Anguish: "Who cares anymore!? There's no way home! There's nothing to fight for! There's no more honor. Come to think of it, the only honorable thing to do is-"
Jack: "Quiet!"
Anguish: "NO! I WON'T SPEND ETERNITY IN THIS FORSAKEN TIME!"
Jack: "What do you want from me?"
Anguish: "I want it to end. Aren't you tired? Wouldn't it be great to be free of all of this? Our ancestors are waiting for us. They want you to join them."
Jack: [Sees the Omen and a temple behind it.] "There."
Anguish: "You'll never make it! They'll get you!"
Jack: "I'll make it."
~ Jack and Inner Jack (Anguish) talking as they hide from the Daughters of Aku.
Bloodlust: Look at you. You've survived worse. This isn't about your pathetic little cut. It's about that girl you killed. We've never killed a human before, have we? Sure, mountains of robot corpses. But this? This was the first human being. Real flesh and blood. What happens when the others find you? You'll have to kill them, too. Can you? Will you be able to when the time comes? Maybe they will kill you... Or is that what you want!?
Jack: No..!
~ Inner Jack (Bloodlust) taunting Jack on his guilt of killing a human being.
Puff: "Jack? What are we doing, Jack?"
Jack: "Waiting."
Puff: "Waiting for what? You know the way out. Let's just go."
Jack: "No. She's another innocent."
Puff: "Innocent? Are you mad? She's pure evil."
Jack: "She's lost her way."
Puff: "Ha! You'd know about that, wouldn't you?"
Jack: "I don't want to talk to you anymore." [blows away puff]
Apathy: "Well then, maybe you'll talk to me."
Jack: "Leave me alone. I don't want to talk to you, either. (...) I don't know why you keep bringing this up."
[Creature sneaks up on Ashi and takes her]
Apathy: "Look, why do you always have to get involved? She chose her way, and now she has to live with the consequences."
Jack: "You'll never understand that it's all my fault! She's here because of me!"
Apathy: "She's gone."
Jack: "What? [looks around and sees creature climbing up]
Apathy: "Well, that's that. Lets get out of here."
Jack: "No." [takes a spiked flower to use as a weapon.]
Apathy: "Ugh, you're going to save her life again, aren't you?"
Jack: "Yes."
~ Jack, Inner Jack (Apathy) and a talking puffball discussing what to do about Ashi.
Monk: "This is terrible."
Jack: "Really?"
Monk: "Yes. Yes, quite terrible. This tea has all the necessary ingredients... but it lacks the most important one... balance. I see why your path to the sword remains clouded."
Jack: "This isn't the path? I don't understand. Then you must show me the way!"
Monk: "I cannot. It is not for me to show you your path."
Inner Jack: "That's fortune cookie nonsense! He knows where it is. He just won't tell you."
Jack: "Please, you must tell me."
Monk: "That is something you must earn."
Inner Jack: "EARN!? After everything we've done, everything we've been
through!? The death... The loss... The suffering! WHO ARE YOU TO DENY US WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY OURS!?"
(Inner Jack prepares to slap the monk, but Jack stops him)
Jack: "Enough. We have lost the sword because of you."
Mad Jack: "I have kept us alive! He's the one who has taken it from us! He knows where it is!"
Jack: "No. I've let you consume me for far too long."
Mad Jack: "You're in my way!" (Mad Jack slaps Jack into a shōji)
Jack: "You. You are the one who has kept the past hidden. Your anger, your frustration."
Mad Jack: "YOU'RE A FOOL!"
Jack: "You have blinded us, but now I can see." (Jack disperses Inner Jack)
Mad Jack: "YOU NEED ME!!" (Mad Jack disappears)
Monk: "Now you are balanced."
~ Jack facing Inner Jack, and finally conquering his anger.
Care: "Be careful"
Jack: "I know. This... has never happened before."
Care: "What are you going to do?"
Jack: "I don't know."
~ Jack and Inner Jack's final conversation.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike Mad Jack, Anguish and Bloodlust, Apathy is much calmer than them.
  • Ironically, his ultimate demise in Season 5 heavily involves the real Jack's own frustration towards him.
